Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Old movie, new Alamo. The wife surprised me with tickets to the original TMNT at the Alamo on Staten Island.
It's so new that it was listed on Google as closed when we went. The theater itself is nicely laid out and Alamo ran hard with SI's Shaolin background. The entire place is covered in posters from old kung fu movies and the themed bar is called The Flying Guillotine. I know where I'm going for kung fu movies.
Anyway in some strange twist I had never seen the original turtles movie. It was silly and fun. Looking forward to going back as it is really easy to get to. In fact with this place opening I now live equidistant from two Alamos.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Wow. That wasn't even a social option for me. My friend group was so into TMNT that we were there opening night and went back three times during matinee showings. It was one of the defining cinematic moments of my life; the first time I had ever experienced grown-ass adults so hype over a movie and screaming "turtle power" in the audience. Totally surreal and amazing.Stevens wrote: Anyway in some strange twist I had never seen the original turtles movie. It was silly and fun. The Northman.
Weird the guy who plays Eric Northman in True Blood gets to play the Northman here.
With that out the way, the movie doesn't deserve the 5* rating on the cover. Its very slow.. Some nice cinemaphotography but thats it. The cast is great as well with some odd ball roles for Kidman and Defoe.
Its a viking story about a man wanting revenge for his mom and papa. Weird rituals and long speeches along with long walking and boating.
I'd give it a 4/10. Don't expect Gladiator or Braveheart.

I recently finished the 4.5 hour long documentary, In Search of Darkness. 7.5 out of 10 stars
Fantastic to see all the great interviews and really fun to watch them tell their stories of working on some of the most iconic horror films of the 70s and 80s. One criticism is that they didn't really uncover many hidden gems. I at least already knew about almost every film they touched on with maybe three or four things I hadn't. Would have been nice to walk away with a list of new stuff to watch.
IAC, highly recommended to any horror fans with a free afternoon.

You might check out (if you hadn't already) Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror. It covers a ton of stuff outside the norm.

One of the weaker Marvel films for me. I also found it unintentionally hilarious that one of the characters was called 'America'. Quite liked some of the more horror aspects of the film, but the pacing felt a little weird to me.

I just saw Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Cute little animations about a tiny shell (with shoes) walking around a house that seems gigantic, set to a very indie story about finding family, I enjoyed my time at the picture show, be warned that the movie is cloyingly sweet and Millennial overload, i don't know how to describe it. I don't meant it like product placement, it's how everyone talks. You know, it's like, I don't know, that way where, like you might say something, but then you don't, but your like not really sure, like you know what I mean? I don't know, just like a thought or something.

Thor: Love and Thunder: ***
Christian Bale, having failed to die a hero, lives long enough to become the villain in a Marvel movie, becoming the second Batman to do so (Michael Keaton played the Vulture in Spider Man Homecoming. Val Kilmer is going to be a lot trickier to get these days, unfortunately.) A decent movie overall, but I still liked Ragnarok better.

Coco - Very enjoyable experience. Starts off amazing and then falters a bit towards the middle, but overall it was a worthy watch.
Sing 2 - fantastic opening and ending, with a passable middle section.
Nobody - John Wick wannabe? It's one of those movies that has the 80s action cheese. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Batman (the new one) - pretty good. Not sure it needed it be so long, but it was paced well. Not convinced on Pattison's understated Batman, though I didn't hate him either. Colin Farrell was marvelous as the Penguin. I was actually shocked when I found it was him. Looking forward to seeing more of Barry Keoghan's Joker. Some excellent casting decisions overall, I have to say.
Batman vs TMNT - I'm not sure if this even belongs here. Some good, some bad. Not really recommended.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2... sigh. I have complaints.
The clip of this thing tricked me so much. Made it look like the best movie ever made. "At its very worst, at least it'll be entertaining more than not!" I thought.
Wrong, it's almost complete doo-doo.
The wiki says they had a budget of $250,000 and told to just re-edit the first movie to scam people. So it's 60% stock footage. And the stock footage is the best part, lightly seasoned with psycho killers, boobies, a cop murdering the shit out of an innocent old guy with all the consequence of "oops sorry 'bout that", and improbable physics. The dialogue and social interactions seem to have been written by an Mi-Go trying to ape human behavior. Many Shiki-like scenes of the same scene happening but with different people filling the roles, except instead of being a 20 minute loop they're 50 second loops. Such a waste, even with the small resources they had.
I was somewhat confused when I saw the claim of a reboot coming out this year.
... I regret everything. I could have watched a Friday the 13th movie, I've never actually watched one of those through before. I could have finally gotten around to watching Turbo Kid. What the fuck is wrong with me.
Damn masochism

Warning in case you watch our virtual BFFs RLM's Friday 13th retrospective and pick the one with Crispin Glover: his amazing dance was actually to AC/DC's Back In Black, not the track by Lion (of Transformers The Movie acclaim) used in the final cut. I'm telling you this now, so you won't go around for years amazed at his stunningly fresh interpretation of the obscure Hasbro toy hawkers' entirely generic tune! Sorry to be cruel to be kind, the lie must be exposed
I could never get into yankee/UK slashers. Best I can do is Argento and co, with their super stylish black leather killers and hilariously unconcealed fetish for killing supermodels. Profundo Rosso and Tenebrae, there's a good double feature! Consider also The House With Laughing Windows, that one's RIGHT FOOKED M8!

Re: Movies you've just watched
Death Note / Last Name
Death note has always hit me as a wonder world that could be expanded beyond what is here. I often watch it and expand on the universe in my head and there is lots untouched. Whilst the movies I have watched sit in the world of a teenager it never truly develops beyond the Tokyo area. The netflix adaptation sticks to the teenager formula and ruins it by being a school locker corridor fest and ignores Ryuk to save money. I adore these movies but they do have a habit of being a silly cat and mouse childs game with fatal consequences. I don't know if Netflix still hold the rights but I think its one of the properties they have touched which could expand to be a big big franchise that could go on for many seasons. With reboots of super hero movies going on and on, I believe something like Death note can be rebooted well. The Netflix show didn't even touch on the police and how they would handle it. We never saw the death god world. Considering it could theoretically be made quite cheap for the most part it suits the netflix style of having effects just for the showdowns. If Avatar (Air bender) can get huge budgets and Lord of the Rings can get huge budgets I think there is a lot that can be done here. Death note is getting old now and nobody I speak to has even heard of it. It doesn't have the exposure to the masses it deserves.
I always felt that the live action movies did most of what the anime did rolled into 3 or 4 hours. But the franchise should not have killed main characters at the end of part 2. Sometimes you get too little of a good thing and this is the case here.
I give the live action movies a 8.5/10 and worth a watch.

You've been watching the wrong ones, then!BIL wrote:I could never get into yankee/UK slashers.
The original Halloween is still a masterpiece.
Candyman and The Devil's Rejects are straight up bangers by any measure.
Do you want novelty deaths? Final Destination and Hatchet have you covered.
Do you want creepy weirdness? It Follows or Mom & Dad will get you there.
Do you want comedy? Bride/Seed of Chucky and the Babysitter movies are tons of fun.
If you want stuffy atmospheric shit with hilariously over-the-top gore there's always the various Hannibal movies, although I wouldn't call any of those slashers except maybe the TV show.
ETA: Just realized I mentioned a Samara Weaving movie and didn't recommend Ready Or Not. Watch Ready Or Not, it's the best Final Girl movie ever.
ETA2: Also missed The Guest, which is fucking excellent.
King's Field IV is the best Souls game.

If you're more fond of the Italian angle, I'd suggest Nightmare Beach aka Welcome to Spring Break by Umberto Lenzi and co. It's a fuckin' hoot. It tries to imitate the American slasher and it's absolutely bonkers. Has a hard rock/metal OST as well!BIL wrote:I could never get into yankee/UK slashers. My theater the Music Box is showing the new 4k restoration of Lost Highway this weekend. I saw it for the first time earlier this year at that Lynch film festival, but why not again! Mary Sweeney will be there for QnA from all the tedious film students and sweaties in the audience.

That sounds amazing, the ambience and that ending sequence in particular are gonna be fuckin intense in a good cinema setup.
I want to save DARLING ERINOR-CHAN and then bone her all night (;`w´;)
I'm talking more the straight-up "beautiful young people get graphically murdered by lurking killer, news at 10" stuff characterised by Friday The 13th. They just don't do much for me, other than an occasional laugh at the absolute most ridiculously mean-spirited kills (RIP wheelchair homie ) Combine it with the usual idiocy (Yeah bro, go take a shit in the porta-potty while singing loudly to your GF outside, great idea!) and I tire out fast.
TBH I'd put even the OG Halloween fairly clear of this stuff - it at least has some considerable appeal beyond the slaying, which is relatively limited to begin with. There's that classic shot of the escaped patients wandering the field, the broad daylight stalking sequence, and of course good ol Donald Pleasance nailing line after line with improbable gravity. I'd put the OG Texas Chainsaw here too, sure it's technically "madman kills teens! News at 11," but the surrounding film is so beautifully done, the killing is simply part of its horror tableau rather than the entire attraction. Same for Hitchcock's Psycho.
DROP THAT CONTRABAND YOU FUCK (■`w´■)
Now that's-a beautiful kill! Mamma mia! Arrivederci!
I love both of those dearly, but I wouldn't consider them slashers; similarly, the thoroughly enjoyable, at times harrowingly cruel You're Next - more of a home invasion thriller, inverting Funny Games. I could've seen all three of these movies being Halloween IV, had that series' sadly short-lived anthology approach continued. Season Of The Witch is fuckin rad too... simultaneously goofy yet utterly evil, uncanny.Air Master Burst wrote:It Follows... The GuestBIL wrote:I could never get into yankee/UK slashers.

NY Ripper is especially great, because the killer has a Donald Duck voice! Speaking of ducks, Don't Torture a Duckling by Fulci is also A+ stuff. It's much more a straight giallo if you haven't seen it and would probably fit more to your preferences.
Would agree though, a handful of those mentioned above I have a hard time calling a slasher. "beautiful young people get graphically murdered by lurking killer" is a great summation. Said killer is also usually deformed/ill/wronged in some way I would say, too. The emphasis is on the murder, rather than the mystery. Kinda like how the aforementioned Bava gave birth to the genre of sorts with A Bay of Blood, yet most of his other popular work is a murder/mystery giallo.
I've always had a hard time accepting the original TCM as a slasher as well. I can see elements with Leatherface dispatching the teens, but the inclusion of the family and the way the plot moves and handles itself doesn't really line up with how the genre eventually formed imo. It doesn't quite fit in any particular horror sub-genre, which is why it's so damn good. Candyman is often also considered one, but I've never really seen it (at least the first) as such either. There's so much focus on the narrative and the mystery/lore, and hardly any on his murders; there's no real dispatchable cast to add to his blood trail, with primary attention to Madsen getting deeper and deeper into it all before she's absorbed.
But I get it; it's not always crystal clear, and some stuff overlaps. Kinda like how Krueger basically has no rules and turns kiddos to cockroaches or sticks them in a video game.
Slightly OT, but speaking of Bava, I gotta give a shoutout to his underrated Peplum stuff, Knives of the Avenger and Hercules in the Haunted World. Hercules in particular channels his horror blue-tinged lighting, making it really stand out in the genre. I always gravitate more towards the more fantastical stuff anyway, but if y'all like Harryhausen-ish Sinbad/Argonauts/Titans stuff it's damn fine and criminally under-viewed.

I'm recalling this one scene with a bloke suspended upside-down by a tree monster/dryad thing, which proceeds to basically annihilate his shit down the middle wishbone-style, while a horrified kid watches... does that ring a bell? I could swear I saw it in either a Fulci or Bava retrospective, but it's entirely possible I hallucinated the whole thing. Looked late 70s/early 80s.
Either way, Bava-directed Hercules does sound amazing! I need to do another proper beer run of this stuff - the last time around, I got through the Gates of Hell trilogy and Contraband, before that it was most of Argento's catalogue plus House With The Laughing Windows, the latter of which really stuck with me.

Hmm, that almost sounds like Prophecy (1979), which is great. A kid in a sleeping bag gets murdered in it, too. Top tier sleeping bag death. (Edit, maybe not. I thought there was a guy hanging from a tree that gets murdered in that, but I don't believe so.)
There is a monster of sorts in Hercules, but I can't recall all the details as it's been a few years since I've watched it.

Looks like it was the film's big gorno setpiece, judging by this Making Of. Buddy always brought the big showstoppers, like poor ol FAKE NUN / DRUG SMUGGLING NUN and her blowtorched boat race from Contraband

I'm not normally a fan of F13, but Jason X is batshit insane in the best way, and also has what's probably the best version of the sleeping bag kill.
King's Field IV is the best Souls game.

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

^Yup, that's the one I was referring to. It's too good. I see the tie-in novelization for it all the time and I never pick it up. Curious if that has the goods inside!
Night of the Demon also has bigfoot smacking someone around in one. And penis removal! And of course F13 VII has a great one as well. We need more.
