I can't figure out why this V8 juice costs $300. And it says 56 have been sold...

^ any time a bunch of something has been sold, check the auction history
https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI. ... 7675.l8422
this person's feedback indicates it sold for $12, previously. mark-up on listings with numerous items is often used to make buyers think what they're going for is at a good price if everyone else is paying that much.
this instance is definitely funny, though, and makes me wonder given the amount of stuff the seller has up for sale if it's adjusted by a bot based on some sort of algorithm? like, once the stock gets low, maybe it auto-adjusts the price to something absurd? perhaps this is done when sellers want to capitalize on a sudden surge in demand for something they have, and once the price is inflated, they'll come back and do a manual readjustment?
it's kind of a mystery, but that's my best guess. i see things like this relatively often and get to hypothesizing.

Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
It's usually done to discourage anyone from buying for a certain length of time so the seller can restock/secure supply. I once asked some dude why he decided to jack the price up on his last thingamabob by 1200% (genuinely wondering if there was a sudden global shortage or extreme demand) and he said it was just so the listing wasn't terminated prematurely from running out. If someone actually does want to pay $300 for a bottle of V8, it's obviously worth someone's time to head down to the local grocery store until then.
Not the most sensible explanation but that's what I was told.

That's exactly why I've done it in the past.Bratwurst wrote:It's usually done to discourage anyone from buying for a certain length of time so the seller can restock/secure supply.
One instance was that I was using them as placeholders. I had like 50 free listings for the month and I didn't have photos and stuff ready to use them all, so instead of letting them expire I made a bunch of near duplicate 30 day listings with ridiculous prices and then updated them when I had the time.
Presently I have one item listed at a relatively high price because it is the only example available and I really wouldn't mind keeping it.

Super-useful, one-of-a-kind gameboy attachment at bargain price here - grab it while you can! Just one day left
Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
That auction makes me uncomfortable. The description in this one has some subtle yet vague undertones that makes the whole thing seem really shady; especially that last sentence.

Japanese engrish is best engrish.
Keep it in the dark! After all, the description is shady enough

Original Gradius arcade PCB for 1.7 million Japanese Yen:

I guess the non-Bubble System version of Gradius is pretty rare

I know it's been a while since the last post in this thread, but I just had to share this:

Bad motherboard, no RAM, no hard drive, damaged DC jack. 550 bucks gets me a chassis, keyboard, battery and screen, then?

Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
Who the fuck would be desperate enough for parts that they'd pay over $500 for what is essentially a laptop-shaped paperweight? At that price you might as well invest your cash in a new machine!
Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
Gotta love this "Mostly working" PS4. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Sony-PlayStatio ... 3752221334
Listings like this should be "For parts or repair" only, yet this clownshow is trying to sell it for typical used, working prices and pass it off with this stellar description. "The disk drive is damaged it will only work once in a while but other than that it works perfectly fine."
I guess it's the world's first "Mostly digital only" PS4.
Edit: He lowered the price by $100 CDN. It's still a shady mis-listed piece of junk.

Got another eBay masterpiece over here. This guy apparently bought a small form factor PC, ripped the DVD drive out, shoved in a GT 1030, and is trying to pass it off as a "Gaming computer". With a starting bid of $140 USD. Not surprisingly, it ended with zero bids.
Photos are quite spectacular, too. Showcasing WoW Classic, Minecraft, and LoL, probably the only games you could actually play on this shitheap.

Nintendo Signboard & SUPER MARIO Figure
Made of pure gold I guess.. bargain!
Zombie Hunter brown version
A black part of a usual zombie Hunter becomes brown! Worth it for sure..
Yoshi's island poster
I was actually watching this one.. before it shot up to empty Cave cardboards levels...
Luckily you do stumble upon j̶o̶k̶e̶ serious listings like this from time to time.. and ebay makes sense again..

Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
.. aaaand if you thought 400 bucks for a SNES poster was nuts, what about this new sealed Pocky and Rocky 2?
Whoever bought it for its original price got some pretty nice return.
In fact, assuming that the sticker is real (who was still selling SNES games in 2001?), it turns out buying a bunch of Pocky and Rocky 2's in 2001 would have been a better investment than buying Amazon or Apple shares:
AMZN
Feb 1, 2001: $10,19 Today: $3158 Return: 30891%
AAPL
Feb 1, 2001: $0,35 Today: $123,75 Return: 35257%
New Pocky and Rocky 2:
Feb 21, 2001: $20 Today: $10.177 Return: 50785%
2001 people investing in dotcoms got it all wrong

I really hope someone has made a high quality reproduction box, done a rancid shit into it and shrink wrapped it.

Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
Should have done this last weekend, my Friday night is going to be spent posting ebay listings. I think it's time to dump the Gamecube and DS collections. And maybe my Super Cassette Vision and Wonderswan stuff in pricey lots! I wouldn't care if it didn't sell, but heads ain't going to find this stuff anywhere else!Steamflogger Boss wrote:Things gonna get wild with this stimulus hitting.

Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/03/business ... index.html
After being forgotten in a desk drawer for almost 35 years, a sealed copy of the Nintendo video game Super Mario Bros. sold at auction on Friday for a whopping $660,000.
the NES cartridge was purchased as a Christmas gift in 1986, and was untouched until the seller found it earlier this year.
$660,000 for an incredibly ubiquitous game simply because it's shrinkwrapped. Stupid. It is also one of the earliest copies of the game to be shrink wrapped instead of having a sticker seal, according to the auction company.
This particular version of the game first went on sale in 1986, but Nintendo changed the packaging in early 1987, so only a relatively small number were sold.
Re: ebay (and other) auctions with insane prices
Worth it. That video game is gonna look super sick sitting on a shelf.
