Vulcano - A Turrican shmup *WIP*

Post by TrevorMcFurr »

Hi all, over the last 6 months or so I've been working on a hori shmup called 'Vulcano', using the assets from the Amiga versions of Turrican 1&2.

Image

It's something I've always wanted to do and is based on the 3 shmup stages from Turrican 2, but expanding it to a full game.

Here's a video of the first stage:
https://youtu.be/4imM3WuJuIw

I've made a few changes to the original gameplay however;

- How some of the weapons work
- Added a couple of new primary weapons ('Twin' & homing 'Powerline')
- Added 4 support weapons (Homing Missiles, Rocket, Grenade, Twin bombs)
- Reduced overall pace
- Player health (you can only take 4 hits now instead of the original health bar)
- Added my own backgrounds
And more...

Have a look and share your thoughts!

Cheers

Seems like a solid game! (And it reminds me a lot of good Amiga memories)

What game engine did you use?

Thanks very much suny!

Yes, it's my intention for it to be a mixture of the Amiga style and some of the classic horizontal shoot 'em ups, such as the Gradius and R-Type games.

I'm using Clickteam Fusion for the engine. I've been using it on and off since the days of The Games Factory through to Multimedia Fusion.

Very cool!

Some things I like:
  • - Charge shot speed, sfx, and the fact that it cuts through enemies makes it seem powerful and satisfying to use
  • - Love how you co-opted the Turrican screen wipe attack at 4:42
  • - Large enemy destruction as it slowly falls off screen is nice

Some things I might change:
  • - Enemies spawning behind you without a telegraph at 1:32
  • - Make boss health bar longer and have it fill before fight rather than start fully filled at 4:17
Keep up the great work, excited to see more!

Thanks for the feedback DyingIsFun, I may include some warnings for dangerous enemies that spawn behind the player, although as a few of the weapons are capable of firing behind, and the generally slower pace it may not be essential.

Here are some new screens of the different stages that I've finished or almost finished:

I like the look of this game (and am a fan of horis)! Is this only coming out for the Amiga, or do you have plans for cross-platform porting?

Thanks o.pwuaioc, it's being made in Clickteam Fusion, so it's for Windows PCs currently.

Wow this is looking epic. Nice to see some horizontal gameplay. How many levels are you going for.

Thanks Ark!

The plan is to create as many levels as the first 2 Turrican games (based on the number of songs available), so around 20. Obviously that is far too many for a shmup, especially as some levels can run over the 5 minute mark. So I'll either implement some sort of branching/level select or split the game in to 2 parts, with part 1 being based on Turrican, and part 2 on Turrican 2.

Hi Nachtklavier, I'm still working on Vulcano, as well as my original shooter, d_resolution: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=60366
Unfortunately I can't work on them as quickly as I'd like due to family commitments etc! There aren't enough hours in the day ☹
