Classic R-type on Wii!
Found on magicbox:

Exposes more people to the classic shmup!

The same as they do now, only sharper and with no scanlines.circuitface wrote:Yes! Ahh... how nice it will be to just play play R-Type on my tube without having to hook my pc or an old system up. I wonder how the old games will look on HD screens?
The Wii will use fairly standard emulation techniques to play these games. If you want a sneak peak, fire up an emulator on a PC/Mac and see.
Of course, I'd rather wait for the Wii. The chance to buy these games legally makes me a very happy man. See all my previous rants on emulation both here and on my blog.

Especially considering the PC Engine crashed and burned in Australia, and I myself personally never once saw it on shelves, which didn't exactly give me a fighting chance to buy the thing and play it as a kid.

I hope that they dress up the deal to make it seem more official if you get what i mean. I hope that when browsing through games to download we don't just get a list and that's it. I hope that each game has cool stuff like art and descriptions you can view before downloading. Maybe even preview movies? That way younger gamers can check stuff out before they make thier parents shell out the bucks...

Well that's all nice and fluffy, but doesn't change the way the game looks when you play it.circuitface wrote:I hope that they dress up the deal to make it seem more official if you get what i mean. I get what you mean, however. A few "extras" would be nice. Although to tell you the truth, if it means cheaper games to show them without the extra content, I'd rather that.
But still, some boxart scans and a few screenshots wouldn't hurt. And as you say: would certainly give the kiddies something to look at before shelling out dollars.

PCE R-Type is a great choice for one of the first Wii Virtual Console titles. If the price point is right and this is successful, this could draw new players to the hori shmup genre in general.
Hopefully it's the full set of levels, not just the first 4 stages of the original PCE card.

I hope not.Middlemoor wrote:Cool, but when are they going to stop re-releasing old shooters and start making new ones for the next-gen consoles?
But what fascinates me is that these titles are always titles that have already been ported so many times.
R-type has probably about 20+ ports.
R-type LEO has no port at all.
With this in mind they stil say, "LET'S PORT R-TYPE 1."
I wanna start a group to get all unported cool games to get ports.

it's even worse, it's probably going to be emulation of a port.. in fake low res of courseD wrote: I hope not.

Well yeah, if the "Virtual Console"-version is indeed the PCE/TG-16 version, then it's an emulation of a port. Kinda silly.chtimi-CLA wrote: it's even worse, it's probably going to be emulation of a port.. in fake low res of course
Luckily I still have my R-Types.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Ahhh... the TG16 version of R-Type is nice. Really nice. There's a bit of flicker when the screen gets thick with enemies, but overall, it's probably the nicest R-Type port prior to the advent of the Playstation (at least that I personally know of). They even throw in an extra boss on level 6, though this doesn't do anything for the purity of the port.
On a side note, I was always disappointed a true port of R-Type 2 never made it to the PC-Engine/TG16 or even Megadrive. The "R-Type 2 remix" that is Super R-Type on the SNES was oh so horribly botched. I would have much rather just have had a straight port of the arcade game, than the "fixed" version we received on the SNES. Apparently, they never heard the axiom, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I probably wouldn't be so bitter, if I had an arcade in my area that actually had an R-Type 2 cab when I was a kid. But as it stands right now, I have to say, "Booooo!" to heavily altered arcade-to-home ports.

These companies should have been selling and releasing ROMS of their games for last 8 years or so. I have never understood this - they are anti emulation and anti-ROM, and yet all they had to do was set up a server with a cheap little shopping cart feature and sell us all their ROMS. God knows I would gladly pay a fee to play all the great shmups of yesteryear and all the great Japanese console and arcade games that never came out here in the US (the whole region coding is a whole nother issue that is well past its prime and it makes no sense in a world that is now as small as ours).
It just don't make a lick of sense. Devs and publishers know that us older gamers love 2D games, and the arcade collections do sell pretty well. They also know that people use emulators and download ROMS for free. If they would have beaten the bootleggers at their own game, and started releasing OFFICIAL MAME ROMS and charging, chances are this whole debate would be rather pointless, and probably wouldn't even exist today.
The sad thing is that these companies have snoozed for so long, that I doubt they will ever be able to catch up or convince people that these old games are worth paying for when they are already available for free to download from 100s of sites.
Especially companies like TREASURE. I mean, they don't make a single penny off of the "collectors" on ebay ripping people off with copies of RADIANT SILVERGUN for $300. If TREASURE and other devs/publishers, would start a print/sell on demand website or a download for fee feature, they would in fact start to cure two problems - bootlegging, and "collectors" prices, both of which hurt the game players and the industry alike.
With that said, I will be buying as many as the WII CLASSIC games as I can, so long as they keep the price worth it - under 10 bucks for must, but even still, most should be under $5.
Now just imagine if TREASURE released their games for the WII, or CAVE/ATLUS.... ah, gaming HEAVEN!

Yeah, I have the TG-16 R-Type, and R-Types on PS1, and the GBC R-Type DX. For a while I thought the TG-16 version was pretty good, but the vertical wobble is really annoying!FraGMarE wrote:Ahhh... the TG16 version of R-Type is nice. Really nice. A good start for Hudson's VC offerings, but let's see a more varied selection of Hudson/Red's back catlog offered to the masses as well (where's Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade?). How about translating and releasing PCE games which never made it here?
I plan on using VC but I have a healthy library of real carts for NES, SNES, Genny and TG-16/PCE so I could use a little more incentive. That said, Iwata also wants devs to make original VC games. IGNWii had a lengthy article about the VC last night which contained a nice thought: this opens up a plethora of possibilities, ie: maybe some new 8-bit sequels to games like Mario, Bonk and Megaman or "lost games" releases? Who knows. It would cost almost zilch to dev these sorts of games. Updates to classic 8 and 16-bit series = instant profit.

R-Type Leo's not being out on any home system to date is a major crime. I'd rather have had the arcade version ported to Wii than the PCE one.D wrote:I hope not.Middlemoor wrote:Cool, but when are they going to stop re-releasing old shooters and start making new ones for the next-gen consoles?

That wobble mode in the PCE R-Type bugs me pretty badly as well.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Based on Nintendo's marketing of Virtual Console, I suspect they are only interested in bringing back retro console ports and not coin-ops.gameoverDude wrote:I'd rather have had the arcade version ported to Wii than the PCE one.

I`ll print that out, frame it, and hang it on my wall, with the Treasure part highlighted. They could rerelease RS for 100 bucks, and people would still buy it. The industry completely forgot to jump on the whole emulation/retro train. I guess no-one at Treasure could have overseen how huge the demand for Radiant Silvergun is. So if people want it, and you don`t give it to them even though they would pay for it, that is sort of either arrogant or stupid.D_Davis wrote:These companies should have been selling and releasing ROMS of their games for last 8 years or so. R-Types is superior in every single respect. Originally R-Type on the PC Engine had to be released in 2 installments because it wouldn't fit on the Hu-card intact.VNAF Ace wrote:I only own R-Types for PS1. How does R-Type for PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 compare to R-Types?

Assuming that this is the US TurboChip release (which contained all 8 levels, placing both HuCards onto one chip), it still begs the question:bloodflowers wrote:R-Types is superior in every single respect. Why are they bothering with either of the card versions anyway? Wouldn't it be cooler to release R-Type Complete CD (especially when Hudson stated that they'd also be doing CD-ROM^2 games on VC)?
