Heads up!

WaPo is at it again. Publishing a string of propaganda to explain away Donald Trump's assault on the USPS.

Yes. The "liberal" WaPo is walking in lockstep with the GOP president.

Surprised? If you are, you're stupid.

We get to vote for ordinary GOP this year to get rid of wingnut GOP.

Don't count on the union busting and "free market" shit stopping, though.

Trump is the greatest the gift the establishment ever dreamed of. Their next favorite gift is the corona flu.

It's too urgent to change anything!

It's neat that the layers of propaganda are targeted at different people. So as to get full spectrum coverage of the population as possible - The folks who are too damn tired from having ~50% of their lives consumed by work and don't care about politics don't hear about any of the kill the post office bills.

Then you have things like the News Hour and literature, for people actually curious enough to put energy into learning about stuff. They might even remember who David Brooks is! Politifact is peak "neutral capitalist arbitor", where everything is 'half true' unless they can find a sufficiently complicated meme and then they can cherry pick one specific targeted portion of the whole instead of the actual substance or strongest points.

Fox News is heavily branded for people who are angry and horny, for example. (You can tell there's no leftist media on tv because those guys are horny for trains and I've never seen any trains or conversations on transit planning on tv.)

It's amazing how laissez faire propaganda is so much superior to strict state propaganda systems - if you don't believe one set of lies you can pick another. And they make a profit off of it, what a deal!

The post is reported to have over one million digital subscriptions. Really the issue isn't with the Post, but these weird inhuman shadow people who think the world is a better place with the Washington Post in it.

Yet another truly shocking development which, of course, nobody in a million years could have ever seen coming a million fucking miles away or anything. Some of my favorite tidbits, from a few different sources, though it's honestly hard to leave anything out:
The four men are indicted for allegedly using hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to an online crowdfunding campaign called We Build the Wall for personal expenses, among other things. Bannon and another defendant, Brian Kolfage, promised donors that the campaign, which ultimately raised more than $25 million, was "a volunteer organization" and that "100% of the funds raised...will be used in the execution of our mission and purpose," according to the indictment unsealed Thursday.

But instead, according to prosecutors, Bannon, through a non-profit under his control, used more than $1 million from We Build the Wall to "secretly" pay Kolfage and cover hundreds of thousands of dollars in Bannon's personal expenses.

Kolfage, according to the charges, spent more than $350,000 of the donations on personal expenses, including cosmetic surgery, a luxury SUV, a golf cart, payments toward a boat, home renovations, jewelry, personal tax payments and credit card debt.
Accused fraudster and former White House strategist Steve Bannon was aboard a $28 million yacht owned by a Chinese billionaire when he was arrested on fraud charges Thursday morning, according to reports.

The 150-foot mega vessel was in the Long Island Sound near Westbrook, Connecticut, when President Trump’s former strategist was picked up by US Postal Service inspectors, the Hartford Courant reported.

The boat, the Lady May, is owned by Guo Wengui, one of China’s most wanted fugitives, who is wanted in Beijing on fraud, blackmail and bribery charges, according to the Washington Post.
(  )
Following the indictment, Trump said he hadn’t dealt with Bannon “for a very long period of time.”

“I don't like that project. I thought it was being done for showboating reasons,” Trump said. “It was something that I very much felt was inappropriate to be doing.”

Trump was made aware of the “We Build The Wall” campaign shortly after its launch. Former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who was an advisory board member for the nonprofit established by the campaign, told The New York Times in January 2019 that the effort had received the president’s blessing.

“I talked with the president, and the We Build The Wall Effort came up,” Kobach said. “The president said ‘the project has my blessing, and you can tell the media that.’ ”

A website for the campaign still includes endorsements from the president's son Donald Trump Jr., former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and Kimberly Guilfoyle, a top fundraising official for the 2020 campaign.
Donald Trump Jr. was a special guest last year at an event hosted by "We Build the Wall," the group that former Trump campaign CEO Steve Bannon was arrested over on Thursday.

In a 15-minute speech at the July 2019 event, "Symposium at the Wall: Cartels, Trafficking and Asylum," Trump Jr. praised the group as an example of "private enterprise at its finest."

"This is what capitalism is all about. This is private enterprise at its finest. Doing it better, faster, cheaper than anything else. What you guys are doing is amazing," Trump Jr. said at the time, per the El Paso Times.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said in a statement that Trump had previously disavowed the We Build the Wall project.

"President Trump has always felt the Wall must be a government project and that it is far too big and complex to be handled privately," she said

It's a gloriously near-perfect distillation of the alt-right; self-interested criminal activity masquerading as patriotic free enterprise, taking utterly shameless advantage of the worst impulses of the most gullible, a pitifully thin "populist" patina stretched over a massive, furiously pulsating plutocratic core, and, of course, the immediate throwing under the bus of both allies and deeply, genuinely held beliefs and convictions the second they become even mildly inconvenient.

I can't fucking wait to hear how the Deep State managed to orchestrate this one. Can't fucking wait.

This is the most delicious example of self-destructively stupid conservatism we've seen since the Iraqi Dinar scam. Nazi grifters getting rich on the back of Hitler Youth. Everyone's hateable and I can watch them destroy each other with unmitigated glee.

While there is some schadenfreude to be had from morons somehow getting busted in a corrupt system where bribery, grifting and theft are perfectly legal (Bannon was already a two-digit millionaire from his work in banking and the online newsletter he headed), I too agree it's a bit hollow during the apocalypse. Would have been more fun in the 00's when we could still pretend we weren't absolutely doomed.
why do progressives have this reputation as insular unapproachable killjoys
Humor is another tool the capitalists use to exert control, along with anger and fear. Purge yourself of such worldly distractions and join us in conversations about how car culture - the need to own a car and then pay for car insurance, if you want to be a person - helps keep people down financially and socially.

... ok I see how materialism is so easily defeated. Even if we owned any media whatsoever, the material problems and solutions remain static as they've always been for hundreds of years - boring! The bitch fights between the sad depressing blue republican and the funny mean red republican are much better at capturing the mind.

Oh yes, we mustn't be taken in by empty distracting spectacle, especially on a video game enthusiast's forum!

Let's all talk about the evils of capitalism, just as soon as I finish taking a photo for the "Awesome stuff you just bought" thread!

I'm sure all the normie lurkers reading this exchange are saying, "Wow, this progressivism/socialism/communism stuff sounds great, just look how much fun its representatives are having. They sure aren't living down to the depressing concrete grey brutalist Stalin stereotype of the left that oligarch media has been force-feeding me from birth. Run a warm bath, pass me some razor blades, and above all else minimize every bit of hope or fun to be squeezed out of this moment that might keep morale up. That's praxis!"

It's not some kind of holy war where every exchange has stakes to it, as much as it can feel like that (since it's the only way we can exert even the illusion of having any power). People are adults and are formed from their own experiences over years - be gay+do crime either sounds good to them or it doesn't.

I'm just saying it feels a little, teeny bit like that SNL sketch where they sing to an effigy of Mueller for salvation. That's just me.

The DNC just showcased a ton of literal republicans and a few showboating virtue-posing celebrities, the RNC will have over the closest people to Dylann Roof as possible who haven't been convicted of murdering anyone, the dystopia and spectacle will go on.

If the mathematics and proof of concept behind universal health care don't sell it, I don't know what will.

I doubt "fun" will help people that are too stupid/stubborn to accept the numbers. It's obvious now that the American health care model is an unsustainable train wreck.

The idea sells itself. Would it help if I brought balloons and a pinata?

:) Some crooked rich guy got in trouble with the law and now he's going to court. He might get house arrest for a few weeks. Meh.

The only extremely wealthy people that do time are the ones that embarrass/threaten other extremely rich people. Did this guy rip off anybody that's really rich? Did he embarrass or expose lots of other wealthy people's bad behavior? If not, you probably won't be seeing him in jail.

I've been watching this politics game for decades. There's always some side show. Big deal.

As much as the two right wing parties like to put on a show and do professional wrestling stunts/shows for the cheering masses, they are united in the one thing they truly and deeply hate together: the plebs.

Meanwhile, in addition to the items I already listed a few posts back, the Postmaster General, despite promising to temporarily pause his efficiency measures within the Postal Service, has no intention of undoing any of the damage he's already done; Daddy intends to utilize law enforcement officers to prevent voter fraud at polling places; and the Attorney General, who has multiple Biden-related investigations open, brazenly refuses to state that he won't pull a Comey and start putting out releases right before the election. Naturally, there's not a peep of protest in regards to any of this from anywhere in the Republican party.

Y'know, just normal, silly both sides distractions.

Yeah, one side hates Ilhan Omar and fights her by doing embarrassing speeches at AIPAC, making passive aggressive sneers during interviews like you're a mean high school girl despite being an octogenarian, and running deep-pocketed candidates with cringey slogans about how she's not technically a real African-American.

The other side hates Ilhan Omar and fights her by openly espousing white nationalism, doing everything they can to make it impossible for her constituents to vote, and setting up paramilitaries answerable only to the president who put her face on firing range targets.

Six of one, half-a-dozen of the other! Not like there's a clear tactical choice to make between these two bad options that better advances the cause of socialism. And don't you DARE make fun of the right, that just proves you're a neoliberal puppet! I'm a real leftist!

I don't think the Democrats were expecting anyone to actually WATCH the damn thing, I think they wanted to generate headlines on Fox News about former republicans jumping party lines. And mission accomplished there. That's the only explanation for why they cheaped out on their Tim & Eric music act that makes sense.

Worth noting that the DNC's platform is not one and the same as Biden's because Biden wanted to end fossil fuel subsidies and the DNC itself dropped his idea from the platform. This party is not the monolith it pretends to be.

Also there will not be a countrywide voluntary stand-down of progressive groups for Biden like there was for Obama. Justice Dems gets stronger every cycle, careerist Dems are feeling the pressure, there's possibility here. Not Bernie possibility, but hope is not lost. Besides, hopelessness makes you sick in return for no practical utility. Every successful revolution contained just a pinch of hopeful delusion.

Long time fans of the thread will remember me chastising people for excessive spaces after a period. It's a vestigial practice from back when we had old fixed-width fonts on typewriters. Text would blend like a river, and it was a way to make it easier to recatch where you were reading. It was rendered obsolete by the invention of the variable width font. HTML in particular doesn't recognize more than a single space character at a time, and it has to be in-between other symbols to register. I'm not sure who's responsible for its continued propagation but they're the devil.

It reminds me that story of a girl who asks her mother how to bake a ham, and one of the steps involves slicing the ends off. When asked why it's done that way, the mother says "I don't know, that's just how we always did it." The girl goes to ask her grandmother about it, and the grandmother says "Well, back then we had a really small oven..."
