Chris Nolan movies look fantastic and their stories flirt with deep issues, but upon closer examination the writing turns out to be shallow and almost none of the rhetorical flourishes that imply depth ever pay off.

Just saw Tenet.

I hope now you guys can finally recognise Nolan’s glaring scriptwriting and dialogue inadequacies, and his casting of actors is atrocious.

Let’s face it, John David Washington, AKA Poker Face, may as well have been in a totally different, much more casual, non-humanity threatening movie here and you would never have guessed.

Haha, I felt the same way about Tenet. Take a bog standard action flick and jumble the plot around using a ridiculous but pointless gimmick and there’s your new Nolan “masterpiece.”

Fighting Elegy / Kenka Elegy (1966)

Set in 1930's Wakayama (if memory serves), a high schooler who boards with a local Catholic family is hot for the daughter, but classmates, club members, and teachers have other ideas for how he should deal with his angst. Quite a weird number as it's a satire on gender norms. Some cheesy fights but also some really cool shit. Funny for the most part but has a dark turn towards the end. I actually got this off of BFI's list of Japanese films that took advantage of cinema scope, and in that regard this definitely doesn't disappoint.

I’ve popped in on occasion. After watching Tenet I felt obligated to walk the internet to find all the people who like to gargle Nolan’s nuts and ready the verbal hollow points.

Tenet was the culmination of things he’s done wrong since the start of his career, pretty much. I was somewhat relieved that they were so glaring this time around that my prior arguments against his “genius” (he’s not a genius) may be considered more valid.

And Kenneth Branagh. Again.

Literally ruins every film he’s in.

Ugh! CGI blood, choppy fight editing, unclear rules as to exactly how indestructible ninjas are supposed to be and how their shadow teleporting powers work.

And whose stupid idea was it to give throwing stars those cartoon "swoosh" effects?
Back in the day I like those "swoosh" VFX on weapons, especially how chain blade looks here. The scene with bloody washing machine is stuck on my head, so brutal.

But in the Harry Potter movie, his character is supposed to be useless, so it works out.

Police Story III: Supercop
Still a really good one, and very much enjoyed the action and the more subtle comedy in the serious action scenes. Hong Kong Rescue this year did update his release to be a correct color graded release using the 4K master (using a few different sources as references) and it looks amazing. I dunno why the official restoration makes the movie look like every scene is shot in the evening. Not Jackie at his best (but very close to it), but it has some of the best stuntwork he's ever been involved in.

Jason Momoa is not who I would have expected to play Duncan Idaho in the upcoming Dune movie but when I stop to think about it, it's a brilliant choice, as dude is charismatic AF while still physically imposing, both the strongest traits of the character in the book.

But I do not see Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck. He's too good-looking and too "poor man's Nick Nolte" for the part. Can you see him whimsically playing songs and spouting off lines of poetry?

Cautiously optimistic, because I've liked the director's previous work. At the very least it can't be worse than the Lynch version.

Is Ninja Assassin a bad movie? Yes.

Do I still watch it once a year while high? Yes.

Something about it I dig, even with all the flaws.

Oh man, if it's ninja cheese you want, why not the Cannon Films originals like Revenge of the Ninja (1983)?

How much cooler is this than an old man and a pop star turning into cartoon shadows at each other until body parts start falling off?

Mignonnes (2020), currently breaking the internet under its Western title "Cuties." The ostensibly conservative backlash has led several of my favourite internet stars - like MovieBob, The Diabetic Ubermensch - to its ardent defense. "You've not even seen it!" they cry. O RLY? Image Wait. Image Fuck! Oh well, at least I'm an informed watchlist resident! Image

Spoiler
Image

Pictured: a MovieBob

Amy, an 11y/o Senegalese Muslim girl living in France, is bored with her blandly secure home life. Intrigued by a twerking 11y/o in her building's laundry room, she joins an amateur dance troupe, steals her uncle's phone, and is drawn into the putatively Western culture of Children Twerking On The Internet.

Exhibit A: this former Youtube star, currently doing ten years in prison

Pre-teen drama ensues, as Amy steals from her mom to buy hooker pants, and is confronted by her uncle, who she rebukes by posting nudes via his phone. Her groupmates are appalled by this act, kicking her out. On the day of the Big Contest, she batters her replacement, forcing herself back into the group. Amy and co twerk and writhe onstage, to ambiguous crowd response, before she starts to cry and runs home. The film closes with a happy Amy skipping rope with other children in the street, dressed in neither her stifling hijab, nor hooker pants, but the casual Western kid's attire of jeans and a t-shirt.

In short, this is shallow, broadly agreeable social commentary - The key to life is balance, as the note on my first job's toilet door said - mutated into a cultural shitstorm by purposefully lascivious direction. For 99% of its intended 18+ audience, the reaction will be a discomfited "No shit kids shouldn't be twerking, also JFC this movie is gross." For the pedos, I can only assume this'll be a hoot. For the Current Year +Nth shitshow and its cast of MovieBobs and Right Wing Death Squads (hello!), it's brought a bonanza of pure, unadulterated craic.

Image

TLDR If you're concerned about the issues raised here: rather than enduring this facile, alternatingly dull/lurid film, research them and draw your own conclusions. If you're a pedophile: see a doctor. It's not your fault, and it's nothing to be ashamed of, but unfortunately, it'd be better you neck yourself than act on your impulses. If you're a MovieBob: You won't see my face, motherfucker. Image

Watched Mother To Earth - The Untold Story Of Earth Bound today. Not sure how it came on my radar, but seemed interesting enough. Follows the story of Mother 1 and how it became Earthbound (Zero), and traces the famous prototype cart from its development to cancellation to dump, and to the cart's status today. Along the way they talk about the Mother fandom in the West, then hook up with a very impressive Japanese collector, and eventually get an interview with Keiichi Suzuki who pulls out an Eight Melodies demo tape and plays it for them.

It's OK overall, but the parts with ex NOA guys and the guys in Japan are great. I want to hear more about the NOA Nintendo counsellors/testers because the gaming help call center thing is very much of its time but cool in its own way. Bet they have some stories.

The Vigil

A soft-hearted twist on traditional horror situations. Poor Jacob, formerly a young Orthodox Jew in New York, is hired by the rabbi he doesn't want anything to do with any more to spend the night watching a dead old man and reciting prayers.
But the widow is strange, the house is creepy, the rabbi sought Jacob as a last minute replacement for a relative who ran away because he was scared, and indeed strange phenomena ramp up very quickly and receive a prompt, and uncontested supernatural explanation (in addition to Jacob's hallucination issues).
Just when one would expect something highly unpleasant to happen the plot takes a gradual but surprising turn towards nonviolent redemption and self-improvement: we find out what's the problem with Jacob and what's the problem with the deceased and at dawn Jacob is slightly hurt but definitely less unhappy.

Nice photography, with lamps, candles and other interesting light sources.

Anyways, bout the casting: Brolin would have been a more appropriate Duncan. In fact, Brolin, Oscar Isaac, and Rebecca Ferguson are about the only people in the cast who can fucking act. Oops, Stellan Skarsgårds in there too.

Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho: so every woman and half the men can change their panties/underwear after the show. Miserable actor.
Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides: he's got two uses, first is to attract the "omg, he's so hawwwwt" tweens, the second is to decapitate him and use his chin as a pizza-cutter. Miserable actor.
David Dastmalchian as Piter: bahaha, the dude from the IT Crowd. yea, alright, I'll wait and see on this one.
Zendaya as Chani: sweet! a mononym! otherwise, WHO?!

The most impressive thing about the trailer was the depiction of the Thopter. My only conclusion is Villeneuve bothered to read the 4-5 whole sentences Herbert used to describe it, which Lynch didn't cause many of his "interpretations" made no
fucking sense at all; and that'll be my only jab at the guy because for all it's faults, I adore the Directors cut of the original; the casting is phenomenal. Sometimes, I'll entertain the idea of Jodorowsky haven been given the green light and leaving us with a 6-hour acid trip.

Oh but don't get me wrong. I'm excited as shit and I'll brave the rona and mow my way through hordes of tween vermin who're only there to see Chalamets jawline to get a good seat for this fucker.

edit: almost forgot. This is the first of two movies.
edit: Regardless of my juvenile qualms regarding half the cast, a pivotal aspect will be Jessica's role (no more than a tertiary character in the '84 production), who is arguably the primary in the first 1/2 of the novel.

Red Beard
While this isn't the greatest thing Kurosawa ever directed, this is in his top 5 for sure. Caught this on TCM during a marathon of movies that centered around doctors, and this blew me away. How the tone shifted after intermission but didn't slow the movie down, nor make it feel out of place was incredible. Plus all that beard stroking was just like icing on the cake. Sadly there's no blu ray of this movie with english subs, yet this was clearly shown in HD.

The Void (2017) Hicksville USA: Scary Rednecks are blasting n' burning teenagers in a farmhouse, one of whom escapes to the car of Nice Cop! They go to Creepy Hospital, which isn't doing great, having been gutted by a recent fire, when Scary Rednecks arrive! But wait, who are these shrouded knife-wielding fucks encircling Creepy Hospital??? And is Creepy Doc up to something! Warts n' all homage to Hellraiser 2 (not Hellraiser 1!) by way of From Beyond and Prince of Darkness. That is to say, crazy occult shit with hearty helpings of practical bodyhorror, steeped in cosmic menace.

Image

Best features by far are the creature effects and sets. Beyond the intact facade of Creepy Hospital lies a malleable labyrinth of psychohorror. Creepy Doc is not my favourite narrative device, nor was he in From Beyond, tbh - if we must, his less omniscient counterpart Creepy Prof (cf Event Horizon) is preferable. That forgiven, it's a fine B-horror evening, with some movingly impressive practicals. Mewling juggernauts of bone n' brain spewing buckets of toxic guts when boomsticked, pitiably arse-faced ghouls haplessly maiming all in reach, an eerily pursuing Ghost Mom (w/Ghost Dead Baby) - it's a right laugh, and 90minute-tight (runtime of the gods). Not bad at all, and MUCH healthier for your kids than that lame Paranormal Business 3: A Ghost Touch My Pen0r shite!

EXTREME SPOILER:

The Jack in the Box

A low budget British horror film that gives a strong impression of having plot holes because they are traditional and leaves the viewer in doubt: a mediocre serious effort, or a tongue in cheek semi-parody? Probably a bit of both.

An old Jack-in-the-Box toy contains (not very effectively, of course) a murderous demon, and is activated in a nice museum in a small town when the protagonist (a sad and insomniac American youth) discovers it on his first day of his new custodian job.
The bad ending can be entirely ascribed to natural selection, with contrived explanations for the continued survival of the protagonist; helpers, from the survivor of the previous activation cycle (who offers hearty words of discouragement) to Maurice the demonologist (who doesn't even answer the phone and never leaves the safety of his house) are unusually ineffective.

Real Steel: **1/2

A film from 2011 that now mostly serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of loading your film with excessive product placement. Set in the year 2020 (which is its own entirely different set of "mugged by reality" problems, but that's not important right now,) it stars Hugh Jackman as a down on his luck former boxer whose job was taken over by robots (seriously, and yes, it's exactly as absurd as it sounds) forced to become a really terrible parent to a kid obsessed with robot fighting, who finds a robot in a junkyard and somehow makes a successful robot fighter out of it in a paint-by-numbers sports movie plot.

The product placement problems come mostly from the fact that most of the products advertised either no longer exist in 2020 (Virgin America, merged with Alaska Airlines in 2018), are completely irrelevant now (I don't think even Microsoft expects Bing to ever be relevant again, much less worth naming an arena for) or are just plain stupid (Xbox 720, LOL). The result is a film that is less than 10 years old, and has somehow aged so badly it's impossible to take seriously now.

The Social Dilemma

As someone that knows how the sausage is made, not a lot of this surprised me... definitely not to the levels of some of my FB friends said (on FB). That being said, for many years (like 8 at least) I've had notifications set to an absolute minimum, so I basically only see notifications when I want to see notifications. I'm not a fool enough to think I've gamed the system, but I do think that 90% of my social network time is shitposts and memes (consuming and posting) which makes me feel a bit less of a tool.

My Octopus Teacher

Beautifully shot documentary. So much better than all the true crime bullshit usual Netflix fanfare.
