Eh, could be worse. ACA R-Type I & II vanished without a trace, now that sucks. Even then, there's arcade-perfect Image Fight and X-Multiply to brush up on. Those 2-ALLs will keep you busy, spring will be here before you know it. Image

Oh, did they really have R-Type 1 and 2 on ACA at some point? I was really hoping we'd see some hamster ports down the line. R-Type Dimensions is all right - just as barebones (instead of one save state, it has stage select) - but R-Type 2 on that release is the World rom, and not the Japanese version, and there's no way to change! Still not terrible, but an odd choice that I chalk up to Eurodev inexperience. The world version of R-Type 1 is identical to my knowledge; but the World ver. of R-Type 2 is noticeably easier. Still brutal! But not quite as much so.

Also a bit of a bummer that the two games don't have the traditional game over/continue screens and instead fade to black. You miss that little extra bit of ambience

I expected a delay to 2021; I just hope the backer demo comes out some time very soon by the time TGS rolls around.

I must confess I'm going off vague recollection  but yeah, it seems Hamster had announced 'em at some point, before they quietly dropped off the radar. Shame, I'd snap 'em up in a heartbeat.

Having said that, with R-Types providing an excellent stopgap, I hope they finish off the rest of the M72 library (Dragon Breed, Tonma, Gen-San). Image Fight and Saigo no Nindou were my #1 wants so again, can't complain too much there! UNLIKE SOMEONE WE KNOW Image

Dragon Breed would be killer, one I always wanted to spend more time with. Also Mr Heli, only really played that on PCE but loved it.

New trailer!

The focus on ship selection is interesting, since I seem to recall Kujo saying that Final's extensive hangar would be de-emphasised here in favour of a smaller selection of carefully balanced ships, a bit like in III or Delta. Maybe they decided "fuck it, could be the last one, let's go berserk again". The gameplay clips look great, but I really hope to see more physical/environmental dangers to contend with in the stages as the project progresses - Delta and Final did away with contact damage for walls, but they didn't throw out bottlenecking and gauntlets to be negotiated, etc. These are R-Type's bread and butter!

I have nothing but love for Dragon Breed (own the PCB) and Mr.Heli (own the PCE version).
Mr.Heli is slightly more forgiving in Normal mode on PCE, which was a welcome addition since the arcade version destroys you for the smallest possible mistakes you can do. Just fart at the wrong time and it will kill you, your children and your grandchildren for three generations to come. Then it inverts the entropy just to work it's way back to you just to kill you again. So yes, PCE version on normal mode is better way to get into that one.

Irem really made an effort with their HuCard ports, all of 'em are worth doubling up on imo. Even the savagely unfriendly Image Fight, which is to vertical terrain 'em ups what Kyuukyoku Tiger MD is to Toaplanesque snipefests, a 4:3 crash-zoom straight through the canopy.

That voice acting is PAINFUL, the trailer would be better without it. I like the way the aesthetics are shaping up, though.

R-Type Final had some good ideas, but not so good execution. This is the sort of sequel that could be really special if they nail the gameplay this time. The trailers all seem promising.

I hope it turns out good. I have to wait awhile before I can play R-Type Delta on real hardware again. I have the disc, but it's currently in storage, along with my JP PS1.

I'm definitely excited for R-Type Final 2 because it looks so promising. The ships look so gorgeous, and the gameplay looks just as good as the old R-Type series. The voice acting is unnecessary though. I like the original R-Type Final, but my main problem of that game is that the ship selection is way too unbalanced. R-9Ø Ragnarok II is especially broken, it has the Giga Wave Cannon that can wipe out bosses in no time. The gameplay is fine, albeit it is very slow-paced. I hope R-Type Final 2 will be more balanced with the ship selections.

It's interesting to see so many different opinions.

I loved Final... such an odd game, but full of heart.

Final2 looks soulless to me, for some reason I can't quite explain.
Delta was the most "vital" and "alive" feeling of the series. Even though it was slow-moving, it was very dynamic visually.
Final lost a lot of that dynamism, but still kept the feeling of movement with a few weird camera angles and transition sequences.
I'm hoping Final2 keeps that stuff at least at the level of Final, because what I've seen so far just looks so bland and boring it doesn't excite me at all.

Sell your JP PS1 and buy a JP PS2. I play my JP R-Type Delta on my JP PS2 with component video cable on CRT TV and the image is much better than on the PS1 (without video component, only RCA or S-Video). The same occurs with DoDonPachi, Einhander and other PS1 shmups.

PS2 BC has some prominent issues with arcade conversions - Toaplan Shooting Battle and Gradius Deluxe Pack are broken, as is Namco Museum Encore's Rolling Thunder, and Gradius Gaiden's seventh stage (black hole/On The Event Horizon) runs at half-speed. Delta's alright besides its garbled options menu, IIRC, but a JP PS1's still a good tool to have around.

Granted, the upcoming M2 Kyuukyoku Tiger will almost certainly obsolete Shooting Battle, as Arcade Archives' Gradius & Gradius II already did with the Deluxe Pack. Still, for diehard conversion/port geeks (like me!) who like to check out version differences, the same advice applies.

Besides, this is the first time I've ever heard any talk about PS2 outputting a better video signal than PS1. Is there any truth to that? PS1 looks sharp as fuck on my PVM even with my super cheap discount RGB cable.

I don't know where Kobayashi is from, but here in the USA RGB was never widely available, so the best most people would get on a PS1 is either composite or S-Video.
