Is outzone a shmup?

Is Defender a shmup? I'd classify something like Commando or Ikari Warriors as a shmup even if it's not forced scrolling, but Contra or Metal Slug are platformers with shooting elements. Otherwise Super Mario Bros is a could be a shmup, too.

Defender is a form of shmup. So is Commando, Ikari Warriors, Jackal, and Smash TV. They don't have autoscrolling and in a subgenre of shmup that is sometimes referred to a push scrolling shmup? Smash TV, Monolith, and Enter the Gungeon would be examples of arena shmups, where the combat area is a fixed size but you can still move freely around it.

The jumping, platforming, gravity elements of run 'n guns make them too distinct to be considered shmups. The way you move around obstacles and make your attacks is fundamentally very different from an autoscrolling shmup like Gradius, and anyone arguing Contra is a shmup also has to argue something like Mega Man is a shmup. Run 'n guns have a very distinct feel in terms of how you move around the screen, compared to an autoscrolling shmup where you can fly anywhere you like, which is why they are not considered to be the same genre, despite many run 'n guns allowing you to flood the screen with shots akin to a traditional shmup.

Run 'n guns are considered distinct and thus not the forum's focus, but they and more melee combat-oriented platformers are very much appreciated around here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=45206

I find most of Compile's stuff to be hit-or-miss. I enjoy Spriggan and MUSHA but they're both very poorly balanced. Super Aleste, Zanac, Gunnac, etc are all overly-long and have too many stretches of nothing much going on.

I really don't care for multiple loops, and making the player clear the game twice in order to properly beat it is bullshit. Give me a normal and expert tour-de-force instead.

I don't know anyone who's claimed it's horrendous. A bit rough around the edges and the constant revenge bullets in Lunatic are annoying, as is the need to button mash to max out firing speed (contrary to other Touhou games), but it's a perfectly decent shmup. Love the music in the PC'98 games.

Contra shattered soldier and Neo Contra are SHMUPS i like them very much.
Especially shattered soldier, one of the best games ( for the first levels, the later levels i throw the gamepad away )

Soukyugurentai is better on Playstation than on Saturn. The additional ship (yellow boi) is a blast to play as, and the CGI cutscenes, though grainy, add a lot of atmosphere. The reported "major slowdown" is simply not an issue during regular gameplay, and only appears during a few scene transitions where nothing is shooting at you. The Saturn version looks sharper, no argument there, but the added content of the PS version makes up for it.

only i sold my saturn and need to install some emulator on my rpi4, hope it works ( with savestates ).

I've spent a lot of time playing Souky on PS1 [mostly because I didn't have a Saturn for a while] and... yeah, the slowdown isn't the worst issue. It is extremely noticeable though, and the game does bog down weirdly hard when it does. I do like the extra stuff in the PS1 release too.

Ikaruga is not only a boring game, it is also a RACIST game.

It pits blacks and whites against each other and even has bullets of opposite color deal more damage in a blatant promotion of racial hate.

Even though this has been pointed out by woke reviewers time and again, most people still pretend there's no issue and/or can't see the truth.
