Barco ADVM20 - Green tint

Post by Namingway_PL »

Hello!

I have a Scientific Atlanta (Barco) ADVM20 that has this green tint. The monitor was recently RGB modded but this green tint was there before the mod. Also the red color seems overblooming when I turn up the saturation ( the RGB signal gets converted to YPbPr Internally so saturation works in RGB ). Aside from the color issues the image looks pretty fantastic. The geometry and convergence are top, and the 1000 TVL make the image super detailed and razor sharp.

Anyone has an idea what can this be? Or where should I start?

It's impossible to make any judgements based on the pictures, but I believe this is a combination of various factors. Main issue is most likely the white balance being off. Fixing it requires a colorimeter that's been properly profiled for CRTs with a spectro, as well as a pattern generator and suitable software like ColourSpace.

With the conversion between RGB<->YUV, color matrixes may not stay intact depending on how the controls are set up (either in terms of potentiometers or software). This often lead to inconsistencies, both mathematically and in the long run visually. Depending on the mod itself and the circuits doing the conversion, it may not be fully fixable. If the picture with the color bar is somewhat representative then the red luminance is most likely too low.

Also have to wonder if the green tint is sync related, since that is also something that happens on other monitors that normally support RGB but can have a green tint when using certain sync types.

By the way, is there a guide or at least some info related to RGB-modding this model? There doesn't seem to be a lot of documentation out there for it.

@nissling Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a problem with callibration, as I tried to mess a bit with Bias/Gain settings but that didn't do much about the green tint. As You noticed the red lacks intensity as I lowered the gain because it looked weird. Like it seemed overblooming and had a reddish halo around red objects. Strange thing is that when i turn on the individual guns red, green and blue the colors look good.

@fernan1234 Not really sync related as it looks pretty much the same with every input. I'm starting to think its probably a faulty component somewhere. i've heard that this monitor internally converts into Ypbpr colour space so maybe it's an issue with that.

I need to find someone in Europe who would want to service it. But that will be hard as hell... Such a shame as it's a fantastic monitor...

It sounds like the picture tube is worn out and the red gun is failing. Is there a way to see how many hours are on it's done (there should be a counter somewhere)?

Put a grey scale pattern on the screen and see what it looks like on the high and low end of the scale. If you can find a way to swap the drive to the green and red guns over on the neck board then do that and look at the greyscale pattern again. If it looks the same - it's the picture tube at fault.
