Man, I can picture it: the fuckin' gaijin alarm. They have a network. If you're even so much as sniffed within a mile of the arcade they call in the pros, just to fuck with your head. Every morning, they have a shift coming in dropping a score on each cab. And it all looks so natural, like they just strolled in. There's the girl annihilating a false sense of male self-esteem you didn't even know about and a guy who looks like a fashion model looping Ketsui in between hot sessions of sunday morning squishy with his model girlfriend. You were LUCKY they didn't have the pre-schoolers there accidentally 1CCing games they can't even spell the names of or you'd have thrown yourself in front of the next car!
It's called "demoralize the foreign threat".
Thanks for the thread. Intended or not, that was a fun read. Too horrible not to be a nightmare. I really can picture it.

You forgot the most important part : shopstick training. Do it anywhere: at the restaurant while eating; at home while trying to catch flies; in the bathroom while whipping your a$$. your shooter skills will improve tremendously little grasshopper.NTSC-J wrote: Seriously, wtf. I've been in Japan for a little over a month, I've been drinking the water, eating the sushi, and nothing yet. I know the answer is practice, strategy sharing, blah blah...but come on, it's not even funny anymore. What's the trick.

Actually it was more of a response to the months of anticipation and gushing for some game to be ported then it comes out and gets a week of attention before getting dropped. And it was a brilliant thread: everyone got involved and was pissed and offended, went up to like 5 pages. Besides, I hear you crabbing about that mentality more than anyone.Randorama wrote:Ah, and the always charming " why people on this forum suck at shmups?" Or whatever was that thread of yours.
At least Rob appreciates my finely tuned message board craftsmanship. Better than wading through post after post of: "I became a Cave STG. It is good.
Re: more amateur arcades. Luckily, HEY is the only place I've seen where people give a shit about shooters, so pretty much any other place with the games is good to practice. My favorite spot has a number of Cave games for cheap and no one is ever playing them. I can play Ketsui without shame.

Yeah, I guess my post today on Motion Induced Blindness, which implies a reason why Japanese players are better, why 29" monitors are better for shmupping, and what could be the cause of ADD in shmuppers, was just no match for this mentally stimulating thread of "lets bash NTSC-J".cigsthecat wrote:It's still the most interesting/ entertaining read on the front page.
I really lost a lot of respect for this board.

Hey, I was planning to read that and give it my full attention AFTER my morning coffeeDave_K. wrote:Yeah, I guess my post today on Motion Induced Blindness, which implies a reason why Japanese players are better, why 29" monitors are better for shmupping, and what could be the cause of ADD in shmuppers, was just no match for this mentally stimulating thread of "lets bash NTSC-J".cigsthecat wrote:It's still the most interesting/ entertaining read on the front page.

And to everyone who moans about this being the gazillionth rerun of the shooter god topic, it isn't, not really. Where's your sense of humour? I doubt NTSC-J is really asking himself that fundamental question, he just ran into an hilariously demoralizing moment of shmuppery. It's tragic, but so is all real life comedy. If only all topic reruns had the decency to incorporate such irony and humour (even unintentionally) .

OK, so your thread is the most interesting, this is the most entertaining.Dave_K. wrote:Yeah, I guess my post today on Motion Induced Blindness, which implies a reason why Japanese players are better, why 29" monitors are better for shmupping, and what could be the cause of ADD in shmuppers, was just no match for this mentally stimulating thread of "lets bash NTSC-J".cigsthecat wrote:It's still the most interesting/ entertaining read on the front page.

I officially complain about your complain about my complain then!icycalm wrote:I would like to officially complain about Randorama complaining about recurring threads. I haven't been here that long but it's already getting to me.
What i was complaining about though?

Beside that, this is the first time in months i bother to check the threads and, lo and behold, the last time there was a similar thread. I had a deja-vu feeling so i couldn't help but bitching

Well, the point is, there are no useless threads.GaijinPunch wrote:If people want to designate something as a useless thread, surely there are hundreds more better candidates than this one.
Some of them might be useless to you, others might be useless to me, but there are no universally useless threads. Because they have to be useful to at least 1 person: the guy who started them.
If you whine about threads you find useless, then you are disrespecting the person who started them, as well as trying to force your opinion on everyone else. We all ignore many threads on a daily basis: we can easily ignore one or two more threads--it won't make any difference.
As for threads that are not merely "useless" but also recurring, surely their necessity must be obvious by now. This forum is not a closed club. New members join every day. Just because a discussion has been had between 10 old-timers doesn't mean it shouldn't be had again between 10 new guys. They might have something new to say. Even if they don't, they sure as hell have the right to talk about whatever the fuck they feel like talking. If there are 2 people who want to have a discussion, then that is a discussion worth having.

To be fair, most people here are being reassuringly reasonable about it. "Have fun, first" is an idea I thought this forum had completely forgotten...Not bitter just annoyed by pointless threads, particularly those beating the dead horse that is "OMG the Japanese are shooting gods why should we lowly westerners even bother playing".

See, Bingo gets it. I was just sharing a memorable moment in shooter fandom. Some of you guys need to chill the fuck out. Makes for some funny threads tho, I'm glad I can stir such controversy without even trying. Good question, I'd like to know too. When I was there I only saw people doing quite perfect gaming. And when I played Guilty Gear XX, some curious folks walked past, but they only glanced the screen for a nanosecond and it was enough for them to detect that I'm making small mistakes, and am therefore just an amateur, so they immediately lost interest and walked away. And I thought I was good, got to the last boss with my first try, kind of depressing :/Rob wrote: I have a question for the man in Japan. Was anyone there learning any games (were you just noticing the masters?). Is there a lesser arcade where they go to build up the skills and save them for the main arena? I would suck at any game I'm decent at if I thought someone was watching.
NTSC-J, what was that arcade you were talking about, and where is it located? I'm heading for the far east tomorrow and will be hitting the Tokyo arcades also. GaijinPunch, what's your favorite arcade there and where can I find it? Thanks..

See it this way: Forum threads are like movies. The remakes never have the same charm as the originals. True, but i'm getting old and fogey, i will soon reminisce about the silly things of my youth as "golden moments", instantly removing all the curses said during said moments. I bet i will even say "oh, how good was playing [insert game name here] !" selectively removing all moments of pure rage i had when playing itHerr Schatten wrote: See it this way: Forum threads are like movies. ~I have a question for the man in Japan. Was anyone there learning any games (were you just noticing the masters?). Is there a lesser arcade where they go to build up the skills and save them for the main arena?~
Yes. Tuesday I was at Hey for 2 or 3 hours, I don't remember, and there was one guy who was already there when I arrived, and was still there when I left. Inbetween he would idly 2-all ketsui, ultra mushi and some other stuff. Then on friday I was at the 50 yen place at Shibuya GP mentioned, and WTF, that guy is there again. Same story, I stayed for 2 hours, he was already there and still there when I left. So I think the answer is "yes", and to NTSC-J : seriously don't underestimate just how much freaking time these guys put into this.
Oh yeah and to preempt the joke, yes I usually can tell Japanese apart
Edit: and as for the learning part : another guy spent those 2 hours by playing ESPGaluda2, the catch being that he would restart as soon as he died. Even if he was already pretty far and had like 4 or 5 more lives in stock
I already feel itchy about doing that on PS2 (it has to be fun after all, right), never mind when it's actually costing money. Dedicated, I tell ya.
