HD Fury X3 died on me. Looking for a good and cheap HDMI -> VGA adapter

Post by Ikaruga11 »

So my HD Fury X3 randomly died today and now I need to find a replacement. Do you guys know of any good and inexpensive HDMI -> VGA converters that don't lag, don't scale the resolution, and doesn't compromise the picture quality?

I don't think you'll have an easy time finding something as nice as the HD Fury X3.

But for 1080p 60, pretty much any HDMI adapter out there will get the job done. There are a few crappy ones out there but it seems most are fine.

Also, something not a lot of people realize, is that their monitors can probably also do 1440p from a PS5. Like most 19" CRT monitors can do 1440p, maybe even a rare few 17". You just need a 100kHz horizontal frequency

So yeah, if your monitor has a 100kHz max horizontal scan rate, you might want to look at this particular adapter: https://www.ebay.com/itm/386722559061

It can go up to 390mHz pixel clock, making it a pretty good option for use with modern GPUs

You'll probably want to try a few cheap ones until you find one that does the job for you. You'll most likely find that one DAC is good for HD but not SD and vice versa (the HDF X3 is actually better for HD).

The research done on DAC's for the MiSTer Direct Video mode is probably going to be your best resource. The 5 star DAC's other than the HDfury X3/X4 all seem to be Icybox variants. Everything on the list is lag free with no scaling.

edit: Hopefully a community made DAC with reference levels is made some day. This list isn't that old and products are already going out of stock/production. Even on the high end with HDFury themselves having limited stock of the X3/X4 this situation could start looking really bleak within a couple of years.

I'm trying this these days

https://www.amazon.com/BENFEI-Compatibl ... 07CTK4TH4/

which is cheap, available everywhere, and got three stars under the SNES Mister core test and I can notice some brightness loss, at least for 480p from a PC. Not sure if that's what you should expect, I tried with a more expensive HP DAC and it didn't happen (but there were other issues when you changed the resolution).

The Moread adapter is also good. Got one the other week and verified that it has the CS5210 chip (had to open it up by blowing hot air on the side with the VGA port to soften the glue and then pried off the plastic front).

Haven't bothered hooking it up to my oscilloscope to see if it has the "A" or "B" quality, though, since I'm not that picky.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some adapters handle resolution changes better than others, someone on the misterfpga forums reported that one of the Icybox adapters has a delay of several seconds upon a resolution change, making Castlevania Bloodlines unplayable:

These cheaper DACs also don't have a dedicated audio output, so you might need to use an HDMI audio extractor for consoles that only have audio output over HDMI.
