You can turn the blur filter off. There's a "smoothing" setting in the screen settings menu.

Upon booting up DDP-RR demo for the very first time, from within the "in-game" sub menu of Screen setting, you'll see the Smoothing option has been been applied automatically on default setting. By turning it off and saving such screen settings upon exiting it, the CPU will remember to apply the last set of screen settings that the end-user chose previously before. This "Smoothing" filter applies to the Steam port of DDP-DFK & DDP-DFK BL stgs as well.

I wonder how much overlap with whoever is responsible for developing the exA versions of Cave's games with their various adjustments, arranges, soundtracks, etc.

I guess philosophically, I'm supportive of the idea of actually releasing this stuff in a format more easily accessible to audiences. As opposed to the trend toward all of these exA exclusive remasters with arrange modes and other features locked to arcades. So, if I want to see more official arrange-like releases on home platforms, I suppose showing it by supporting a release like this kind of makes sense. And I do like DOJ a lot. But eh, I haven't even paid attention to the demo or bothered to download it, wake me up when the game gets here I guess. Didn't expect to feel that sort of malaise but here we are.

To be fair, the new arranged mode (whatever it is) could very well be quite cool. Again, they didn't share any of that: new stages, a new character (guessing it's who we see in the promo art with the wings, unless she's the boss of the new stage), and 'other new elements'.

Worth a full new purchase? Worth the painful-to-look-at art? Who knows. I'm disappointed in this, but still holding out hope for the final product to be good. Perhaps that's folly. Fanboy folly.

The thing with Exarcadia releases is that they're all published by Exarcadia. The Cave-licensed games are even entirely developed by them, so no overlap.

I mean, the core game here seems fine. I don't see the need to be this negative yet just because the demo has a couple bugs that seem pretty fixable by the time the game comes out. If the actual game releases with big issues then we can get back to panicking about it being over.

And yeah, the exA versions had all their new stuff done in-house at exA. There's no overlap between the staff on those releases and this.

I would have agreed with you a couple of years ago, but lately I've seen stuff not get patched at all, or incompletely patched once and left to rot, that I don't even trust M2 to put out patches anymore. I'd be more willing to bet money on only the most basic fixes going in before it launches, based on personal experience.

Like everyone here. I am disappointed in the demo. I took this game off my wishlist. For DFK, I mostly play the ketsui arrangement. If they add a new stage to that mode I will probably reconsider.

The graphics here are really interesting. Due to the quality of the screenshot and all of the enemies, it's really hard to tell if these are new renders or just the original pixel art recycled. The contrast between the enemies and the level background is very strange. Does anyone know if CAVE still has their 3d employees?

Cave's main money comes from Success Plus, which is primarily concerned with the Amusement Machine business, specifically Pachinko and Pachi-Slots. They do have a video production team, but those are not internal "Cave" employees, so much as contractors that work for Success Plus.

In all of that, we need to get over the notion that the legendary staff who built their shmup catalogue is still there in any capacity. It's been over a decade. There's no art and design team just sitting there waiting to be told to start Deathsmiles 3. In that, this new release can only be a hack-job of pre-existing assets done by a tiny team that is likely not as experienced.
