List of best PS4 retro-game releases?

Post by JediMasterThrash »

I'm a huge fan of 16-bit shmups, run'n'gun, platform, beat'm'up, etc.
Back in the not so far back in the day, PS2 was almost the platform with all the compilation releases (Capcom, Metal Slug, Midway SNK, Taito, Atari, etc).

But now I find PS4 with the Retro-bit, Strictly Limited Games, Limited-Run Games, etc, is pumping out a ton of retro games and retro-inspired games.

I'm interested in physical copies, not downloads. just something about having the box on my shelf.

I'd like to fill in a PS4 retro-collection, and was wondering if there's any good lists to go from.

I'm actually most interested in new games in the vein of retro (I mostly have the originals of all original retro games).

For instance, i have Sonic Mania, which might be the greatest platform and sonic game I have ever played. Nails inspired by 16-bit while being so much more at the same time.

I've also picked up some new shooters. Caladrius Blaze and Sine Mora EX I really liked. Caladrius was just a good saturn-era style shooters. While Sine Mora really managed to make something new yet fun out of the shmup genre.

I wasn't so impressed with Raiden V, Darius Burst, or Asterbreed though. I also got Cotton Fantastical Night Dreams but I didn't quite get into it.

I do hear Raiden IV is supposed to be much better and will be getting a port soon. And there's a bunch of other old PC-Engine/NEo/etc games getting PS4 compilations as well.

I saw a review for Dangun Feveron and it looks right up my alley.

I'm just wondering, what are the ones I shouldn't miss? And this includes the whole retro-arcade genra list, not just shmups. But action platform, 1-screen platform, beat'm'up, run'n'gun, puzzle, fighter (2d and 3d). I also like into the screen rail shooters.

Thanks

THE NINJA WARRIORS ONCE AGAIN [PS4/NSW]

Do you like brawlers? AND stage-by-stage time attacks?! This game will last you an eternity. Five radically different characters (you could spend all year mastering one, and remain completely in the dark WRT the other four), a high-finesse combo engine with Natsume's godlike iframe sense, and maddeningly volatile AI. That last bit might be a detriment, if not for the exceptionally tactile grappling and extreme mobility. You're hugely at liberty to manhandle enemies into ideal position for a collective battering, tossing out regular screen-levelling bombs, while superjumping/boosting from one end of the screen to the other. So even the most uncooperative wave is ripe for scruffing.

Do you want to get your teeth knocked the fuck out? Image Image

As a pure survival game, just like its SFC predecessor, it's thoroughly enjoyable but a tad overlong - and also lacking that one's relentless 4:3 pressure. As a high-performance time attack / combo attack, though? It's Sega Rally-tier.

God damn (◎w◎;) He float like a rubber dingheh! (`w´メ)

And hey, even if the woefully random, unhelpful enemies do frustrate you - wouldn't you rather be angry than bored? Image In all seriousness, this is as literal as high-performance grappling gets. Mould the playfield to your liking, then annihilate it.

Get in line bitches (■`w´■)

(a quick system primer, which still lacks Kamaitachi and Raiden because I'm lazy on the former, and never learned the latter - dat rainy day replay value! Image - but it'll get absolute beginners up to speed)

also, the first boss often scurrs newbies, so here's a clue Image)

If this post looks familiar, it's because it's something that needs to be said. I don't spam! I ram and jam ur clam!

Also buy Wild Guns Reloaded and the upcoming new Kiki Kaikai aka Pocky & Rocky with confidence. Natsume haven't just kept their prime SFC form, they've notably improved on it. Little miracles, these games, particualrly with Natsume's abrupt vanishing from the action scene after two generations of increasing excellence!

And since you missed out on the pre-order for it and may not want to pay the inflated eBay prices, grab the Korean version!
