Shadow the Hedgehog unveiled

Post by LoneSage »

Looks like that poll really was hinting at minigames and stuff...nice find, Thunder Force.

SAN FRANCISCO--The Metreon unveiled its Walk of Game tonight in a ceremony that saw Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog among the 2005 inductees, but the real news is that Sega used the opportunity to unveil a new platform game called Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow is Sonic's nemesis, first appearing on Sonic Adventure 2. The new game appears to be a Sonic-style adventure with some bold new twists.

The short clip showed off a variety of gameplay from the upcoming platformer that featured familiar Sonic mechanics along with some new additions to the time-tested formula. Among the segments showing Shadow's rail sliding, homing jump, and speed burst abilities, it was hard to miss Shadow packing some heat. Yes, the dark hedgehog rolls strapped with a pistol of some kind, and he appears to have no qualms about using to take out fools in his way.

The environments shown appear to be in the same tribal vein from Sonic's recent console adventures, although as evidenced by the text interspersed among the gameplay, Shadow will be taking players on a tear through the darker side of Sonic's universe. The graphics in the game appear to be along the same lines as those seen in Sonic Heroes.

Although no platforms were given for the game's release, PlayStation 2 and GameCube releases seem like a given, taking into account the Sonic series' past history. The game is scheduled to be released this fall. Expect to see some official details on the game in May at E3 2005, if not sooner.

Wow, nice! :o

I definitely thought "Shadow The Hedgehog" was one of the best concepts proposed by that poll

I'm keeping an open mind about this game

It looks like it's using the same engine as Sonic Heroes, which was absolutely pathetic.

Hopefully at least this won't have hyper-twitchy controls combined with glitchy hit detection.

Yay. More childish cutscenes. Hurrah. Sarcasm. Sonic peaked in sweet 16 bits.

Well, it seems fitting to try to milk Shadow. When Sonic came out, that's how you made a character with attitude. All you needed was a neon-colored animal. These days, the 'tude comes from the anti-heroes. So you put Shadow in some darker environments, you give him a pistol, bam, everyone loves it.

It might not suck. I'm skeptical, but I'll keep an open mind.

I have to wonder about the gun playmechanic...

Could this be an inclusion by what was UGA (an attempt at merging Rez with Sonic)?

Looks good to me. As long as they focus almost exclusive on him then it might be a winner. I loved playing as Shadow in SA2. Still haven't played Heroes yet.

Long story short, Sega somehow managed to ruin the speed stages from the Adventure games.

It looks like a half-assed effort to me.

Was the gun thrown in simply because Shadow won the poll? What if Tails won the poll, what would they throw in then?

A giant mech and a retarded lock-on system more than likely.

I think the poll was just to show how much people were interested in some of those ideas. I doubt Sega of America threw this game together after only a few days after the poll, since SOJapan are the ones developing it.

Seeing as he has a gun. They should make a 2D Snatcher style game with Shadow as a maverick cop, who plays by his own rules.

That would rock my world.

Well...................................

At first, I said, "OMG, TEHY AR KILING TEH SONICK STORIEE!!!" but, when I thought about it, they decided, "Hey, let's give the people what they want, with polls to back up our decision."

So I can't complain... I mean, it's not like I was ever any good at even the first Sonic games for this to worry me :P

I hope that someday Mario and Luigi stage an intervention with Sonic.

Pssh, I've seen that video and this game looks a LOT more fun then either Super Mario Sunshine or Luigi's Mansion. The gun does not appear to be a dumb gimmick.

In fact, IMO, Shadow the Hedgehog looks like Sonic Adventure mixed with a 3rd person shooter, and if that's the case, count me in.
