Not the fact that it got approved, just that they had it streamlined to even be this quick. Surely you've dealt with government offices before. Sure it's not splitting the atom but government offices aren't really best at making haste.vol.2 wrote:Well, the "white house" did threaten to fired the head of the FDA if it wasn't approved. It's not a zoning permit. When it's time to blow something up or give themselves a raise, things go quite smoothly. Congress was hasty getting a bill to (lame duck) Dubuyah's desk when the bank crisis unfolded--as well.GaijinPunch wrote:Not the fact that it got approved, just that they had it streamlined to even be this quick. Re: COVID-19 in your part of the world
And have been rightly criticized for not allowing enough time for study or public comment in such cases, and in turn not having things turn out as promised (and those were cases where the public wasn't nearly as leery of the overall situation as they are now, and specific follow-up action from them was not required); not too terribly long ago I noted in this same thread that it's estimated that around 95 percent of the post-Great Recession recovery went to the wealthiest 1 percent of the population. You're well within your rights to criticize Congress for having misplaced priorities, but completely undermine yourself when your proposed "solution" is to make everything as rushed and slapdash as the things they currently prioritize.orange808 wrote:When it's time to blow something up or give themselves a raise, things go quite smoothly.
You've repeatedly suggested that approving a vaccine for widespread use is somehow "not that big a deal"; as I mentioned a post or two ago I'm not an expert on the ins and outs of the process, nor what issues might still need ironing out at this stage and what the possible consequences might be. Judging by your confidence in this area, might you happen to have a link or two with which I might educate myself on the matter?

Putting words in my mouth now? I said the US dragged its feet on an inevitable result. Was any new science done in the period America waited? I don't know of any. You got a link for that?BulletMagnet wrote:And have been rightly criticized for not allowing enough time for study or public comment in such cases, and in turn not having things turn out as promised (and those were cases where the public wasn't nearly as leery of the overall situation as they are now, and specific follow-up action from them was not required); not too terribly long ago I noted in this same thread that it's estimated that around 95 percent of the post-Great Recession recovery went to the wealthiest 1 percent of the population. I will gladly leave you some general links on the vaccine. If you need sourced peer reviewed scholarly papers, you'll need to source those (and wade through them yourself). Although, I suspect you're trolling. Any educated person that attended university should have taken a biology course.
We went through stages of human trials already, if you were paying attention. People didn't keel over dead. Worried about allergies and all the poor chickens? That's a common issue with vaccines. Nothing new, though--and (also) not a big issue here.

Same general guidance that we expected throughout the process.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/11/heal ... rgies.html
Effectiveness was a primary concern, but does it really matter? Even an underperformer at 75% effectiveness would drastically reduce the fatality numbers for COVID-19 related deaths (usually accompanied by other major health/immune problems). Mutation related issues related to manufacturing or the virus in the wild could cause people to get sick, but the existence of similar antibodies should help people recover faster. That happens because your body has a process that (essentially) captures living viruses and hauls them in for testing. Existing stored antibodies are matched and/or modified to fit the attacker. Closer existing candidates allow your body to build a working prototype faster.

Re: COVID-19 in your part of the world
Okay, let's see here -
- I looked over the links you provided, which covered, in the order you posted them, 1) How the vaccine is made and how it works; 2) Something regarding concerns over allergic reactions, I assume (couldn't read because of paywall); and 3) A comparison of antibodies that develop in response to a few different viral diseases. None of these, you'll note, so much as touches on what I actually challenged from your previous post, namely the notion that the approval process for the vaccine was unnecessary and wouldn't have much benefit even as the public airs concerns over the vaccine's efficacy and safety due to the expedited nature of the process (and that anyone insisting on it was dooming people to die for their own vanity).
As such, I attempted on my own to find some attempt at a cost/benefit analysis of skipping the approval process and getting the vaccine out faster versus letting it play out to assure the public that it shouldn't hesitate to have treatment administered; so far, at least, I haven't found one, perhaps nobody's bothered to attempt it. What I did encounter along the way, however, are summaries like this one of how the vaccine was brought to market so fast, which primarily credit 1) Previous work done on past coronavirus varieties, which researchers could build upon, and 2) More to the issue at hand, how willing officials were to bypass red tape to speed things along - note the segment of the linked article where the FDA reduced the "expedited" application process from six months to three weeks.
At the very least, this record of events would appear to undermine your assertion that one small, late part of the overarching process not going fast enough for your liking proves that the people in charge don't much care if people die as long as they can telecommute, or whatever the hell your premise is.
On that note, concerning your characterization of my query:

So much for solidarity with the working man, it seems; of course, if anyone other than you on here had made a statement like that, I don't think the forum supports a text size large enough to convey the spittle-laced howls of "comfortable elitism" that would have erupted forth from your keyboard. To the point that anyone who would deign to request supporting information for your assertions about vaccine approval processes - which, apparently, are entry-tier Biology 101 material these days? - must be trolling you, no less.Any educated person that attended university should have taken a biology course.
Re: COVID-19 in your part of the world
You do enjoy putting words in my mouth. The EU is an even worse offender now, by the way. Delaying the inevitable is silly. I'm sure you'll find another way to make up more imaginary straw men and (oh so bravely!) slay them.
And, most everywhere I have been recently, you still need a degree from university and/or professional certs to get any kind of job (save working at a warehouse store).
Doesn't really matter, because I'm talking to you--and I have few doubts you attended university. There's also the fact that: your initial request for vaccine information you already knew was condescension by definition.
Sure. I support people that haven't had my good fortune. My language is fairly subdued compared to bullshit like "deplorables" and "flyover states". Those terms make it clear; the elitists that use them give absolutely zero fucks.

OMFG I just saw my auntie's house on te news! Some dumb kid tried to skip quarantine while visiting the Cayman Islands. Now she and her BF are banged up in prison for four months. Those non-halal motherfuckers don't play around w/ coof! Mooted visiting family there this year, but the thought of another plastic dick up my nose, and two weeks in some shitty hotel, and a chunk of my extended kin keeling over on contact after, and then a WOODEN dick rammed up mein arschole by surviving cousins caused me to say fuck it.
I just cannot believe a YANKEE SHE-DOG was trying to KILL MUH FAMRY She cute tbh, would hammer and cure her coof with my coof-killing cock. THEN DEPORT IMMEDIATELY
Meanwhile in Tinkletowne, GrimUpNorthfordshire, you would not believe how little of a fuck people seem to give. Feel like a prat walking around with me coof mask on while auld cunts are shambling right under me nose in te local POUNDSHAVER. Whatever, I'm outta here in a few. According to me auntie, yep. She at the lady's, he at the men's. They're pretty nice facilities at least. Had to write a dissertation on 'em as a wee lad (compared to some of the ones next door in my yard, they're fuckin Xanadu >_>). London Dungeon they ain't, fortunately for our intrepid, potentially outbreak-delivering duo! Only corpses here are clean, boy!vol.2 wrote:getthefuckoutofhere! Brutal fines too apparently. "If yuh can't hear yuh gon feel" is basically the motto of the West Indies when it comes to crime and punishment. Violent World as ol' Danny boy might put it.

We have a place around here called "Dollar General." I think they used to have a mascot who was a general that carried off the bad joke, but they dropped it decades ago because I guess they don't have a marketing budget anymore. Sokay I suppose, but I haven't been in one since they had a general.
If you ever get the chance to visit Japan, I would highly recommend going to dollar stores there. (100 yen shops) There's a lot of neato stuff in them.

Well looks like the uk is screwed!I reckon all of us in the uk are gonna contract covid sooner or later, estimates are that 1 in 50 are infected and expected to rise over the next month.it’s concerning to say the least.just gotta hope most will overcome the illness.I know a few who have had it and it just seems so random how people react,I know a gal in her 20s fitness freak who can’t walk up stairs, then a fat 60 yr old who had 2 heart attacks who didn’t even get any symptoms, intresting is couples where one tests positive and the other dosent??how can you not contract it when you are sharing a bed? This time it feels different than last March when entered first lockdown, there’s a definite sense of fear.

It is true, of every member of this forum, I'm the last that the coof will drop. Chumps like me never get an easy exit, it's the poor pricks with something to offer that fickle fate is drawn to.
I'm continually struck by how little of a shit people seem to give here oop nawf. Had a nice chap around to give an estimate on a garage door, licking his fingers like an uncouth bastard while showing me his brochure (sounds like the premise to some Gay Northern Porno donnit? ). And I'm standing there like an asshole in full HAZMAT gear.
Chucked the brochure in the trash afterward, not because of coof but because that shit is fucking rank and I wasn't impressed by his prices anyway.

In addition, vaccines aren't being produced fast enough (no surprise there). Thankfully the vaccine does protect from the new variants.
And Ontario is about to go into ultra super lockdown mode. lol

here the hopeful vaccine rate is 250 000 per week which means 8 months to reach 8 millions (and 4 months to reach 4 millions which is half our population). but it's not going as fast as they hope. plus there'll be vaccine shortages here and there for sure

Re: COVID-19 in your part of the world
I tested positive on the 2nd of this month and if all goes well I will be free to leave isolation (read: my tiny ass bedroom) on the 11th. I was supposed to move into a new place on the 16th as well, so this past week has obliterated my "pack everything" plans. My older brother tested positive on the 30th, and I had hung out with him a few days prior, so I assume I caught it from him since I didn't really go anywhere after that for the holidays.
What a way to start the new year out.
I've been mostly fine; I have a persistent cough and the strangest symptom for sure is losing smell/taste, which has never happened to me before. My brother just ended his quarantine but hasn't totally gotten his taste back; I am hoping mine comes back sooner rather than later (i can taste sugar and salt, that's about it). Luckily no fever or harder symptoms. It's just boring, dull, and lonely being cooped up in a tiny room, though I know the reasons for it.
Once the both of us get our taste back, we're going out to a restaurant. 90 days functional immunity; time to cash it in. There's an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse just outside of Chicago that's pretty nice...
