I was banging a chick once and she mentioned her favorite DM album was one of the post-Alan Wilder entries. I knew it was over after that, although I got another ride or two in.

Whoa, I never really had a thing for MFTM like I did for Violator. It's a great album, and the one that most Americans got to know them from (due to their US touring), but Violator is an album on another plane of existence; it holds a spot in the ether with the greatest, in which the stars had to be aligned in just such a way, and the musicians had to be on just the right cocktail of ludes and spite for it to happen.
But yeah, that's a bummer. Maybe Vince Clark will fill that spot on their next tour.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot what I came here to ask. I have a distinct memory of there being a short montage of the Rolling Stones "Can't You Hear me Knocking" at some point in Goodfellas. Now I know, I know they used that whole song for a bit in Casino, but I also have a memory of them using just the coda of the song in Goodfellas at some point towards the end. I haven't watched it in 20 years or more, so I totally might be conflating things and it never happened, but can someone please save me the trouble of rewatching it to find out?
I looked all over the internet and there's no mention (which makes me think I'm wrong and losing my mind)

Re: The Shmups.com Dead Pool *now accepting tragedies from 2
It's definitely in Casino, but I gotta admit it's not ringing a bell in Goodfellas. But Scorsese certainly never shied away from using the same song in multiple pictures (what's his "Gimme Shelter" count at now, I wonder...?), so I wouldn't rule it out just yet.
Man, those two films' soundtracks are such pleasures. Practically 2.5hr mafia-themed music videos. Everybody loves the Layla montage, for good reason - an unforgettable juxtaposition of base carnage and lilting beauty - but my favourite is probably Casino's maniacal deployment of DEVO's already mad "Satisfaction" cover, as Nicky's collapse begins in earnest.
"They shot Blue, thought his sandwich was a piece."
"Jeee-zus Fucken Christ! It was a fucken Hero Sandwich!"
"Whathafuck you want outta me?! It's pitch-black out heah!"
"So to get even, they shot up the cops' houses..."
An I said "bayyybeh baybeh baybehbaybehbaybeh*ROAR OF AUTOMATIC GUNFIRE*baybehbaybehbaybehbaybehbaybe just-can't-getta-NO! satis-faction~"
Fucken beaut that movie. Goodfellas is earthier but Casino has the staggering heights and unbridled cataclysmic collapse. Up n' up n' up until it comes down like a motherfucker. Practically the rollercoaster of the classic "ever-intensifying criminal shitstorm" genre.
Maybe this is immortality, to leave behind works that random douchebags and pricks will vaunt long after one's passing on. ;-;7

I think the technology came a LONG way between Music of the Masses and Violator and Alan Wilder could fully harness it. I've always felt Violator had a leg up on it's predecessors in that regard. I also think the Violator was the first album where they actually took 3 or more years to produce it, which apparently helped.vol.2 wrote:Whoa, I never really had a thing for MFTM like I did for Violator. Nonetheless, their back catalog is nuts.

I still listen to Violator, less so for Music for the Masses. Also, Wife and I just rewatched Goodfellas a couple months back, so this one was a real double whammy.
I remember working at Express for one Christmas season. Enjoy the Silence and Bowie's China Girl (and a few other songs) were repeated on loop ad nauseam. Still like both of those, though, so it didn't ruin them for me for too long.
Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that a lot of places now will play cover versions instead of the real deal? I've noticed that these past few years. Maybe a result of licensing deals and a proliferation of half-decent cover versions on Youtube?

Define places? DM have been covered 'til the cows come home. Not sure that I've heard a cover more than the original though. And most of the covers aren't the greatest (unless they are covering themselves acoustically). This one good tooo.pwuaioc wrote: Speaking of which, has anyone noticed that a lot of places now will play cover versions instead of the real deal? I've noticed that these past few years. Marc Maron has been paying tribute to the departed of late by removing interviews he did with them from the paywall. He's done so with 2 involving Ray Liotta. I've only listened to the one which only features him and it was a delightful hour.

Will enjoy those, thanks! Loved the talk you posted with him and Michael Kenneth Williams (RIP). Some silver lining to hear these guys opposite a quality interviewer like Maron.

He asks good questions - and I feel can relate to the actors specifically. Good stuff. And this particular episode does not disappoint.

Not to mention that China Girl itself is Bowie covering the Iggy Pop version (that bowie co-wrote, so he's also covering himself). I really, really prefer the version on The Idiot.
And yeah, DM has a great catalog no doubt at all. Black Celebration and Some Great Reward are up there for me as well. Speak and Spell is one of my favorite albums of all time, but you almost can't count that so much.
Re: The Shmups.com Dead Pool *now accepting tragedies from 2
Let me be clearer: I've noticed an uptick in restaurants playing a playlist of songs that are *all* covers. Some old, some new, some Depeche Mode, some not so much.vol.2 wrote:GaijinPunch wrote:Define places? DM have been covered 'til the cows come home. And I don't mean professional covers, like David Bowie's China Girl (which I didn't know! Thanks!). I'm talking about amateur grade or perhaps studio grade singers.
I think it has to do with licensing.

Best cover story ever: Way back when when I lived in Tokyo, I meandered into Mandarake to see if any deals were to be had. They had the worst fucking J-Pop tune on, being sung out of key. I was like... wtf is this?! Someone published this? I'm about to stab myself in both ears. Then I looked up and saw that it was some chick in a maid outfit doing karaoke.

I was a bit too young and couldn't easily access US TV during Twin Peaks' original run, but I was always aware of it via magazine articles, it was everywhere for a bit. I got into the series and Lynch at large in the mid-00s via KCET's Silent Hills, which cheerfully wear their debt to both (and Western horror/thriller canon at large) on their sleeve. "Falling" was quite humbling, Yamoka totally magpied that sound. The reverbed bass in particular, such a depthfully melancholic tone. The beloved second game, especially, wouldn't land like it does without that delicately smouldering template.
So I feel terribly sad to hear she's gone, despite having only a retroactive connection to her work (I have to admit I'd forgotten her name in the years since I marathonned The Return), because the stuff she directly inspired in another medium produced in a different country still moves me like it did when I was younger and less jaded. Which is I suppose a good indicator of the mark she left on pop culture. A treasure.

Spoiler
Her performance of The World Spins at the Roadhouse at the end of Part 17, just as Cooper "saves" Laura was magical. Such a peaceful song... just as Cooper absolutely fucks everything up.

Heck, even I'm not sure if I should feel sorry for this guy. Because of what happened during the Saturn era. It could have been the best console for Sega, we could have gotten games like Radiant Silvergun and Soukyugurentai localized early. But then...

Maybe unknown to a lot here, but Cuneyt Arkin, Turkish actor extraordinaire passed away at 85. Dude had so many movies under his belt over many decades and I've never seen a bad one. Most famous for Turkish Star Wars, aka The Man Who Saved the World. A lot of his movies play like beat 'em ups, as he just wrecks endless henchmen and minibosses. A true action hero.

Ahh, I remember that name from back in the early 00s. Never got around to his films, but The Man Who Saved The World alone was such a kingmaker, I never felt too left out. I should address that.

For all-out brawling, I highly suggest En büyük yumruk, aka The Biggest Fist. Pretttty sure there's English subs, but most of his stuff I have to watch without . My absolute favorite and an insane videogame fever dream, Ölüm Savaşçısı, aka Death Warrior is an imperative watch. Infinite ninjas, henchmen, monsters, etc! Also kinda has the Kenshiro vacuum arrow grab/throw.

Awww damn. What a legend! I haven't seem anything else, but Turkish Star Wars plays in the local theater here for revival night like once a year and it's always great fun. I'll have to check out some of his other films.drauch wrote:Maybe unknown to a lot here, but Cuneyt Arkin, Turkish actor extraordinaire passed away at 85. Damn, thought that name was familiar. Was wondering if he was still around not long ago... good run. I only really know him as Lloyd and Mr. Tyrell, but holy fuck, talk about dynamite turns in both, opposite legendary performers at that.

Even those of you, like me, who don't know much anime or manga have likely heard of Yu-Gi-Oh, whose creator, Kazuki Takahashi, was found dead at age 60. The write-up makes it sound like a possible accidental drowning, but they haven't officially determined the cause of death yet.
