Klonoa fans?
Anyone else dig these games? I just picked up Door to Phantomile on saturday, and I am loving it. Pace really picks up toward the end.
Now I just need to get the handheld one.

Klonoa's my favourite (and the only one I like, really) cute platformer character/game series. I have Door To Phantomille, Lunatea's Veil and Empire Of Dreams. I should track down the WSC ones eventually.
The games are highly enjoyable if rather easy. Luckily all the games have a "time attack" level of sorts where you really need to display a higher degree of mastery over the game.
Some of the songs are, eh...peculiar, to say the least. I'm sure Stepping Wind (the nonsense song from Lunatea's Veil where Klonoa says "wafuu!" a lot) could be used as a powerful torture method.

I'm a huge fan. Played 'em all except Klonoa Heroes. My favorite was definitely G2.
Namco rules.

There are three for GBA. Klonoa Heroes is a JP only action RPG though. I might still try to wade through it as Mr Driller make a little cameo in that one. G2 (dunno the N. America title) is the second of the two pure platformers on GBA and is just fantastic. Level design is straightup top shelf material.thesuperkillerxxx wrote:Now I just need to get the handheld one.

That would be "Dream Champ Tournament". Thanks to you, I just had to go to eBay and get one myself. Luckily it's very cheap.PaCrappa wrote:G2 (dunno the N. America title) is the second of the two pure platformers on GBA and is just fantastic. Level design is straightup top shelf material.
There's also Klonoa Beach Volley which got released in JP and PAL regions. And of course Klonoa makes an appearance in Namco X Capcom.

Haha, good call
G2 is truly the shit.
Beach Volley is pretty good. I just sold mine though as I never ever played it and it was worth quite a bit of loot on the ePay. If I really feel lost without it I'll just grab it for a fiver or something next time I'm Tokyo. Mostly though I'd rather play either of the Mario Tennises when I want that kind of game.

This is on my list of games to get soon. I loved the first one, even though I typically hate puzzle/platformers. A friend of mine said, "Yeah, it's like Kirby." when I asked about the first GBA game, so I expected something much different. I was pleased regardless though.Ghegs wrote:That would be "Dream Champ Tournament". Thanks to you, I just had to go to eBay and get one myself. Luckily it's very cheap.
Loved what I played of Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil, so when I got the first handheld one I was really let down. Just didn't feel like Klonoa to me.
I've wanted to pick up Dream Champ Tournament, but the first left such a sour taste.
Finding DTP out in the wild has proved impossible to me for the past 3 years, might have to eBay it one day.

Another fan here, nice gameplay, don't feel clunky at all, look fantastic, sound good too. I'd be surprised if we never see another one in the series.

I could transpose the lyrics from the OST booklet if you like (and yes, they have a translation).Ghegs wrote:Some of the songs are, eh...peculiar, to say the least. Thanks, but it's already been done.Kiken wrote:I could transpose the lyrics from the OST booklet if you like (and yes, they have a translation).

Heh, whenever I play the song my cat starts listening intensly.Klonoa wrote:Wafiyutu rirana wafirupu rurana seafidu!

Re: Klonoa fans?
Was gonna bump this since Phantasy Reverie Series is now out. Such an old topic too.
Re: Klonoa fans?
Picked up the collection on Switch a couple weeks ago. I'm a huge platformer fan. So far, I've played and finished the first game. Good game, but I need a lot more challenge in my platformers. Still, I can see why people love these games. The setting, music, just a charming game.
Re: Klonoa fans?
I still think I might cry when I get the game, though... And I'm gonna get some heat for this, but I don't really care all that much about Door to Phantomile. But Lunatea's Veil hits me right in the feels more, especially considering Lolo's voice actress Tomoko Kawakami died years ago. Plus that final hug between her and Klonoa is so goddamn emotional to watch, I had to put Rambo music up there to make it complete.

Re: Klonoa fans?
First game's ending made me cry and cry. 3; In front of both my little brother and his wife, establishing my burning hatred for Namco products.
Poor rabbitpuppy. It's like watching a four year-old trying to bribe his parents into not getting divorced by promising to never track mud into the house again, innocently unaware that there's a limit to what even the sheerest will can accomplish. When Jimmy's dreamland comes crashing down on his head like a ton of ice water at the denouement of Silent Hill 2, I pity him terribly. But that's a grown man who's made his mistakes and must now sink or swim. You gotta get up outta that chair Jimmy, I've rarely seen a fictional character so profoundly destroyed but you got a lotta fuckin balls too.
Klonoa's just a little kid, women and children shouldn't have to deal with this kinda shit. ;_;
I used to think the epilogue kinda ruined the ending's effect. But a couple years later, being a bit older, I realised if not for that, it'd have been one profoundly sorrowful little game - clearly not what it's going for. It'd be like an SH2 without Leave to balance out its dreadful other endings.

Looking back, though, Huepow's kind of an asshole there. On top of Klonoa getting pulled out of Phantomile, the whole time it happened immediately after Huepow essentially LIED to Klonoa the whole time. In the words of Jason Bourne: "I volunteered because of a lie!"BIL wrote:First game's ending made me cry and cry. 3; In front of both my little brother and his wife, establishing my burning hatred for Namco products.Poor rabbitpuppy. Re: Klonoa fans?
Yeah he even kinda mugs at the camera after poor Klonoa gets PWNed
Knowing the epilogue it's more "Don't cry bro, this isn't forever!" but without that? Oof, what a cunt!
You're not kidding, the Klonoa/JB resemblance is downright uncanny

Either way, I still feel more for Lolo than Huepow. That hug still makes me cry.

Re: Klonoa fans?
I've never played a Klonoa. Sell me on it.
Re: Klonoa fans?
Hmm. The first (only I've played) is an easy game, for sure... but it's also an unmistakably meticulous one. Very entertaining - and precise - superjump and hanging-grip mechanics, used in seamless concert over increasingly puzzlebox-oriented stage designs.
Aesthetically, the hybrid of somewhat blurry sprites and typically shop-worn PS1 polys may jar initially; but I found the slightly tatty, handmade feel totally endearing. Like running and jumping through a little papier mache world, the camera dutifully following along its rails.
Finishing the game unlocks a Time Attack course, which is IIRC pretty challenging, much moreso than the main storyline. Still, it's not a game I'd recommend for its challenge, so much as its balance of relaxing yet precision-based platforming and treasure hunting, as well as a genuinely memorable aesthetic and tone.
TLDR: Not an ironman killathon or anything, hit up SMB2J for that, but as a chillout it's superb; XTRA BOUNS POINTS if you dig PS1 aesthetics.

Well, if I choose to get the Phantasy Reverie Series, I just want to beat both games and be done with them. 100% and bonus doesn’t matter.
Re: Klonoa fans?
Also, tell me if you think Klonoa’s faces here are LOL or meme worthy material or not.

First one looks like my little friend's grown up quite a bit since we last met, what is going on just out of bottom frame?
I hope he's rubbered up! Second could make a decent DIDN'T READ LOL, although this SFC Kiki one will always top the list imo

Re: Klonoa fans?
Only played the first one, remake on Wii. Thought it was somewhat cute, but overall quite boring and lacking, with not much in the way of actual gameplay. Are the other games any better?
A better alternative to the weird PS1 era half-3D 2D platformer with a chill-out pace for me would be Tombi!
