Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Is there a shmup that penalizes or punishes you for excessive shooting? Like, if you fire when enemies aren't on the screen, or just hold autofire all the time.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Battle Garegga's the first example that comes to mind. Shooting puts the Rank (scaling difficulty) up. You legitimately have a lot of shooting to do in the game's densest straits, but you don't want to pre-emptively hold the button down at all times, like you might in other STGs. The shot rate is also player-determined. Holding Shot fires at its base rate, rapidly tapping Shot will permanently raise it to that frequency, and again, it has consequences for the Rank.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
The game Garegga is inspired by, Gun Frontier, also pushes up the rank if you just hold autofire. It may not matter though, because the rank is going through the roof - and so are you, scrub - whatever you do.
Of course, the game that epitomizes this most clearly to me as of late is Video System's Turbo Force. Unlike other Video System and Psikyo games, which give you temporary max power that you can 'deplete' and go down 1 level, in Turbo Force every power-up is like an ammo pickup, and if you keep holding fire you can go all the way down to square 1. Given the game's pernicious rank and randomization, this is death sentence more often than not. So shoot only when you have to, and plan your route! The survival horror of shmups!!!!

Interesting - been playing Sonic Wings 2 lately, and after haplessly attempting to "conserve ammo" ala Metal Slug (womp womp!), I was wondering if any of the Video System shooters went with ammo rather than time limits. Given Turbo Force's reputation I'm guessing this isn't the favour I might expect.

Thanks for the answers. I'll have to give Turbo Force a try one day.

Whenever I try to run eXceed 3rd in fullscreen with desktop set to portrait orientation I get an immediate error but it works fine in landscape orientation. Any idea how to fix it?

How big are the hitboxes of the bullets in Mushihimesama?
It seems to me that only the center of a big bullet would kill you.

Is there a genre name that Hibachi's standard DOJ theme fits right into? That's her best theme to me and I'd love to know if theres other songs out there similar.

That's about the usual for these games. Cave's at least. It's also why smaller bullets are so much scarier because there's no room for error during dense patterns of them as opposed to bigger ones.
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Posted this in the Psyvariar Delta thread, but that seems to be dormant:
Psyvariar Delta is now nowhere to be found on the US Playstation Store. The game itself simply doesn't show up at all when searching the store, and there doesn't seem to be any way to purchase it digitally. Additionally, I recently got a physical copy and now cannot purchase the DLC.
Has it been delisted already? Is it still up in other regions?

Nope. Not as far as a I know. Mind you I've only played the DC version.SAM wrote:In Under Defeat you are give a choose of two heli to choose form at start, Red or Green for 1P.
A side for the color, are there any differences?
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

What are the best shmups on Steam, especially stuff that's on sale now? I already bought Shiki 1 and Mushi but I was thinking of some others before the Golden Week sale is over.

Do you need to use the default settings to upload scores in Deathsmiles (Steam ver)?
Also, what are the exact differences between "Arcade" mode and "Normal" mode?

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC "Arcade" uses the original low-res graphics and requires you to move up a difficulty level every couple stages, while "Normal" touches up the visuals and lets you stay on lower levels up 'til the last stage if you want. At least I think that's how it worked on the 360 edition.Arthandas wrote:Also, what are the exact differences between "Arcade" mode and "Normal" mode?
Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Yes, that's definitely the case. So basically both modes are more or less the same gameplay wise?BulletMagnet wrote:"Arcade" uses the original low-res graphics and requires you to move up a difficulty level every couple stages, while "Normal" touches up the visuals and lets you stay on lower levels up 'til the last stage if you want.

If memory serves, yes (though there might be a bit of difference slowdown-wise, someone more qualified would have to back me up on that); if you want something that diverges more from the "base" game go for 1.1 or Mega Black Label.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
BulletMagnet is correct. Like other CAVE releases for the XB360 like Mushihimesama Futari the game includes a version with the original artwork, and one with the upscaled HD artwork. There is a gameplay difference between them in Deathsmiles, which is for some reason the HD version allows you to pick the same difficulty for the A and B side stages multiple times (like all level 1), whereas in the original arcade ver you can't pick level 1 and 2 multiple times for the top and bottom set of levels.

Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread
Okay here is one (and I'm probably going to look a numb nuts for asking this) I've been playing a lot of The Raiden Project on the PS1 after quite a hiatus and something is driving me mad - are there requirements you need to satisfy in which to make to car which you shoot for points, appear on the ruined highway on level two of Raiden 1?
Last time I put a serious amount of time into Raiden it would show up like 75% of the time (I assumed it was just random) but this time I've only ever got it to show up once in a weeks worth of play, which makes me think there is a hidden place to shoot or something, which I've just got lucky with in the past.
Can't find a thing about it online, though I'm sure its common knowledge
