GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
No, only Voultar's SNESRGB. I know of the mod but I wasn't sure if like the RT5X the GBS could combat it with frame buffers or whatnot.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
It's recommended to have it when using any scaler/multiplier. I seem to recall frequency was a bit high with my snes as well prior to installing the dejitter mod, and normalized once installed. 60.0 - 60.15hz is not uncommon from my experience.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Okay so last night I played SNES for a solid 5 hours on the 1920X1080 preset and... no tearing!
I also didn't realize at first that 1920X1080 actually is a 4:3 pillarboxed output so, that's good too. Although that raises a question on how to correctly upscale 16:9 content with the GBS, I'm assuming only with the 1280X720 preset which actually isn't pillarboxed, or can you remove the pillarboxes on the 1080p preset?
So now I'm trying to use my PSP with component cables, all looks good until you go into a game and then you get the massive borders (480X272 embedded into a 720X480 frame), trying to manually crop and scale the picture in the GBS software eventually makes it look like a garbled mess:
Default:
Manual scaling to remove borders:
AFAIK OSSC has a PSP preset for this but trying to manually adjust such a small picture to fullscreen just brings in a lot of distortion. I know theres other devices out there that give you a fullscreen but was kinda hoping to use GBS with everything, dunno if anyone has managed to combat this.

1280x720 profile is the only 16:9 profile. Tour assessment of the 1080 profile is correct, and there is no getting rid of the pillar boxing in the 1080 profile.
PSP and resolutions outside of 16:9 and 4:3 are probably not the best use case for gbs-c. It is after all an inexpensive, feature rich scaler, but not necessarily a solution for all use cases.

Hi
Now that my UVC is playing up , I would like to have a go at making one of these , can anyone help me out and point me in the right direction for all the parts I need , I'm in the UK.
I mainly want this for 480p to 240p downscaling.
Thanks

Yeah tbh up to now I was just using one of those cheap Scart to HDMI scalers and with my monitor not having component I'm happy to at least be able to play PSP on TV again, its a great little device.NoAffinity wrote:1280x720 profile is the only 16:9 profile. One other thing I was wondering about was composite input. The McBazel amazon listing recommends to buy one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Mcbazel-Componen ... B0B2WFTDGF
$60 seems a bit much for such a thing, would one of these not work on the scart input:
I'm assuming not lol
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
No it wouldn't - there is no composite input for GBS.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Thought I saw someone says composite works on the green channel on the component input , could be dreaming that though.
But surely that would just display a green screen ?

The green channel in component is luminance, so you might be able to get a black and white image on that with composite.

Yes, it has been confirmed that feeding composite to the green the y inout of the comoownnet input will give you a black and white signal.
What is that adapter doing with s video? Scart doesn't natively have chroma and luma pins does it?

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
There was some kind of standard where you could feed chroma to the red pin (15) on SCART. It's all very confusing but yeah, some devices could accept s-video through SCART.
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
Is there a preferred GBS unit for this project?
Thanks
Thanks

^Black button units. Look for ebay sellers in your region, and message them to confirm their units have black buttons (pictures on postings arent always accurate).

Hi
When i finally workout how to mod one of these properly , i was wondering can this be run in a cab via Jamma Fingerboard
So say
PC VGA input into GBS
RGB Header / Power / Controls into Jamma Fingerboard
Thanks

As long as you're not trying to downscale rgbhv, and the cab's monitor is compatible with the resolution the gbs is outputting, it should work.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
ok. I was asking more like if there is a model that's better. There's at least two of the (8200 and 8220), and I'm just really starting to think about this seriously, so I'm not aware if one is better than the other, or if there's been newer models introduced somewhere in the span of the past 157 pages lol.NoAffinity wrote:^Black button units. But that's a good tip about the button colors. Tbh, I'm not seeing any local listings for anything that isn't already modded and asking over $100 for. There's plenty of boards from China for like $14-20.

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
^^black buttons are the only real qualifier. There are quality variations across all revisions, no guarantee that any particular model will have more or less noise, last longer or die sooner. But, black button models will work with gbs control.

idk, $12 is a lot for just the chip though if someone wants to get 5 for 50.80, I would buy one of them.

I mean not really? It's still cheaper than the GBS and it's less work to not have to desolder it firstvol.2 wrote:https://www.aliexpress.us/item/22518327 ... _shipto=US

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
and it's definitely cheaper than paying for shipping after the $2 discount, I guess I didn't think that one through. Only problem is it's aliexpress, so who know if it works, and it might take months to show up (especially at free shipping).maxtherabbit wrote:I mean not really? Although, the other problem is that it needs those other chip from the GBS (the SDRAM). I wouldn't know how to spec that on Mouser, do you?
Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
I think you have to desolder, the Tvia and SDRAM seemed to have been harvested by the creator

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
This got me wondering about whether the original MCU could be removed entirely and have the ESP8266 in its place (you can see my efforts in the replies to that tweet somewhere). It's able to talk to the Tvia chip and do things such as change resolutions and settings, but it doesn't detect any incoming video signals.
I know that this is possible to do, I've been pouring over the Shinobi's schematic this afternoon and seem to be doing everything the same (wiring the appropriate pins to 3v3 and ground, adding resistors to the 3v3 rail for SCL/SDA etc.) but it feels like there's something missing.

you don't have to. the TVIA chip and SDRAM can be purchased seperately, but I need the spec of the SDRAM to do so. That's what I'm asking.

This is the SDRAM used in the Shinobi schematics:vol.2 wrote: Although, the other problem is that it needs those other chip from the GBS (the SDRAM). I wouldn't know how to spec that on Mouser, do you?

Saw this on the GBS-C FB group, more units are now being sold with an onboard sync combiner/switch. I presume this eliminates the need to use an external combiner? So one (ME) could send Dreamcast VGA input, have it downscaled to 480i/240p and output component video?

Re: GBS 8200/8220 CFW Project
It says "Saturn rgbs/ypbpr out", via what looks like a genesis2/3 connector. Curious what they are doing there and what kind of cable you would need for the ypbpr part.
But, yes, in theory, if the sync combiner works for DC rgbhv input, then downscaling should work for it.
