RQ: Star Soldier laser

I recently started playing Star Solider again on the cube. I remember when I was playing it a few years ago I accently triggered some sort of laser power up on the first stage, but I can't remember how.

how do you trigger the laser powerup? Can it be done anywhere other than stage 1?

I haven't played in awhile, but I think you just hafta shoot a certain spot to uncover the laser item...I only ever found the item in the first stage, but I haven't played it extensively.

theres one in stage 1 and 4 IIRC
