Mechanical Arcade Games

Post by MOSQUITO FIGHTER »

I think this stuff is fascinating. This is what gaming used to be. A rug on rollers, a black light, and some paint and bam you have arcade game. Wild stuff.

I think it would be cool to see some of the better ones ported over like they do with pinball machines.

Super cool stuff.

I remember playing a game like this but it was a target practice game where you shot at a cup. If you hit the cup it would "shatter" into a bunch of pieces. Pretty convincing illusion, I have no idea how they did it.

Also, this seems somewhat adjacent to old school pinball games. One of my friends has one of the old machines made out of wood. Not a motherboard or a computer chip in sight. It keeps score with a rotary dial and you can smell the solenoids burning after a while. I think it's from the 1950's.

I have seen a couple. I know there were some EM driving games. I remembering playing a periscope game that was pretty fun. The original Wild Gunmen was an EM cabinet that used 16mm film, a light gun, and two flashing lights for the eyes that were the real target (the NES Wild Gunmen even had some references to this like the flashing eyes). Oddly enough, Sega brought it to the US despite being made by Nintendo. Not sure if they still have them since it has been a while since I have been to Ocean City, MD, but I remember one of the arcades there having some EM games. I remember one of those Love Testers, some puck bowling games, and a couple light gun games.

The game I was thinking about was "Quick and Crash."

Here's a video about how the game and how the visual effect works. (Skip to 1:45 if you just want to see the cup illusion.)

They have a couple of Ice Cold Beer machines at my local arcade. Fun game.
