It was important as a tech website (to me) and has been this kind of near constant presence in my life since the early 2000s. Once a week or so, I have checked and read articles on this site since that time. Feels like a bit of kick to the gut to suddenly have it disappear, although I honestly never would have expected to care.
Ryan Smith issued a farewell on Friday that I'm just now seeing.
Really it all started to unravel when Anand left the site to work for Apple in 2014. His loss was immediate and impactful on the site, as there were no longer the same updates to the CPU architecture story that Anand is so good at; he has a way of turning the evolution of technology into a compelling narrative, even down to the smallest details.
That being said, Ryan Smith did an above-average job of replacing him, and it seemed as though the site was on track to be a staple in the tech journalism industry forever. Somehow it must have not been profitable enough (as hinted at in the farewell statement).
Wanted to share the news with anyone here that found the site interesting, or perhaps to encourage people to go take a look at the older articles. It's supposed to stay up for awhile.

Oh man, dang. I feel the same. Thanks for your post.
Re: Anandtech Closes
I noticed it was gone (well, archived for now). Sad to see it go, i never registered for an account there but i have scooped through the frontpage articles for the better part of the last 10+ years i think. There are other sites i would have minded less to see go
