What are the best vertical shoot 'em ups in 4:3 aspect ratio?
Here are a few that come to mind:
- Raystorm / Raycrisis
- Sokyugurentai
- Radiant Silvergun
- Giga Wing 1+2
- Mars Matrix
- Under Defeat
- the Neo Geo shoot 'em ups
What else is out there?

For dre1,
The STG terminology that you're referring to a certain group of STGs that utilize the horizontal screen orientation but displays the screen in a vertical format would be none other than a "verizontal" type of STG.
A couple of other verizontal-based STG titles would include Takumi's "Night Raid" running on the Taito G-Net arcade motherboard/PSX console port setup and the multi-console/Steam port release of "Shinorubi" also.
The Sega Naomi/Dreamcast port of "Zero Gunner II" from Psikyo is a verizontal STG indeed.
----------
The vaguely worded Neo-Geo STGs with a verizontal format would include the following:
Video System Co.'s Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings 2 and Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings 3
Ghost Pilot
Sarus' Shock Troopers and Shock Troopers 2
Psikyo's Strikers 1945 Plus as a dedicated Neo-Geo MVS game kit release
ADK's Twinkle Star Sprites STG on the Neo-Geo MVS arcade hardware
NGDev's "Fast Striker" STG released as a dedicated Neo-Geo MVS game kit & AES game release + released as a dedicated Sega Dreamcast GD-Rom game disc also + was released on the Nintendo Switch gaming platform under the new game title of "Fast Striker EX"
Fellow shmupper Gryzor's "Neo XYX" STG as a Neo-Geo MVS game kit release + on Steam
and a few others as well

Re: Best Vertical 4:3 Shmups?
Under Defeat is not a vertizontal game unless you're talking about the remixed mode found in later releases, and that is 16:9 aspect ratio.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
