Kung Fu Panda 4: **1/2
Not much to say about this one really. Po faces yet another generic villain with supernatural powers trying to conquer the world, this time aided by another new character who was probably designed mostly to look good on the toy store shelves, all while trying to dodge the unavoidable character development you know he'll end up with. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to make money (and with the theatrical release slate still pretty barren as a result of last year's writers and actors strikes, it's become the third highest grossing film of 2024 almost by default.) Add in the mostly unnecessary B-plot of Po's fathers (it makes sense in context) chasing after him on his adventure and a couple of quite possibly unintentional fourth wall breaks and there's just a little bit of weirdness under the surface, but probably not enough to make it particularly memorable. Even if you've seen the previous films in the series you'll probably need to go to Wikipedia to remember who some of the characters from previous films appearing in this one are. Then again, I don't think anyone in the target audience for these films is over the age of 12, so you can be forgiven for not remembering a thing.
I'm pretty sure that by now this series is the Panda Express of films. Vaguely Chinese and about as authentic as a 3 dollar bill, but it's reasonably palatable if you have to sit through it, and it makes plenty of money so they're all over the place. You'll leave the restaurant (or theater in this case) full, but 24 hours later you'll probably completely forget that you even ate/watched it.

Shin Godzilla has some truly amazing destruction, but it takes its sweet time getting there. I'm sure if I was Japanese the whole Fukushima thing would hit pretty hard, but I'm am impatient American who just wants to see stuff smash and boom.

I just found it cheesy -- and the cherry on top was the Japanese / "American" girl that could barely string a sentence together in English, and when they did, it was tweeny after school TV shit. It just wasn't my bag. I see the appeal though.

happy-go-lucky (2008 mike leigh starring sally hawkins). I'd say it's middle of the pack for mike leigh. both sally hawkins and eddie marsan were fantastic, but the character hawkins portrayed (poppy) was pretty unbearable. I know that's the point of the character, but it really put a damper on the experience for the both of us.

I probably liked it more than it deserved. I like how it's kind of the inverse of Naked.Some-Mist wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 5:40 pm happy-go-lucky (2008 mike leigh starring sally hawkins). Interesting take, but yeah you're right. I watched it because a buddy of mine absolutely loved it and recommended it. It's rated pretty high too, so I think it just wasn't our thing.Lord British wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 5:45 pmI probably liked it more than it deserved. Last movies I've seen are The Chaser, Shadow of The Thin Man and The Thin Man Goes Home. The Chaser is a flippin classic folks, bloody as heck but still an amazing thriller folks need to see. Shadow of The Thin Man however is when the The Thin Man series started going downhill. It's easily the worst of the series. Thankfully The Thin Man Goes Home is a better movie and has a fun twist at the end that you really don't see coming. I love how Nick just has to be smug and arrogant with each case wrap-up as he gets to the point of how he figured out who the killer is. Plus their dog is cute! How can you hate a movie with a cute dog?

very entertaining, I was pleasantly surprised
the summary on IMDB makes it sound awful but it's actually a very good movie in my opinion

The Bad Guys: ***1/2
2022 animated film that's basically a big loud heist movie for kids, which somehow manages to actually pull it off well enough to earn an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A group of anthropomorphic thieves (a wolf, shark, snake, tarantula and piranha) get caught while trying to pull off their biggest job, after which a guinea pig philanthropist undertakes some sort of plot-convenient experiment to try to reform them into good guys with decidedly mixed results. I'm sure some of the more jaded movie-goers in the audience can probably predict some of the inevitable plot twists, but the 12 year olds watching in the next seat will likely be shocked. The animation is, aside from a couple of oddly designed characters that feel out of place, highly kinetic and action-packed (but since it's a Dreamworks film a fart joke or two along the way are inevitable) without the patronizing tone of similar Illumination films. Probably worth a watch if you're looking for something a bit on the lighter side.

RUN YOU MORONS!!
Not to not comment the obvious on this: this unflappable trio looks away from the cow-launcher in the back with the meaningful appreciation as if it were right in front of them, only showing in the mirror.
Poster art, dudes! It's in the pits.
Thanks for sharing! What, no sharks or dinos in this?! Funbags, though?

Re: RUN YOU MORONS!!
Clearly they are looking at one of the other tornados. There is also one to be seen in the mirror of the car. But judging by the angle, it's not the one they are looking at. This means there are at least three different tornados at once in this movie. If this isn't enough of a reason to watch it then I don't know.NYN wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 3:41 pm Not to not comment the obvious on this: this unflappable trio looks away from the cow-launcher in the back with the meaningful appreciation as if it were right in front of them. Yes, the mirror twister was pointed out to me. And what a huge visual threat that signals, tiny as it is. Still offensive in scale. Wouldn't want to watch.

This looks like the perfect stupid sequel to one of my favorite stupid movies. I hope there's a whole herd of cows!
Just please stick the landing and don't turn out like the ID4 sequel.

Re: Movies you've just watched
They come up with all these stunning ideas like more than one twister in the same movie and you don't even appreciate it.
I just realized this must be why the movie is called TwisterS with an "S" at the end! It's because there isn't just one twister, but there are several twisters in the same area at the same time that they have to deal with! This movie will be amazing. I will watch the prequel asap to get in the mood: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117998/Arino wrote: ↑Tue Jul 09, 2024 3:56 pmClearly they are looking at one of the other tornados. blow me away
I demand that they find a super-plausible way to conjure up the character played by the late great Bill Paxton, as close as a sentient dust devil ghost manifestation, leaving cryptic messages in bovine populations, only to help fight those malignant twistersesss' to save the corn and the box office, AND to build a successful franchise so that the public demand will exist to see twisters in a intergalactic space race! Just think about it...SPACE TWISTER

Re: Movies you've just watched
Kinds of Kindness was probably the most excited I've been for a movie all year, but it's really a hard watch.
It was the first time I've seen people walk out of a movie since Kung Pow(twice!), so there's that.
Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are fantastic, it's just the darkest of dark comedies. The three stories are a comedy, horror, and black comedy, respectively.
Also, The Dance is even funnier in context, and hits at the perfect time.

I don't know if I can go for kinds of kindness tbh. It's been getting more difficult for me to get into hard to watch stuff. I enjoyed poor things and the set pieces were incredible, but I will never be able to get myself to watch it again. I didn't really care for the lobster too, although I absolutely love the talent in it.
And speaking of hard to watch stuff, I've been trying to find something new to watch for tonight and I was going to start Berlin Alexanderplatz, but watching a weirdly edited trailer it looks like there might be some rape scenes in it. Can anyone confirm/deny? The Lone Wolf and Cub movies were great, but the rape scenes in those were pretty brutal and I'd like to avoid that again. I think we're gonna go with Bicycle Thieves tonight.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I saw Dead Calm for the first time. Damn that's cool! Three actors, a simple but effective plot that vaguely resembles The Hitcher, but perhaps even better since there are no escape routes in the ocean (and it is even more beautiful to see). Lots of twists and turns, a lot of survival also (i love survival). The ending is strange, because it has one, and then a real, short one... unusual.
The translation of the title in my country is even better than the original title. Translateable as
"10 o'clock, flat calm"

I only watched the first episode of Berlin Alexanderplatz and he rapes someone soon into it (the sister of the wife he killed iirc) but I don't remember it being graphic.Some-Mist wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2024 6:27 pm I don't know if I can go for kinds of kindness tbh. Last night went to see the weekly revival film at my local theater Humanoids From the Deep
It was a hell of a lot of fun! Basically a monster movie with sea creatures that attack a small town in the Pacific Northwest, but it's got a lot more going on under the hood, even if it's not the most cerebral outing. There are some strong points made about native American rights and the effects of capitalism in this tiny little titty flick. Of course it doesn't hurt that Roger Corman is at the helm and the main action revolves around mutated sea creatures impregnating the local babes.
Absolutely recommend. No strings attached.
I really feel very lucky to be so close (2 blocks) to a great theater that has the good sense to screen older movies a couple times a week.

Cool I'm gonna watch this too! They also show a lot of old movies where I live but I've never been to one. I just checked and they are currently showing ELEVEN movies that are not new. That's insane. That's almost more than the new movies that are on. Half of those eleven movies are Spiderman movies btw.vol.2 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 20, 2024 5:28 am Last night went to see the weekly revival film at my local theater Humanoids From the Deep
