The mark of a good company is when at least middle management falls on the sword as does staff. Happens but not common. I was laid off at the end of the year and only senior engineers were canned. Not one in management got the axe, and they were indeed pricey. But they did the next best thing -- the pricey employees that are ideally leading by example, just not by title.orange808 wrote: Somebody earlier in the thread mentioned the "expensive" management getting the axe in cost clipping. lmao No. That's not how it works. It's cute that you think so.

Within the context of what I'm saying, it's pretty clear I'm talking about Congress, since they passed a half assed (though still much needed) stimulus. I've made the point many times on this forum that the government is not omnipotent and is in many ways self contradictory. I've referred to it as the six headed hydra that attacks itself more than its surroundings. But keep misrepresenting me, like most everyone else here does.... the fact that you refer to it as "the government" as if it's some singular, omnipotent entity that can swing around some magic wand drives that point home. That's hardly news though.

Still trending with last year and right in line with projections. Let me know when the big spike in deaths shows up.
We could have bought plenty of delivered meals, targeted unemployment, home nurses, temporary care facilities, and respirators for sick or quarantined "at risk" people with what we're throwing away on the expensive (yet still massively undersized and inept) stimulus spending.
Now, that more are without employment, maybe we can finally start asking for some real information instead of cherry-picked scare stories.
Is this a good use of our resources?

Bleuagh, congress isn't hard to understand. It's owned by ~15 people (largely the same ~15 people who own all the other countries in our alliance - the faces are different but the bosses are the same).
The function of the congress critters is to rubberstamp the papers their employers put in front of them and distract dumb people and repulse normal people with their clownish antics on television. While using their free time to use their insider knowledge to profit off stocks and do non-consensual sex stuff to interns.
The democrats obviously get a better deal in this arrangement - they protect the republicans, lose their elections, then have a 2 to 6 year vacation to do as much drugs and sex stuff as they want. Just a clear schedule for whatever. In such an arrangement, the republicans are both dependent on and subservient to the democrats, as they need them to be able to win, and then have to do much more rubberstamping and congress-sitting.
....
As for the current plague, reported deaths in the USA has been above +30% daily for the past week. At +30% over the next week, that's 929 * 1.3 ^ 7 - 929 = 4900.3372293 additional deaths a week from now. A month at +30% would be um.... over 2 million, but that's not how it spreads in the physical world obviously.

Re: COVID-19 virus
We'll check the US numbers in a month of two.
Guess what? We'll be right in line with current overall death trend and still right in line with UN projections that were made last year. There won't be a million extra deaths.
Most deaths don't involve a trip to the morgue or a long stay at the hospital. New York's struggles are predictable. Seems like it would have been more sensible to mobilize to handle the additional work than to shut everything down.
When the numbers shake out, you'll be asking why we did this.
Very sick or very wealthy people are the only ones getting tested. The total cases are underreported.

No, it'll take 18 months to surpass 1 million deaths, not a month.
And then when the ozone layer isn't ripped open you'll scratch your head and wonder why we banned CFCs, everything is fine.

There will never ever be a million more deaths than UN projections from last year (before the outbreak) in the US from this disease.
Nice self-fulfilling prophesy. You chide neoliberals for using that particular brand of thinking. Interesting.
Going to stop, look at the numbers, and consider you might be wrong?
Someday you might. Obviously, I'm not the messenger that will reach you.
Italy failed to react. You can't tell me the reaction worked there and changed the outcome. The outcome there is exactly what the effect of this is. The biggest threat is the strain on hospitals--and that could potentially hurt our ability to treat people that can be saved.
We could address that issue without this silly quarantine.
We have over-reacted in a huge way. We are also burning our trust capital with people and hurting our future ability to respond to a real crisis.

Re: COVID-19 virus
We've discussed the nut test before. Nothing is an absolute certainty, especially stuff like this. I could be wrong, you could be wrong. My assumption was between +250,000 new deaths to +3,000,000 new deaths (because of American exceptionalism) as being the most likely outcome. Further toward the former than the later, but I'm often impressed by my country in new ways every year. There will never ever be a million more deaths than UN projections from last year (before the outbreak) in the US from this disease.

The pyramids were built by the working class - fairly respected craftsman that would have been held in higher esteem than we hold carpenters today. It was extraordinarily labor intensive, as copper tools had to be repaired and replaced constantly. It would be the example of a first major make-work jobs program (also known as job welfare, a job that would not naturally exist in a free market) mandated by the government.XtraSmiley wrote:LOL, wow what a crazy world view! And yes, it is a crazy world we live in. You know we have quid-pro-quo bribes, that's publicly known information. You know ALEC and others write, word for word, much of our legislation, that's publicly known information. You know congress is allowed to trade stocks while having privileged information (and obviously more than a little power collectively to adjust the profitability of said stocks), that's publicly known information.
Please point out where politicians are not funded by, and paid millions of dollars by private interests (almost all of which are collectively owned by... literally a handful of billionaires.). And why I am "crazy" for believing that they are, or for believing that you can own a company by holding a majority of its stock. Thank you.

I'm going to be very frank with you: nobody outside of a select few are qualified to say that. The people in power have more knowledge at their fingertips than the vast majority of people realize. My time spent working in SCIFs, five years to be exact, gave me a taste of what they know. I'm still considered a peon to them, albeit a reliable one, and the amount of information I was exposed to was downright staggering.
It was obvious to a bunch of obsessive weirdos on Twitter that this pandemic was going to hit the US and how back in January. That means the people whose job it is to keep an eye on these things knew well before that. That means that the ruling class knew, and decided to get things arranged behind the scenes while keeping normal economic activity online for as long as possible. Note all the CEOs stepping down and all the insider trading that's occurred over the past few months. This isn't happening for no reason. The most likely scenario as I see it is that they know more about this virus than the general public does; perhaps not by much, but enough to have them scared shitless.
Make no mistake: this is the single largest crisis of legitimacy the postwar system has ever faced, and they know it. This virus has managed to do more to close borders, restrict trade, and reform work culture over the past few weeks than any political movement has over the past few decades. When it comes to protecting you and I from the consequences of globalism, they don't care. But when it can hit them as well? Time to pull up the drawbridges and bunker down.
"Back to normal" isn't going to happen. Nobody that's been working from home is going to want to go back to miserable commutes to and from an office, especially when they get things done quicker and easier without one. People are going to realize how amazing the opportunity to work from home is and start working two, three, or maybe even more jobs at once. You're witnessing the collapse of everything we've been told was "necessary" in real time, so with that in mind, I ask: do you still think they're overreacting?

This board's been the only place where I've been able to read some positive news, so I hope the notion of China and Korea being out of the woods is the light at the end of the tunnel for us. I'm literally surrounded by it at work(911), so I'll take all the optimism I can get.

You mean the administration that not only eliminated the NSC's pandemic response team but, unless something's changed, is still planning to cut both the CDC and infectious disease rapid response fund in its upcoming budget? No worries, it's got its priorities straight.MJR wrote:I hope that when this is over, government will understand the importance of your work and raise your salary.

I was thinking of including recent tweet of Bernie proposing an extra hazard pay to workers who are performing essential public service, but it would have only lead to people pointing out that it "probably will never get through". Maybe not. But I think you need to keep yourself optimistic. Or you can pass your time thinking on if you can get extra pay by volunteering to burn corpses when 2 million people are dead, you are out of job and about to lose your home.

Not saying the US handled it well either. It was handled like absolute shit. Trump was warned to take it seriously in January and didn't. People partied on spring break and mardi gras... Honestly lots of people should be in trouble for how this was handled once it's done but we know that isn't happening.

USA and the UK were lax about it. The entire fiasco has been one big calamity. But, you know, the UK politicians will tell us all a story of how amazing they are, people will vote for them and it will be as though nothing ever happened because no one bothers to remember anything these days.
Glad to hell that I am not having to suffer the UK's government with all their lax tossery antics.

Im expecting that soon, people will crave for human flesh. anytime now
