Yeah even if he's done terrible things to others, I'm going out on a limp and assuming it's been a product of him having mental issues as it is.
I'd obviously much rather see a person recover, improve their life, and repent for their past, than end it in such a horribly way. And now said ex, who already has a lot to deal with, will probably also end up feeling "guilt" over a pointless action such as this.
