What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

I wonder if Origami King is gonna be one of those games that'll pick up traction after some years when people start to look back on them. Or if it's already doomed to rot in the same "meh" pile as Sticker Star and Color Splash.
The latter wouldn't be fair.

I'm getting my walking-sim fix right now from the English release of Moon. The game strikes as pretty whimsical and funny at the moment, with charming dialog and unique character design. You can definitely see a through-line from this game to Chulip (almost the exact same structure), to even Brave Hero Yamada (and of course, their shmup Black Bird - at least in character design).

I suspect there will be a lot of aimless wandering, but at least I am early enough in the game right now so as to make everywhere I go a new objective completed or monster saved. Moon has a strange mix of being really laid-back while maintaining a pretty pressing schedule and in-game clock, especially as NPCs and monsters have their daily (and sometimes weekly!) schedules. I imagine that this daily-planner-esque gameplay loop will be a pain as I have to wait for things to happen. Early on you will likely die before you do much of anything as your stamina is so low. It took a few tries to figure out how to survive the first in-game day.

All told though, the game's easy-going nature and quirkiness is moving me along at this stage. If you liked any of the other love-de-lic games (like Chulip, or their antecedents like Contact, Brave Hero Yamada etc.), you'll likely enjoy this one.

To the above: i haven't really given the paper mario series a shake since Super Paper Mario, which might have burned me out of the series. I had some hopes for this new game, but I don't have the energy to start a big game like that atm.

Sure, the nintendo store link is here.

You can watch the trailer for it here too.

It should be under the new releases, not too far off in the eshop. Also called Moon: Remix RPG Adventure

As fate would have it I'm actually near the end of SPM as we speak; it can be bloated and/or sloppy at times, but I really dig the art style, which was a perfect fit for the Wii, and have overall been enjoying myself. I haven't spent any significant time with any of the Paper Mario games that followed it, though I am aware that they tend not to be held in particularly high regard...either way, unless something goes really awry really soon it looks like I'll at least end up placing it into the "the last good one" category as opposed to the "where everything went to heck" category, if nothing else.

Spelunky 2 :D
I was kind of worried that it might feel too familiar and a little lacking in surprises after sinking so much time into the original.
Happy to report I was completely wrong, already the amount of new stuff is almost overwhelming, in a good way.
This was an event for me, so I got the beers in and ended up dying in stupider and stupider ways the more I consumed. I'll play in seriously tonight :)

Picked up the GOG release of "Control."

This is probably the most fun I've had with a Remedy game, and I really like the game's whole Beyond the Black Rainbow aesthetic (minus the music, sadly).

But messing around with the limited slideshow ray-tracing my 1660 is capable of showing, I've come to the conclusion that this game's aesthetics don't work without ray-tracing. So much of it is about lightplay off reflective surfaces and without it enabled the whole game looses its ooky atmosphere and kinda becomes as boring as wandering through concrete brutalist architecture can be in real life. So I'm shelving it until I get a 3000 series GPU.

I mean it's the most fun I've had in a Remedy game, that doesn't mean it's fantastic as a general game. The latter Saints Row games offered way better action. Plus there's this thing with Remedy games where the mouseaiming in them is always "off" in a way I've never seen replicated in other shooters, so I had to swallow my pride and enable aim-assist to actually have some fun in the fight scenes.

This is pretty much my mentality for this stuff. I've been putting off a new GPU for years and I've got a big backlog of stuff I want to play once I decide I want to put money into a good GPU. I've purchased stuff on Steam that I can't really play yet when it was on super sale, etc.

However, I really want to see what happens with the whole Intel-AMD-NVidia/ARM situation over the next few years before making a decision to actually buy a whole new PC.
I'm wondering how much of a shift there will be in computer gaming as a platform. Steam seemed relatively friendly to the idea of supporting the Shield device, in spite of it's failure. I'm curious to see if the new ARM-Nvidia merger is going to have a greater impact on the market for ARM based gaming PCs. Also, it really seems like AMD is eating Intel's lunch right now, but Intel still might get their shit together over the next couple years. It's not a great time for new equipment with so many unknowns.

IAC, so long as society doesn't collapse over the next year, there will always be another cooler GPU coming out if you wait a little while. In a few years, we'll have ray tracing coming out of our ears.

Yeah, if Serious Sam 4 runs well on my 1660 next week, I just might skip the 3000 myself. Cyberpunk is sure to be a bugfest on release and will need a few months of patching.

And if I absolutely must have an Alice-in-Wonderland 3rd Person Shooter in a giant fantastical environment full of ooky adversaries with a female protagonist voiced by a professional actress, Ultra Ultra's Echo runs like a dream on my current setup and arguably looks better than Control, despite the older tech.

Truth be told the game that I've enjoyed the most this past month is Monster Train, which I assume runs on a potato. A much more generous version of Slay the Spire and a podcast game par excellence.

I played Silent Hill Homecoming this weekend. Ran into a softlock glitch that's apparently known in the church where you have to slash one of the paintings and then get stuck in the animation. Hadn't saved in a while... learned from that one to save CONSTANTLY (which conveniently doesn't affect game rank at the end, since there's no star ranking as in previous games). Also ran into a glitch where my character remained stuck in the weapon raised animation, which fortunately ended when an enemy hit me.

It's... I dunno, I'm not sure the story's as bad as people would like to make out, but it certainly doesn't hold a candle to SH1/2/3/4. The supporting characters kinda come and go without too much meaningful interaction about what's going on until the last part of the game, and the combat honestly isn't as good as SH3. It's weird being in melee and seeing other enemies patiently wait for you to deal with the current enemy. You also can't block with the guns properly, making them outright worse than melee for anything you can't kill quickly before it gets close.

-

Also played the first Gears of War. Hadn't actually played it through before; I really appreciate Vanquish even more now for basically polishing and refining the "cover shooter" genre into perfection. GoW's dodge and run have a noticeable input lag, you have to deal with your AI partner constantly gameovering you by getting themselves killed on stupid stuff, you can't revive them when in cover it seems, so you have to pop your head up to revive them (or just kill the current enemy wave). Early on there's a monster with instant kill attacks that your AI partner loves to just stand there and get downed by unless you're very quick about rushing through the area (using your grenades to bust the doors down instead of waiting helps).

Gears of War is completely a co-op game. A majority of the game is designed entirely around covering for eachother.
It's a ton of fun played like that, but it's really not that great solo.

It is, and I've only ever played it solo. The cover system isn't the worst, but the game is very difficult on single player mode, especially so if you care about finding the BSAA emblems.

It's not just the gameplay mechanics of RE5, but that actual level design that assumes two people playing at the same time.

That said, I personally liked it better than 4. I found it to be a better looking game and it lacked some of the things in 4 that I didn't really like, such as the levels with the girl and the boss fights weren't as bad.

Still haven't played 6, I think I'm still committed to skipping that one forever.

Having played both exclusively solo, I can't agree.

Resi 5 - the AI will occasionally do stupid things like wasting healing items or stopping to fight when you're running, but it's infrequent. Give Sheva a submachine gun and keep her away from healing items, and the AI is genuinely helpful. I usually use her as a grenade store. Based on normal difficulty.

Gears of War - I've rarely game overed through an AI teammate getting killed. Sure, I've got killed trying to get to a downed teammate, but never often enough to be frustrating. A couple of set pieces through the series (turret defense against squiddies, and the capture things in Gears 4/5) are a bit much solo but not insurmountable. The only time I've hit a roadblock is a brumak fight after a branching path in the first game - one path is impossible played solo on hardcore, but the other is dead easy, and the save point is before the branch. Based on playing all the titles on Hardcore on first playthrough (and whatever they renamed it in Gears 5).

Gears is still great fun played solo, so maybe you just don't enjoy the game? Resi 5 is a bit more effort because you have to inventory manage Sheva but I still had a good time with it.

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed RE5 solo. I like it better than 4, actually. The point I was making is that it's a relatively difficult game, and having a real person as Sheva, assuming they are a decent player, must make the game comparatively easier to play through. She's certainly not the worst AI, and it's totally playable, but that doesn't come close to a warm body to strategize with.

It's a perfectly decent game solo, I wasn't disliking it, just was appreciating how much more Vanquish improved on the formula (I really like AI partners that can't be killed, so you do not feel obligated to babysit the AI if it behaves in an unusual way and isn't rigidly following orders like how RE4 works). Colours are a bit on the grey side for my tastes but I guess enemies are meant to be more camouflaged. The dumbest thing is the cutscene where Kim dies, standing there in the complete open shouting "take cover" when you've already taken cover as a guy casually walks up and stabs him somehow without being seen and with no effort.

The default assault rifle is slightly trash though, the Locust equivalent is much more accurate, powerful, blindfires better, and ammo's plentiful.

Whether the game is hard or easy is besides the point, the level design, and the game design entirely is based entirely on the co-op mechanics.

Sure, you can have fun playing solo, but the time I spent with the game in solo doesn't compare the least to how much I enjoyed playing it through with a friend in couch co-op.

Sorry, replied/replying in general because quoting is a pain on mobile!

"A warm body to strategise with" ooer :D

On Resi 5, I didn't find it especially challenging on normal - though I did play it on easy first time around some 10 years ago (as I'd had an 8 year break from modern gaming, I was nervous and dual analogue sticks were new to me!), so had a rough idea what to expect when I came back to it via the xbone HD re-release. It does have some sections where you feel the enemies will never end or something just won't die and those are probably designed to be more balanced in co-op. Anything with well-designed co-op is going to be more fun with a human out of sheer socialisation, but the meme is Resi 5's broken as a single player game - which couldn't be further from the truth. Resi 6, on the other hand, is very much geared around co-op and your AI may as well not be there. It does so little that you find yourself single-handedly fighting off bullet sponges in a confined area so often, you need to have it on easy to get any enjoyment out of it at all.

If that Kim death cutscene is dumb, Resi 6 has so much to top it. Leon pleading with zombie president as though it'd make any difference is one of the single stupidest things I've seen in a game that takes itself seriously. Turn off QTEs too, as suddenly being killed stops being funny when you respawn only to get a different button prompt and still get comically fed into a mincer for the umpteenth time!

Vanquish I think is an odd comparison with Gears - they're both third person and have cover mechanics, but Vanquish actively penalises your score for being in cover (and is way more fun on the move!) whilst Gears mandates a slower progression revolving around cover. If you put them on a spectrum, Binary Domain is probably at the mid-point between them. Gears' overall pace in firefights is probably why your roadie run and dodges are slower to execute - they're intended as planned movements. You will die in Gears if you get flanked, but the enemies move slowly and deliberately too so you can use run/dodge to gain an advantage - I don't think I've ever felt Gears unfair if I've been trapped, it's more I've not paid attention to the battlefield. Having a co-op partner definitely helps, but I don't think it needs co-op to be enjoyable. While I too prefer the disposable AI in Vanquish, I don't feel I'm babysitting it in Gears - compared with Binary Domain where it needs to be looked after, even ignoring its teammate reputation system. It's just kind of there, doesn't kill too much to take the game away from you and mostly takes a good amount of enemy fire (without being a total kamikaze... mostly) so as to not make it feel everything is only targeting you.

I'll generally keep the Lancer around because it has a good ammo capacity. It's a bit naff, agreed - but Hammerburst does run dry easily in extended firefights. I'll usually equip Lancer for the grunts and save Hammerburst/Longshot for priority targets. And keep a heavy pistol equipped just in case things go to complete shit! I've seen people online swearing by the shotgun, so I think it is mostly balanced to be open to different playstyles.

8-Bit Armies
Stuck on a Guardians mission where I have to destroy a bunch of power stations. Feels like every single time I've figured out what to do, the AI seems to do something totally different to counteract it.

Made it halfway through act 3. It still feels like I gotta babysit the AI at times, which is a pain in the Marcus + Dom duo segments. Being able to order Dom to retreat helps, although at one point in act 2 he got stuck on a wall and refused to move from it when ordered, and another time the retreat order made him run into darkness and get eaten by kryll, despite there being plenty of light (gas station). The AI is good about not getting downed behind cover usually, but very often the AI would run up and die in the frontlines if left to their own devices. I'm finding just killing everything off is easier and safer than trying to actually save 'em as the enemies are more or less ignoring the AI once they're bleeding out.

Shotgun's decent as it's the best blind-fire weapon when enemies rush at close range, but damage dropoff is tremendous and useless. It works best about 5 character lengths away to point blank range, but is too weak beyond that and doesn't have a high enough pellet count or tight enough spread to work at range. I read a weapon guide that laughably claims it's one of the best shotguns in a videogame. It's not as useful as a Longshot + Hammerburst is, but it's still a good secondary weapon if you're worried your position will get rushed.

Where are all the Boltoks? I picked up another Snub pistol by accident (decently quick kills if you're good at mashing, but takes up nearly an entire clip to kill with body shots) and magnum pistols seem few and far between. Ah well.

Played through Shining Force Sword of Hajya over the past couple weeks.

Thanks to Bratwurst's consolized GG I've been reacquainting myself with the GG library.
One of the first games I was looking forward to giving a try on a big screen was GG Gunstar Heroes. I'd thought it would be an exclusive original game, but it's really just a stripped down remake of the 16-bit original (at least as far as I saw). It's admirable and impressive in it's own ways, but it just left me wanting to play the original.

I've dabbled with a dozen other GG games like Coca Cola Kid and the Mickey and Donald games and then all the GG shoot'em-ups. Galaga '88 was surprisingly a disappointment, the PC-Engine version spoiled me I guess.
GG Aleste surprised me with having more of a Zanac feeling than the later Aleste games. (and doubly surprised to see soon after I first played through it now announced for Switch and PS4!)

It has been quite a while since a videogame has hooked me.
I was reluctant to start into Sword of Hajya because in recent years I've found long role-playing or strategy games become a chore to complete. Sword of Hajya is very close in play and presentation to the other well known Shining Force strategy games. It's quick and snappy to get into or continue where one leaves off. The difficulty is generally easy, and you can tweak the challenge yourself by trying to evenly level up characters or get a no-death clear. The story is relatively dark and the writing is solid and engaging enough for an adult. Some of the graphics and color usage are splendid on the GG. Throughout the game the music was fitting and was never annoying.

Ultimately though, I'm left disappointed with Sword of Hajya. There was hardly any challenge for most of the game. I don't think I had to replay a battle until 22. Battle 23 took me a number of tries and a little bit of grinding. And then the final battle (24) only took me one try.
At the point my characters finally had strong magic and a variety of spells; both offensive and defensive to use, the game was then over.
You put in the time to build up your characters and know their skills and specialties, and then there was no more game to play. Like you only barely get a taste of your characters at their full potential.
Playing this on Sega-CD is the way to go as you get the other "Books" to flesh-out the game.
I am looking forward to trying Final Conflict on GG to see what more they squeezed out of the GG, but I doubt I'd give it a full play through.
This fresh taste of Shining Force has really got me wanting to play the full translated Saturn trilogy.

You might want to check out Shining CD if you can. It's basically SFG1&2 plus basically SFG3&4. I remember it being a big deal among RPG fans at the time, but I never had a Sega CD.

so what you're saying is TLDR

SFCD was indeed my introduction to the series (well, after In The Darkness).
At the time; 1995, I didn't think I liked these kinds of games. Military Madness having been my only real similar experience. But considering the software drought while being a Sega CD owner, Shining Force CD became a top-tier title to own. Once I made the commitment to buy a Backup RAM cart, SFCD was the first title to purchase, I think they charged a premium too, like $54.99 or $59.99, instead of the expected $49.99.
Anyhow, so yeah, I've played the shit out of SFCD. That was part of the appeal of giving Sword of Hajya a go, to see the source material. And really only some of it was familiar to me from SFCD, like when Nick showed up...
come to think of it, that would be a heck of a hack job if someone would combine all three Game Gear games into one cohesive game...
Supposedly the graphics got an overhaul in Final Conflict as compared to the two Gaiden games.

I remember reading the reviews of SFCD, probably in EGM, and thinking it looked cool.
I was definitely a SF1/2 fan, and a Shining in the Darkness fan for that matter. Haven't played SF3, will probably give that one a go.

I'm playing Burger Time. It's the same game so far as I can tell, but the Famicom version.

High off Origami King, I'm playing Thousand Year Door... aka the game everyone is whining that Origami King isn't.

Aaaaaand, I think there might be some selective memory going on with people who probably haven't played the game recently.
Like, it's a really likable game, and there's so much cool stuff in it that I enjoy, so I can understand why you'd have fond memories of it. But god damn, there's also a lot of teeeeedious walking back and forth between the same areas, along a completely linear path.

Spelunky 2 is hard. After spending so many hours on the original, I didn't expect a lot in the way of resistance from this. My god was I wrong. Even on the first world, the new enemies mean that you have to be on the ball every second of every run - nowhere is safe, and one wrong slip can lead to an almost instant death depending on which combination of baddies have you cornered. It's procedural play at it's finest, and it's rare to play a game where sometimes a death is simply funny as hell.

Between this and Judgement, my gaming time for the next month or so is pretty much spoken for. I never really got into the slot-car racing in Yakuza, but the drone racing in Jeudgement is superb, between that, the HoTD rip and Night Raid, actual progress is pretty slow.

The Mario collection has barely gotten a look in yet, though the hour or so I've had on Mario 64 leads me to think that it's far, far better than I gave it credit for at the time. Bearing in mind my first Mario was World, and I fucking adored it, I was still pretty sore that SM64 wasn't a 2D platformer.

I'm finally getting into Doom2016. Put more RAM and an SSD into my potato, now it hovers decently around 60FPS and doesn't take centuries to load.

Fucking hell, this game is everything I wanted it to be.
