wht11: The bottom line is that governance in China, traditionally, has been about keeping the masses well-fed enough not to riot, since the population is bigger and thus angry mobs have higher chances to overthrow whoever is in charge. There is a long tradition of benevolent but authoritarian governance that has its roots in Legalism/dhozism, so certainly some policy makers work with a goal of getting good results for everyone. Beyond these highly subjective impressions from someone who still speaks a poor Mandarin (in my defense, it would be my 8th language, at 41 years of age), I am afraid that I should offer you proper references on the topic, and I admit being too lazy about it

indeed healthy dose of wanting government control and we've seen it on here from people of all political leanings, interestingly.

It is one expression of socially "conservative" (not "right") politics, as opposed to socially "libertarian" (not "left") politics.FinalBaton wrote:indeed healthy dose of wanting government control and we've seen it on here from people of all political leanings, interestingly.
There are plenty of online tests that measure individuals' politic leanings on a bi-dimensional chart, and can give you the brief introduction to these rather political matters.
A modicum of basic knowledge of global history will also tell you that most governments in most countries are definitely socially conservative, since they are devised to keep the population in check (well-fed and healthy or not).
A modicum of basic knowledge in current affairs around the world will also tell you that, if left unchecked, uneducated and un-fed, people tend to believe into completely outlandish things (say, the so-pol!) and act in rather irrational ways.
Welcome to humankind: a few books could be informative, on the matter.

AKSHUALLY. If you want to stay in the left right thing (wich I didn't want to do) : government control is on a second, north-south axis and is independant of left-right. And the different political leanings nomenclatures are placed on that grid accordingly. As I've expressed in my post you quoted.Randorama wrote:It is one expression of socially "conservative" (not "right") politics, as opposed to socially "libertarian" (not "left") politics.FinalBaton wrote:indeed healthy dose of wanting government control and we've seen it on here from people of all political leanings, interestingly.

Still, considering we covered: checked, educated and fed, from what point begins the relevance of political views without making it purely academic? Past the 3 mentioned conditions we could go into keeping the citizens both entertained enough as well as motivated enough to contribute. At which point can we assure ourselves to speak openly and expect a reasonable response to basic matters? Or conversely, why can't a society be kept at a minimum level of honesty and remain healthy?FinalBaton wrote:AKSHUALLY. Re: COVID-19 in your part of the world
I'll allow myself to go with the covid story, at 1st rapid shot I took as the easiest target, trying to get some attention for the questions I actually came here to ask (about the bugs in games, at least fixing one for bringing two guides)*. The key release was rather played in such that on such a forum I literally expected everyone to be well aware, it was merely a question if it can spoken about openly.
I had in mind to go on that with more obvious matters. With the above posted any society has resource limit, none are unlimited for any given time. With that over the years it was mentioned many times in various moods, nature/environment protection, energy sources, limited wastes, slowing a bit down in general. I don't go out much but somehow I feel simply saying it to people wasn't quite enough to slow the shit down.
In this light we see the covid idea is in fact utmost clever. However, the page I presented as a bit "dubious" doesn't always bring just as a fact what it is, a script, instead they seem to unnecessarily play on moods on that. I did mention that already but I do not recommend taking whatever there straight up, at times it felt to me like fighting fire with fire without a good reason.
So the real question is, why can't people simply understand the social matters at hand and there is need to coming up with fiction to make them behave reasonably?

FB: No, no need to bother or get stuck with axes, but as you were mentioning, lots of people would stay in the "control" quadrant, whence my comment...
...but have a nice day from the hubris-rich So-Pol police, or whatever you called it (in case you were wondering "where from?", and the point was not clear).
Maybe you prefer to read the posts of a number of people who, poor lads, were banned for being baited into defending the NSDAP, white supremacy and so on (the poor lads!).
BulletMagnet made the point a few posts ago, anyway.
Please feel free to ignore whatever you want ignore, I will reciprocate as per your wishes (except maybe for the music threads, you never know...).
wht11: my 2 cents on "why can't people simply understand (a lot of things)?" and "At which point...a reasonable response...?"
There are tons of different reasons, and I think that you just read more on these topics to get an idea that is perhaps more satisfying.
At some point, good answers have an academic bent because, well, some people are paid to study political, social and psychological matters, have quite a lot of money to collect data and pay research assistants to analyse them, and end up writing books and papers presenting the results. Hardly perfect answers to most questions, but at least there are attempts.
Alternatively you can watch videos on youtube of the "Booyah!" type, of course, but you can guess my opinion on that stuff, which of course you can ignore.
Myself, I like reading, anyway.

It is, in part, because reality sucks and many people don't want to face it. This is how you end up hooking people into things like Qanon, they are looking for an escape.

Re: COVID-19 in your part of the world
I recently attended my second Zoom funeral.
The first one was earlier this year and was the son of a close family friend. It made sense that I didn't go, but I probably would have if not for Covid. The second one was my Uncle, who I was reasonably close to and it was close to where I live.
I have to say that I don't like Zoom funerals. It felt more like watching a sad TV show than anything else, and I feel that I didn't properly get to say goodbye to my Uncle.
I guess it's partially my Cousin's who didn't seem to want many people there, but all of us are vaccinated and they had no reason not to. I think they just didn't want the trouble of a big group, and they used Covid as an excuse to limit things.

Yeah, we've more or less postponed my aunt's 'funeral' until later this summer when we'll finally actually get together. Too bad for you; like you I don't like virtual anything, socially speaking, unless it's arguing about shump online and/or lurking this/the Trump thread for more insanity.

Apartheid for the people, but universal socialist redistribution for the muffins :
These segregationists who have infiltrated positions of power in the workplace will stop at nothing to marginalize the anti-vaxx baked goods community.

So, if I eat a muffin and tell you I was vaccinated the entire time after I eat it, do I have to return it after it comes back out?
We apologise for the inconvenience

Finally got my first jab, at my the stadium of my local football team (Burton Albion). About 6 weeks late because I don't drive and needed to do it in my own town, but better late than never. In and out in 5 minutes, arm isn't sore (yet).

ROFLMAO!
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

For anyone out there looking to stay healthy (and keep the family pocketbook healthy too!), here's a useful home made hydroxychloroquine recipe to help keep you and your loved ones safe in these trying times:

All that work then at the very bottom, "or just chew the damn bark and get the exact same benefits."

I've discovered two of my coworkers (who fortunately work in a distant enough department that I have minimal contact with them) are antivaxxers and haven't even gotten their first shot. Extremely annoying.

I do appreciate the fact that he specifically instructs to seek out other disaffected loners. Though doesn't that kind of kill the whole point?
But yeah, just goes to show that there's obviously no good reason for people in positions of authority who know better to, you know, push back on any of this stuff as long as it keeps their base riled up; I mean, everyone has a Right To Their Opinions. And seriously, what's the worst that could happen (I mean besides the virus continuing to proliferate and mutate and be impossible to get completely under control, that doesn't count, cheaters)? Well, whatever it is, I'm sure that Nobody Could Have Possibly Seen It Coming. Though it will ultimately be the fault of those Elitist doctors and others who encouraged people to inoculate and were thus Divisive and Pretty Much Had It Coming.
