The opposite, to my knowledge being in the top 20 for more than 3 months in a row without being a Bemani/KOF is almost impossible, it's nice to see that a shmup had a lasting success. I happen to understand that most titles have a boom during their early release and then they quickly go off the top 20 (=only the top scorers play them).

a bit surprising (the arcadia thing) but it IS raiden after all.

If they have one of those notecards that you fill out, suggest that the game be more like Raiden Fighters if it isn't that much changed from 3

Pssh, I would tell them that gamers want home ports of the RF series; this is loooong over due, and, IMO, if they were going to do another game in the RF series, they probably would've done it by now.

I'd expcet this to be kind of like a DX version of Raiden III, but we'll know soon enough.

I just got Raiden III on the weekend and i really love it.

Ok, im just a beginner regarding all these new shooters and i have
Ibara and it looks great but im too intimidated to try it out :D

I am an old Raiden fan, and 3 just brought back alot of cool
old Raiden memories ;)

So im looking forward to Raiden IV, even tho all the knowledgable
posters on this site are saying it might be a stinker

There's a bunch of gobbledygook about Items and the A (shot) button that won't make sense feeding it into Amikai.

Shakycams of Raiden 4 (thanks 2ch)

So the colgate gun DOES return!

Files that should appear in half an hour:

kishiou0017.mpg - 419k
uploadertv1952.mpg - 4.2m
giko25_1809.mpg 24.7m
giko25_1810.mpg 14.8m

Video impressions:

-I imagine the game wants to kick your ass from the second stage on. YES!
-Easy/Normal/Hard difficulty selectable
-Purple weapons!!!!
--1P gets classic Colgate Gun
--2P gets a 3-way aimed "Riemann Laser" (as 2ch jokers put it)
-Same scoring system?
-Ship slightly faster
-Music seems more "epic" and mellow
-Letting go of Shot siphons items to your position
so long and tanks for all the spacefish

On a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being shit, 10 being the shit, and 5 being Raiden III, I give Raiden IV a solid "Raiden III+". Scoring system is the same, the background graphics are a lot better, and the only addition is a shitty new weapon.

On the questionnaire, the questions were about if the new weapon and short movie clip when the first boss dies were cool. Yea, that one cinema and that one weapon seem to be all Moss worked on since the last game.

It was funny though, I got there some time after noon and players had already figured out secret score points and holes in boss patterns (one being resting on top of the first boss).

Boring. My suggestion on the questionairre was for Moss to give up.

Had a lot of fun playing Ketsui though and watched some guy seizure his way through Batrider. When he lost a life unintentionally he'd nearly rip the stick out of the cabinet in a rage and would often move his whole body when dodging tough patterns. Thank god he beat it, I thought he might kill himself if he didn't (F+ Advance clear btw).

thanks for the clips. stage 1 looks very much like raiden III but stage 2 looks really cool with lots of bullet dodging. I liked III but this one looks a lot better. looking forward to a console port.

It looks significantly harder, ship -looks- like it moves quicker, but with it being shakycam footage, who can say? Hope the PS2 is up to the task, because if not the only other likely system for a port is ... PS3.

And we don't want that.

There's the PC, which is seemingly the fate of the later Type X ports.

Code: Select all

* There is a projection of the shape of an up small almost pyramid of the character of L of "L01" currently drawn on the 50000-point bonus ground. (If the ground enemy is destroyed near this, wreckage hangs and does not appear) If this is fired in a hurry after boss destruction (after a movie), it will become large with MUKUMUKU, and if it is fired further and destroys, it will become a 50000-point bonus. (It did not become large although there was no judgment before boss destruction, and it fired, since like.)
So I guess the gold pyramid bonus is back (in stage 1), though it's after a boss death and you have to quickly find it? :?

And it's only worth 50k?

There's a 30k point bonus in stage 2 -- but amikai isn't telling coherent shit about it.

As one of rejects who enjoyed Raiden III including its soundtrack I'm looking forward to this. Sure, seems like a complete more-of-the-same cash in, but I'm still happy to get more. I figure one rerun is about enough though. Now don't laugh, but what I could hear of the tunes sounded right up my alley again. Your trash is my treasure. Bring it on.

I hear ya

After a month of reading posts on this board and figuring out
which games are the best shooters to get, i seriously believe
that some people here just go with what the experts think and
if they say its great, then it must be.

Raiden III got panned by nearly everyone on this board and
the only reason why i got it was becuase i am a Raiden fan
and i bought my PS2 specifially so i could play some Raiden.

Guess what, I loved the game, and the music is great to.

So i must not be an expert, thats cool

I also tried Ibara today and you have got to be kidding me
that Shooter is so over the top its not funny.

Its a cool game, but you cant see crap all and its confusing
as anything to see whats happening.

I figured that if you choose the TATE mode then it looks
much better and much more playable, but i can be bothered
with that.

Why cant Ports of shooter games have a mode that takes up
the whole screen?

Anyway, Raiden III was a great game. Cant wait for Raiden IV.

I still haven't gotten to play Raiden III but i've watched a bevy of videos and well... all i can say is that i'm extremley happy that they didn't abandon the Raiden style after all this time. Wether the game sucks for me or not, it will still be Raiden - and that is what counts most.

I can't wait to see some high quality videos of IV! The music, from what i can hear, sounds great and i'm glad to see that they've kept alot of the series' mainstays like the statistics screen style and diamond wall that appears between levels 8) - not to mention that awesome piercing explosion sound.

Graphics looks better (background graphics yeah, not too much on the ships design).

Our favorite pupple weapon of death is back.

That short clip of the stage one boss is nice (which they could do it for all bosses). Is the hardware people playing on a test version or the final version (I mean they were playing a test version of Raiden IV or playing the final version of Raiden IV)?

Music is in the same stlye as in Raiden III, so it's meh.

Game looks a lot harder.

Now, if they were able to pull off a good PS2 port of Raiden III, then I would believe they will pull off a good PS2 port of Raiden IV as well.

Didn't seem that hard to me, or at least not much different than the other Raidens. Since everyone there was going at it for the first time of course lives were lost in the first stage, but everyone seemed to be able to get to the stage two boss after a try or two, others that tried four or five times were reaching the third stage with lives in stock.

I also never understood why people like the toothpaste laser so much. I always found it pretty cumbersome. The banner above the cabinet said something that I took to mean "harness the power of the purple lightning". Man, if all you guys have is that dumbass laser we saw over 10 years ago, you better take this one back to the drawing board.

Edit: Forgot to mention I saw one guy go through it using both ships at the same time. So yea, not that hard.

Well, after watching the videos, I am VERY impressed! It looks like Seibu have gotten more out of Type-X, graphically speaking, then anyone else! Even the first level seemed to be a lot more detailed then Raiden III, from the ground to those power plants the ship was flying over.

Congrats to Seibu for this achievement, and for keeping the traditional shooter alive! :D

He's talking about the little video clip played in-game of the boss exploding after you beat it.

I think it's "popular" (for lack of a better term) not even because people actually use/like it, but just because of how much it tends to stand out compared to just about everything else in the game...when you think Raiden you think muted colors, gritty details, a very "basic" overall presentation...and then out of nowhere comes this big wiggly bright purple thing. It's become more or less an icon of the series, even if people never actually use it.

Ok, my apologies BBH for getting so up in arms and for not reading what you were referring to. Still, I think that that clip is was pretty well done, and, while not necessary, still ads something more to Raiden IV.

I hope that we see more console Type-X ports; I don't suppose that Raiden IV, if it were ever released for PC's, would even work on a US PC. Although I do have XP; dunno if that would matter.

Very true. I assume the new weapon that someone referred to is the 3-way laser.

Stage 3 definitely looks more challenging than Raiden 3 at that point.
It's quite nice how the ship moves a bit faster. Raiden 3 must have had the slowest incarnation to date and change is always welcome with this series.

Hopefully people gave Moss some feedback to make a new RF style game in the future, that's something it seems everyone would like a refresher on, myself included.

It's so out of place and comical you can't help but love it.

It's also great for new areas where you're not as familiar with things yet.
