The wonderful stage 2 from Sin & Punishment 2 is almost entirely set underwater. Rail shooter though.

Odd thread bump I know, but I was thinking of games with submarine enemies kinda like in the hunt, and I have this recollection of somewhat recently playing a game where you fly a ship, but there's a water section and sub enemies that you can drop bombs onto, and I coulda swore it was by NMK but looking through their games I can't find it. like if p47 aces and in the hunt had a baby.

Am I dreaming?

A long shot, but maybe P47: The Phantom Fighter? NMK's og WW2 hori; I often see it credited to publisher Jaleco. (got a PCE port as "P47 The Freedom Fighter")

There's also its spiritual sequel, USAAF Mustang, which was published by UPL. (on MD as "Fire Mustang")
Air To Sea Combat!

Both kinda light on submarines though, now I think back!

nah, I do enjoy p47 altho not as much as p47 aces, I feel like it's something I must be dreaming, but I thought I remembered having a plane dropping bombs into the water, and the subs shooting missiles up into the air which is why you wanted to drop the bombs to knock em out right away even though you were also shooting at planes above the water. they might have been separate button shots too

I'd love to know what it might be too. I was almost gonna suggest Area 88, but I've never seen the arcade original, and the SFC submarine stage's level design isn't quite as good as you describe. (memorably terrifying jumping sub though!)

Seriously good game, that. The vehicle hijacking mechanics are finessed, visceral! Eat this sub in your face, enemy SCUBA dude! OFFICIARU Professional Review

One of the great James Bond-A-Thon STGs along with Battle Formula.

Another long shot, but I'm having trouble figuring out this one's developer and year of release, so I thought I'd chuck it in here.

Lock On. Surprised I'd never seen it before, as a connoisseur of gunmetal horis involving air-to-sea combat. Other than Capcom and NMK's examples, I don't know of many for arcades. :o Looks like they could only afford half a plane for the attract intro. Not offensive-lookin' otherwise though.

Ultra-generic name doesn't help! Shares its title, minus a hyphen, with Tatsumi's DECO-published 1986 game. Which is more of an action/sim precursor to SEGA's G-LOC.

EDIT: Philko, huh. Rings a bell, ala Dooyong and Afega. Thanks comment dude, chucked you a sub.

Is that an innuendo in your pseudonym, Sandy? Also Pensilvania Image

EDIT: Oh I see, they are indeed one of them there South Korean devs, like Dooyong and Afega. Also, they did TURTLE SHIP, which... well, does have a fever dream quality. :o Flying submarine, or some shit.

EDIT2: Yo WTF, that Turtle Ship water stage BGM is a jam! Seriously. Givin' me Allman Brothers / Bob Seger vibes, not unlike Gun Frontier!

Taito's Battle Shark upright cab circa 1989 -- 1st person shooter viewpoint takes place entirely underwater with your trusty futuristic armored submarine vessel. You actually look/play the entire game through an actual periscope viewer setup for extra realism/greater visual impact. And if you get hit, the periscope viewer rumbles and shakes for that extra tactical feedback/immersion feedback -- yes, Taito went the "extra mile" with incorporating such rumble vibrational effects indeed, arcade cab-wise.

Japanese arcade flyer for Battle Shark: https://flyers.arcade-museum.com/videogames/show/105

American arcade flyer for Battle Shark: https://flyers.arcade-museum.com/videogames/show/3196

Notice the differences between both the JPN & USA cabs of Battle Shark -- the USA cab has a front-mounted marquee with a red light with a wire cage attached to it that lights up during actual gameplay! Not to mention that the JPN Battle Shark cab sports a 25" arcade CRT monitor whereas with the USA Battle Shark cab, it has a 20" arcade CRT monitor installed instead + the periscope apparatus for each country region's cab setup is different in terms of shape and overall appearance as with the outer upper-mounted arcade marquees as well.

this looks really damn cool. even though I played it a buttload, I must've just been dreaming of a bizarro in the hunt, but "lock on" checks all the boxes
