I've never enjoyed traditional fighters and only played them as a teen because other people I knew did. I grew up playing sidescrollers and generally more orthodox games. Street Fighter and it's ilk never clicked with me. Up to jump, can't turn around, heavier movement, motion inputs for most actions. It's just never been anything I wanted to seriously put time into building muscle memory for. So that's why I gravitated to Smash Bros and similar games as they play more like what I grew up on. Freer and far wider ranges of movements and more familiar control schemes has me right at home.
I'm glad to see devs care less and less about the stigma that comes with entering a genre Nintendo dominates because the these kind of games are _deeply_ lacking sufficient competition.
