Hiroshi Iuchi's UBUSUNA for the PS4

Post by ShewtUmOp »

He teased that he was working on a new shmup for the PS4 way back in 2014. What the heck happened to it? Vaporware?

I know that he left Treasure for M2. Honestly, if he had stayed at Treasure, there probably would have been even LESS of a chance of this ever coming out. But remember everyone's initial response to the silence on Raiden V when it was announced for the Xbox One?

Anyways, anyone expecting anything? Like an Ikaruga spiritual successor? I am assuming Treasure still owns the Ikaruga name and contents within.

At the beginning of the year Iuchi said development was temporarily suspended due to another project.

Let's see what this year's TGS brings but it really doesn't look like they're currently working on it.

Sad! The gaming industry can always use new high-profile SHMUPS. My PS4 SHMUP collection was finally starting to become noticeable. Oh well, maybe one day.

In a June 7th (2018) French-language interview with Shmup'em all, when asked if they are planning any original shooters besides Ninja Soldier, M2 president Naoki Horii says Iuchi is working on one; he doesn't name the game, but in any case, according to the interview, Iuchi is still working on an original shmup at M2.

there appears to be some in-development footage of Ubusana in this Dreamcast documentary. Is that new?

That's definitely new, looks like a prototype was set up for showcasing somewhere. Very nice.

I see our main man did mention it on his now downsized site http://www.vgmaterials.com/

Keep holding that candle.

Is his site’s banner image from Ubusuna, I wonder?

I'm pretty sure it is, the older banners were also, the previous one was more obvious as it featured polarized bullets flying around, like you see in the footage from this interview.

Part 1 also has a segment where our savior reminisces about RSG/Ikaruga and some never before seen prototype footage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD7JYqty8aE&t=36m

"It has Ikaruga-like attributes, but is different in that vectors are 180 degrees."

Time to figure out what this means.

It's an M2 joint, so I'm down. I really want to see this game in action. Didn't he also do Kokuga? That was a solid game that definitely needs a Switch port of some kind. It'd work real well as a twin-sticker.

I’m bumping this thread for those DYING for Ubusana news (like me).

For those that didn’t see/hear, they talked about it on the M2 stream this morning; They even played the music for the first stage! Go here to listen to it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRczDpc ... .be&t=5968

Iuchi says the game is done; they’re in the polishing/music composition stage of production.

If the game is 100% complete, why don't they just drop a trailer and release date already? I just hope it comes out before the end of 2020.

Wow, sort of assumed this was vaporware because of the long radio silence. Hoping this has a radically different chaining system to either Radiant Silvergun or Ikaruga. Or better yet no chaining system at all. Just blow up things. :D

I'm hoping this game will end up becoming the next Ikaruga.

And for those who missed it: Here are some shots of the Ubusuna title screen, screen-capped from a Dreamcast documentary that was released a few years back.

What's really interesting in that documentary are the few seconds that show a design document giving some clues on how Ubusuna might play. Black/white enemies and boss parts, black/white bullets that show scatter and homing attacks, 16:9 ratio. It's clearly another exploration of polarity with classic Iuchi-style bosses, but nothing is shown regarding player mechanics.

It was stated the game is playable 'start to end' but that they still have a long way to go on graphics and polishing. I would guess late 2021 at the absolute earliest but wouldn't be surprised if it's longer. Hopefully Horii gives Iuchi the time and resources for the final push rather than rushing it out (or getting shelved, though that seems less unlikely now).

2020 update from Hiroshi Iuchi is here: http://www.vgmaterials.com/

The st1 music theme posted earlier sounds good, maybe less unique than the previous soundtracks in the series, but it's obvious we're getting something with Ikaruga/RSG's atmosphere.

Also, was it ever confirmed at any point what the game is like? Vertical, horizontal, vertizontal, aspect ratio, etc? From what I recall we've only seen a design document and a cutscene, which isn't much to go on.

I’m thrilled there’s an update, but judging by the tone and detail of the post, I don’t think there’s any chance this game is getting released in 2021.

Wake me up in 2022.
