broken characters/ships in a vertical shooter?
ITT, we talk about characters/ships that are so broken and great in a vertical shooter, that it's nearly pointless to use others.
I say the first guy on the top in Shikigami no Shiro 2. His shiki shot is just too great (autoaims, decent damage), and you could completely focus yourself in only dodging/scraping the enemy bullets to score whole day long, holding down the shot button. I don't even see any disadvantages that he has.

Well, his Shiki attack has the weakness that pretty much any "homing" weapon does, namely that it doesn't always go after the thing you want it to go after (this is less of a problem in Shiki 2 than it is in the original, at least to me it'd seem that way). Also, his power is decent but not great, meaning he can't take out certain things before they become a threat as well as others. He is definitely a strong (and popular) character, but not quite "broken," I'd say...in any event, Shiki II isn't really about comparing one character to another, it encourages you to try playing with everyone, despite each one's weaknesses.infested_ysy wrote:I say the first guy on the top in Shikigami no Shiro 2...I don't even see any disadvantages that he has.
As for really "broken" ships, IIRC there's a certain hidden plane in Strikers 1999 which is uber-powerful...some also call the Flying Pancake in Strikers II much more powerful than the other craft. Then there's the yellow ship in the PS1 port of Soukyugurentai...

the X-36, yup it's broken.BulletMagnet wrote:As for really "broken" ships, IIRC there's a certain hidden plane in Strikers 1999 which is uber-powerful...
can't say I agree with this at all. I thought the Flying Pancake was better in Strikers 1945 Plus. I think Hayate is usually the preferred choice of Strikers 1945 II.some also call the Flying Pancake in Strikers II much more powerful than the other craft.
nah. there are still a few ships worth using in that game IMOTwiddle wrote:Red Rabbit in Aero Fighters 3

The Schabe in Einhander. sure, at first it was weak, but levelling it up to 20 and using it's homing shots the game became way too easy. and it's hitbox was smaller than the Endymions and Astraea, almost like something you'd find in a bullet-hell shmup.
To be fair, though, it's only weakness was setting the speed any higher than the lowest setting made it feel like trying to control a fully sped-up Vic Viper in Gradius 3. and the lowest setting was sluggish to say the least.
But seriously, after that, it was an ungodly fighter, not even the Salene secret ship was as good.

I remember a topic like this before the great forum crash. let me see if I can remember what I posted there.
X-36 was mentioned, and so was the Slave in RF2, RFJ. Other cheese ships I can think of:
*Kid Dracula in SFC Gokujyou Parodius: Fully Grade-Up this guy's homing missiles and implement a shield, and you're pretty much unstoppable.
*The Judge Spear (RF) can be almost considered broken due to its high speed and fast bomb and high attack fully powered up.
*Mr. Heli in R-Type Final: Its crystal charge shot is extremely powerful.

The age of Alluro and JudgeSpear is over.

Broken, definitely. Laser in both regular and Kakusei modes is the most powerful in the game. Speed is quick enough to bullet-lead. Why do you think so many people - including those up until now are unable to finish even Thunderforce 3 - get their first ALL using Ageha?BulletMagnet wrote:Preferred by many, but hardly "broken," I'd say.CIT wrote:Ageha in Espgaluda
Seriously overpowered.
Besides, real men pick Tateha. ^_-

You sure? Maybe I've been doing something wrong, but it seems to me that, at least in "normal" form, Tatty's laser is actually a bit more powerful than Aggy's...it's not a huge amount, but it seems that I almost always kill bosses a few moments quicker with Tatty's laser than Aggy's. Though his has better coverage in both forms (especially Kakusei), I think hers has a little more power behind it...Icarus wrote:Laser in both regular and Kakusei modes is the most powerful in the game.
Off to the side, I haven't 1CCed Galuda yet, but as of right now I've come closer to doing it with Tatty than with Aggy, oddly enough.

Probably because 1) people tend to shy away from slow ships, especially beginners and 2) Galuda, with the exception of a few patterns thrown out by the last boss is not that hard of a game to play for survival.Icarus wrote:Broken, definitely. The world records for each character are within 500,000 pts of each other, with Tateha in the lead, if I remember right.

I've always held that the X-36 wasn't so much overpowered, but rather all the other ships just plain suck. Was it too much to ask for a ship with decent speed, a powerful beam, and homing shots??
The Flying Pancake (Strikers 1945 II) and Marion (Gunbird 2) have at least some of those qualities, and they're not game breakers...

Re: broken characters/ships in a vertical shooter?
Yeah, it depends on what kind of 'broken' we're talking here. You could say Flying Pancake was broken because you could use the autoaim shots as a lazy man's way to rack a score higher than normal, but you'd still have to deal with more enemies and bosses becoming longer-lasting threats, explaining the extra speed as compensation. I'd call Pancake more of an 'veteran's ship' than a broken one.BBH wrote:can't say I agree with this at all. I thought the Flying Pancake was better in Strikers 1945 Plus. I say Ragnarock 2. Rename that ship the Cakewalk.Alluro wrote:*Mr. Heli in R-Type Final: Its crystal charge shot is extremely powerful.
I remember there being a broken boss in Gunbird (at least the Mobile Light Force version). That boss was something like a black pirate ship. When you pissed it off and it morphed into some flying thing, it forgets to shoot at you. I think you can jumpstart it's firing patterns if you do something different like a bomb.
fuck verts.
Michael and Koitsu in the Parodius' are pretty unbalanced in your favor. You don't really need anybody else unless you're seeking fun or ya can't sort out your shots from the enemies.

Yeah, that's only in the MLF version. All versions under the proper Gunbird -name work correctly.DJ Incompetent wrote:I remember there being a broken boss in Gunbird (at least the Mobile Light Force version). I just purchased R-Type Final, so I haven't unlocked all the ships yet, but of the stock ships I'd say the R-9F is the most powerful. The charge weapon is most gratifying & very capable, especially against bullets.Alluro wrote:*Mr. Heli in R-Type Final: Its crystal charge shot is extremely powerful.
