decent 4:3 10-12" LCD monitor for MAME cab?
So I'm still working on a mini Donkey Kong bartop arcade cab that is supposed to emulate all the classics up to '84. I've been meaning to use a 16:9 LCD monitor I've had lying around, but I've changed my mind and now I want a decent 10 to 12"-ish 4:3 LCD monitor. Does anyone herehave any recommendations? There's some stuff available, but I have no idea if they're worth anything... I'd prefer an IPS screen of course. CHeers fellas!

Here's a 19" SuzoHapp arcade LCD monitor that accepts both 15.7kHz & 31kHz sync rates but would be more suited towards an upright or cocktail table styled cabinet setup:

I've seen some arcade operators use this type of lcd monitor with the Namco Anniversary compliation jamma pcb (the one that has a bunch of classic Namco arcade game titles to choose from & is coined up with real quarters or tokens).
You'd then would need an external scanline generator (SLG) device to add the required "scanlines" for completeness. Toodles' SLG works just fine with a 640 x 480 resolution setting to enable the scanline filter indeed. They're listed for sale on eBay under "Vga SLG".
You could use a 9" Sony CRT RGB monitor like the Sony CPD-9000 with it's dedicated 15.7kHz sync rate + the obligatory scanlines are included as well. Much better than going with an lcd monitor setup if you want that classic retro crt monitor aesthetic vibe.

The ratio of the resolution width/height should be the same as the ratio of the physical dimensions; I'm not aware of any modern monitors that don't have square pixels.ChurchOfSolipsism wrote:So I'm still working on a mini Donkey Kong bartop arcade cab that is supposed to emulate all the classics up to '84. When I had to answer the same question for myself, I wrote up a quick spreadsheet for the math. It shows your 20" monitor to have a height of 12 inches. For 1920x1200 I get 11.7" height for a 22" monitor, and 12.7" height for a 24" monitor.

First of all, many thanks for the advice - no idea how I could have missed your post!PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Here's a 19" SuzoHapp arcade LCD monitor that accepts both 15.7kHz & 31kHz sync rates but would be more suited towards an upright or cocktail table styled cabinet setup:

Well, problem with CRTs is of course their humongous size; I already built the shell, so I can use a flatscreen only. (CRTs and bartops don't mix well, since the CRTs were oriented in a way that the monitor points almost to the top of the cab. No way you can put one in a bartop this way.) I have another scanline generator lying around I can use for this build.
The Suzo Happ screen looks good, but honestly it costs far more than I'm willing to spend. I was hoping I could get a screen for under/ around a hundred bucks tops...

Oh don't worry, I'm a decently skilled cab builder and have exquisite taste in cabs. When it's finished, it will roughly look like this:

Okay, that's definitely forgivable.
Just make sure the scanlines are on.

Pfff, who do you think you're talking to? Implying that I would play without scanlines... hrm...GaijinPunch wrote:Okay, that's definitely forgivable.

Longterm goal would be to put in a powerful enough PC for HLSL. Even as the CRT purists that we undoubtedly are, we cannot deny that it makes for a rather authentic experience.

If you're still looking, there are a number of 4:3 monitors on Amazon from brands like EYOYO, Cocar, and "Thinlerain." China wildin'. They are mostly low-rez VGA panels. Just type in "4:3 LCD" and you're good to go. Most in the sub-$200 range and some are hovering around $!00. Seems the pandemic hasn't helped pricing though.
12" Eyoyo, $109:

Don't expect miracles, though. Adrian's Digital Basement has a review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CluzXuInAqU

Thanks, man. Unfortunately it looks like they're TFT, I was looking for an IPS screen due to their much better viewing angle. Still, at that price I'm tempted, it's only a third of what Suzo Happ screen would cost...
