All credit to RedLetterMedia's Doctor Sleep/Parasite review for that one. Apparently it blew up so hard he de-listed it, then re-listed it to make the most of his 15mins.

But yes, I do enjoy the internet peoples. Image Gives even Messrs Lynch, Cronenberg and Wiseau a hard run for their money! Sonic movie? More like Christian Weston Chandler's Adult Chronicles Episode XLMCVII!

Frozen 2:. **1/2

The latest in a long line of unnecessary Disney cash-in sequels. Seriously lacking in the plot department (there's no real antagonist and the "shocking revelations" aren't particularly shocking either.) For some reason they decided to turn Olaf into an incredibly annoying Sheldon Cooper type know-it-all. Throw in a few Oscar bait songs and the whole thing can be safely skipped.

Dead Ringers

The idea that maybe identical twins are indeed special insomuch that they're together before birth, sharing, developing, depending is now dispelled by this. What seems to be a partnership by brothers in blood is in truth parasitical in life. One outgrows the other in ambition, the other spirals down the drain, thanks to a relationship other than the dear brother. The gal called the outcome depressing. I found it to be haunting. That Irons. I utterly believed it.

Masterful double play as P1: i'm shy w/girlz rofl ;-; and P2: PROFESSOR BOOTYMAYNE McSHAGGERFORD, ESQ

Quality Cronenberg, in a sense more insidiously body-horrific than his outright monster mashes (and I don't just mean the nightmare sequence!).

Right.
Upon viewing I felt it as a personal drama. After credits roll I caught up with it. Cardinal red, new metal tools, "mutant women". Creeped out to my stomach.
Fantastic.

The Wicker Man (1973) - Classic and thoroughly enjoyable even after all these years, although I do wonder how much of it was intended as anti-pagan propaganda, or maybe some pagan cults are really that nutty. I will never know for sure. I am open to the philosophies regarding death and the non-duality of it all, just as long as you don't plan on tying my umbilical chord to a tree

Watched Sonic the Hedgehog. Very fun movie and better than I was expecting it to be. Nice to see references to Sonic cartoons and memes too. I also liked Jim Carrey as Robotnik more than I was expecting to. His Robotnik is totally insane.

The Stepford Wives

The 1973 original. I've seen the 2004 Frank Oz adaptation, and I remember distinctly how with all that famous faces it had no pull or push, no bite nor teeth. But I learned what is meant by the sheer mention of Stepford. When I got the chance of seeing the 70s film I got really curious how it was done then. I feel it's very overlooked for reasons I don't know. The gal commented that it feels like a "summer-movie", meaning that it's light and bright for most of it's length. Broken with the mandated spots of weirdness. It gets into some trope at the ending, with thunder, rain, and a dark mansion. But nobody is going to cry "HAIL SATAN!" at the climax. No. It's more subdued. The Creepy Geeks. "Why?", as if the word was never considered. What a silly question, toots. Because. We. Can. You've born our heirs. You're done. Hey fellas, who here wants a bimbo? It cleans the house, too! Let's grow old and stay juvenile. It's nooner-time!

The Brood

A first-time delight. So horror that it's rare fun. I suspect that made by any other hands peeps would now laugh at the subject matter. "Run a-hole! Them's the killer dwarfs! Hahaha." But not then and not some 40 years later. The director is out to kill with weirdness from the very heart. The score is armed and the strings are set to lethal. What gorgeous haircuts in all this madness. I watched the Second Sight DVD from 2013, which has sharp picture quality that made it all more endearing to me. That 70s cool. Wow.

Long Weekend (1978)

I saw this when I was a kid and it kind of screwed me up for a while. It's one of those films that has an oppressive feeling throughout.

A couple who's marriage is going down the toilet go on a camping trip in the wilds of Australia and nature isn't having it. Is what happens to them an allegory for the marriage, or is it an ozploitation film with nature getting revenge on a couple of fuckwits? Neither character is at all likeable (though the fella is funny sometimes), and I think this is why the film is so effective.

Highlights include an dead sea cow that the guy shot after thinking it was a shark. It's carcass rots on the beach and at night they can hear a baby screaming which they think is the sea cow's pup. The woman has recently had an abortion and she has a hard time dealing with this wailing. The next morning, the carcass has moved up the beach towards their camp, though its still apparently dead...

Creepy as fuck, intelligently made and it works on different levels.

Rollercoaster (1977)

To get Long Weekend out if my skull I watched this. Timothy Bottoms is a nut job who blackmails the owners of large funparks in the US by blowing up rollercoasters. George Segal is a safety inspector who is on the case. Richard Widmark frowns and sweats his way through exclaiming Jesus Christ a lot.

It's great, has that sunny 70's Americana thing going on. A lot of it was shot at Magic Mountain and Sparks make an appearance singing Big Boy. It was supposed to be the big hit of 1977, but got buried by Star Wars.

I always liked George Segal. Weird career. He was great in a film called Blume in Love (which I tracked down because it's featured in Eyes Wide Shut - if Kubrick put it in his movie he must've been a fan). In this he is trying to quit smoking - a running gag, is divorced, has a kid - a young Helen Hunt, and styles his hair with a hot comb.

In all the years I've been in this forum I've probably posted about these films before. I have a five year supply of films and end up rewatching everything.

Shivers: Date-rape simulation. They came within and are without. Very civilized ending.

Ed Wood: Angora is Satan's satin. It is to be expected that Disney will silently alter or completely erase it, since the conflict with current Family Cooperation guidelines.

Apocalypse Now Redux: Adventures of silly green men, from the respective perspectives of a striped tiger, a puppy love dog, a chopped up bull, and a hidden river tortoise. Narration VO is campfire-story time of world-famous town drunk quality.

Sunset Boulevard: Colourless with primary focus on whites. VO narration invalid due to physical implausibility. The dead don't narrate.

I saw an advertisement for it in a pet shop I was passing. Quite the smart way of letting me know it was a thing (I would likely remain clueless otherwise).

I'm gonna rewatch Alien and Aliens soon, been a long time since I watched both movies. There is one minor gripe I have with Alien if I remember correctly:
Spoiler
The full reveal shot of the Xenomorph when he trapped into space, it looks like a life-sized 10 year old human, looks smol. And the music during this "battle" was interrupting the tension, would've been better with no music playing at all.

Cannonball: **

1976 David Carradine film based on the illegal cross-country "Cannonball Run" races. Some good car chase and stunt action, but it eventually devolves into Michael Bay level nonsense as cars just start exploding for no good reason (case in point.) I haven't seen it, but I've heard that the Burt Reynolds Canonball Run movie that came out a couple of years later is supposed to be much better.

To Live "Huozhe"

9/10

This really was the golden age of Chinese cinema. Well, Hong Kong cinema I guess is more accurate as this movie was banned in mainland China in advance of the release in 1994. This is a great movie and I highly recommend it.

Onward: ***1/2

Probably a mid-tier Pixar movie, but gains a lot more meaning when you learn that the story behind it is based on the director's real life experience (director Dan Scanlan and his older brother lost their father at a young age, similar to protagonists Ian and Barley in the film.) The animation feels a bit too plasticky at times and doesn't feel like it's quite up to Pixar's usual standards, but even most of Pixar's lesser movies are better quality than what a lot of the studios are putting out in terms of animation now.

This film might end up being the biggest victim of the current health crisis that shut down the theaters in the middle of its run, but it's definitely worth a look if you have Disney+ (where it ended up when it should still be in theaters. )

I watched Onibaba tonight. Nice drama about three peasants trying to deal with samurai war as well as their own interpersonal conflict, a drama that slowly turns into horror. Excellent atmosphere throughout.

Made it to my top 50 horror list, but always looking for more horrors of these kinds.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (D+80 V2.0)
Everyone here has seen the movie so no real reason to comment on it itself. If you're curious how the Project 4K80 release will eventually look, then you should pick up this version. Started out using webrips of the D+ versions mixed with material from the 4K80 release that's in the works, this is impressive. Version 2.0 is based off the recently released physical UHD version of the movie. Since only Reel 1 is completely cleaned, for shots he needed the master files for, he had to do his own cleaning and reworking to get them to seamlessly fit in. I couldn't tell what came from the film reels and came from the UHD Blu Ray and the color regrade looks impressive too. Certainly the best this movie has ever looked.

Does this stip out the "special edition" garbage? Like The Emperor telling Vader that Luke is his son way before the big reveal moment?
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

It is intended to be original in all respects, with only minor things from the UHD left in. So no, that crap is not in there. The creator does see a lot of flaws and will probably update it once again, but for his first version using the UHD physical release, it looks amazing.

The Living Daylights: ***

Since it appears that all of the James Bond movies except the Daniel Craig ones (which I've never been a huge fan of) are currently available on Amazon Prime Video, I'll probably end up watching or rewatching a few of these. This is the first of the two Timothy Dalton movies (the other one being Licence to Kill) and probably the weaker of the two. It feels a bit like they were trying to move away from the campiness of the Roger Moore Bond, but not too far, as a decent amount of it is still there. As you'd expect, you end up somewhere between the Moore films and the now incredibly dated faux slickness of the Brosnan ones (now those haven't aged well at all, but that's another story.) As is the case with most Bond films it has some good action and stunt work, but the plot felt pretty weak, and the ending felt like an excuse to tie up loose ends that shouldn't have been there.
