Sonic the Hedgehog: ***

Not a bad movie overall (certainly could have been a lot worse, judging from the reaction to the first trailer) but it's pretty clear that the writers' experience with Sonic the Hedgehog as a character consisted entirely of playing through about half of Green Hill Zone Act 1 on a Genesis demo unit at the local Sears in 1991. You probably could have plugged in just about any generic superhero in place of Sonic and any generic villain in place of Robotnik (which probably would have improved the movie by getting rid of Jim Carrey's nails-on-chalkboard level performance) and gotten basically the same movie out of this. Will probably do well enough to warrant a disappointing sequel a couple of years down the road.

Soapdish: ***

Comedy from 1991 about a daytime soap opera that turns out to have more drama on the set than on the show. Sally Field plays Celeste Talbert, an aging star on a daytime soap opera, while a younger actress conspires with one of the writers (Robert Downey Jr.) to get her written off the show so she can be the star. All of the attempts to do so backfire, Over time, the on-set drama overshadows the actual soap opera when Jeffrey Anderson (Kevin Kline) is brought back to the show after being fired many years ago, and it turns out that Celeste's "niece" (Elizabeth Shue) who happened to show up on the set one day, is their daughter out of the affair that resulted in Anderson's ousting from the show. Overall a decent little mindless flick with lots of scenery chewing melodrama to go around, although the ending may be problematic for modern audiences. Even so, I'd recommend John Candy's Delirious as a better example of this type of thing.

Alice and the Mayor

A remarkably original quasi-comedy about modern politics and ecological collapse.

Alice, a young philosopher, returns from abroad for a peculiar job in her native Lyon: "idea advisor" for the severely burned-out mayor, a big shot of the Socialist party (Fabrice Luchini, very impressive).

A bit of satire, a lot of realistic representation of modern political activity, some love interests, but above all troubled people talking about how we are all doomed and traditional concerns for economic growth etc. are futile.
Typical comedy techniques like characters who talk too much and too well are repurposed from being funny to serious political reflection and heartfelt portrayal of sad and emotionally wounded people and groups.

The Dead Zone

Man, it just connected the dotdotdots that this film is probably the only one I've seen to date where Chris Walken is the undisputable lead. I couldn't take my eyes off his performance. Yeah, I know The Deer Hunter, but this is the Chris Walken Show. He's vulnerable. Next he's nostalgic. Oh, look he is wearing a collar like a tacky Dracula cape. That's adorable! He's tormented, no wait, he's discovered some optimism. He's having a horrendous vision. He's in sweat and the bed he's lying in is actually on fire! He's covering his tear-stained face. If he had a vision where he is becoming the pope blessing a heathen nation, I wouldn't have objected! When the film started I was about to scoff: THE NAME OF THE PRODUCER FIRST, followed by the title in plain and meek font I felt a rise to exclaim immediately. But then it breathes and builds a mosaic of the title while introducing a mood with the first paces of the musical theme. I was duped, which was well played.

Bad Boys for Life

Bad films are rarely completely bad. This one has mostly reasonable and/or spectacular (albeit seriously over the top) action scenes, which cannot help against bad characters, bad story and bad plot holes.

Summary: our heroes approach middle age, with Mike (Will Smith) intending to remain a bachelor hero cop forever and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) intending to retire because he has a grandson. Meanwhile, a young and competent Mexican gangster invades Miami, and action grinds to a halt because Marcus wants to stay retired and refrain from violence while Mike SPOILER.
The exceptional amount of ambivalence that has been built up is then dismantled and ridiculed as Mike progressively drags Marcus back to action, with the help of some picturesque colleagues. After Mike discovers a carefully non-anticipated bad plot twist
Spoiler
too cringeworthy to tell, and too pointless to hear
the whole team goes to Mexico City (unofficially, of course) for a long old school showdown with the whole drug cartel. Conforming to recent bad film tradition, a bad sequel hook adds insult to injury just when the bad ending seems to have run its course.

Bad acting (Martin Lawrence looks like he doesn't want to be there) and bad direction, with major errors (e.g. cops instantly changing clothes during a chase and bulletproof people ignoring chest wounds) complement bad writing. Bad boys indeed, all of them!

Ford v. Ferrari: ***1/2

Dramatic retelling of the story behind the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race, where Ford threw gobs of money at a race team mostly to show up Enzo Ferrari after he insulted the Ford executives (to be honest he had a point on that one. ) Definitely one of the best auto racing movies ever made, but for the most part that's a pretty low bar. Ultimately, it seems like the type of movie best watched in small chunks and YouTube clips, lest you realize that it's basically asking you to root for the bad guys.

Sonic The Hedgehog is everything a family-oriented movie based on a video game property should be. It's funny, charming, and faithful to its source material. I'm usually not too keen on Jim Carrey's non-dramatic roles, but I loved every scene he was in. I loved all the characters, actually. I forgot how much I liked James Marsden as an actor. Not all of the jokes were funny, but none of them made me groan or roll my eyes. The references to the video games were clever and never felt forced. This is easily one of the better video game movies that exist and it made me smile from start to finish.
There was a time, in the era of great chaos, when the Earth and the moon were at war with each other. A daredevil from the moon piloted a bizarre aircraft. It was feared, and because of its shape, called... Einhander.

jojo rabbit: a coming of age comedy movie about a wimpy hitler youth sounds rife for relevant political satire and some good laughs, but it ends up telling a completely toothless nothing story with fuck all to say about anything. hitler's bad, i guess. got 'em! brave thing to do in 2020. scarlet johansson collects another paycheck for being in another marvel movie.

love and pop: hideaki anno proves an incredible understanding of how voyeurism in modern society operates and demonstrates an empathy for the women subjects of this film in a way that dispels a lot of faint & lingering discomforts i had about the guy. a little uncomfortable, but so fun in its shooting that it's quite the watch.

joker: guy who did the hangover movies thinks he's grown a huge dick and has something to say and rips off a couple scorsese films (sometimes brazenly) while the talented joaquin phoenix does his best to make you pretend he's being directed by someone competent. stupidly obsessed with adding in batman canon elements rather either to try and legitimize itself or leave a mark, i don't know which is more sad. remarkably useless and uninteresting.

Had a long flight, so....

Ad Astra
Had heard some bad things about this one. It definitely has some redeeming qualities but almost all of them are in the first half. I'm all for thinking big, but a lot of it was too far fetched. Some nice cinematography though.

Booksmart
This was towards the end of the flight and my brain needed something very easy. This delivered. I knew it would have some dumb shit in it, but it didn't take the whole "girl power" thing to cringe worthy heights, and I think it even handled it pretty well. Soundtrack was great. Even the "new" songs that are definitely not my bag fit.

Bought some DVDs and a Blu-ray from a local K-Mart that had a closing sale. Two of them were surprisingly snapper case DVDs, meaning they were likely old stocks from the late 90s back when DVDs was a new media

The Proposition (2005) - A cowboy movie set and filmed in Australia that centers around the middle sibling of three outlaw brothers who is forced to hunt down the elder of the trio by an authority figure in order to save the mentally-handicapped younger one from execution. Most of the focus on the movie is actually on the Captain who is holding the younger brother prisoner, as he tries to shield his wife from all the horrors happening around them in a vain attempt to give her some semblance of a normal civilized life. Not a bad movie, even if it's not particularly original.

Hurlyburly (1998) - The official plot synopsis summarizes the movie as "the intersecting lives of several Hollywood players and wannabes, whose dysfunctional personal lives are more interesting than anything they’re peddling to the studios". If their lives as depicted in this movie are more interesting than the movies they're pitching, I don't want to imagine what kind of boring shit the characters in the movie are actually peddling. Basically the movie is just Sean Penn as a cokehead bitching and whining about shit to his friends until the end and becoming way too needy with the people he's involved with.

The Player (1992) - Another movie involving movie people, but this one is not too bad. A movie executive starts receiving threatening letters from a former screenplay writer he somehow wronged in the past and tries to get into the bottom of things, only to get into a series of mishaps. Not going to say the plot beyond that, but the ending had a pretty clever twist.

Videodrome

What to write and not to drivel? That's where cinema is alive. Layers and subtleties so visceral that when tried to be articulated lose power immediatly. Rad make-up and prosthetics effects. A film I cannot imagine in another era defining it in excentricities and foreshadowing many things with eerie accurancy without exact science using a dreamscape. You have to see it for yourself. No substitude available. I watched the Arrow Films release which features welcome special content.

Videodrome is top-tier, I agree. Really sticks with you. What a grimy, sleazy movie, wrapped up in some trippy science-fiction and hallucinations. Cancer-gun needs to be put in a shmup, or fps, or something!

I saw The Gentlemen in San Francisco. My buddy out there is a big Guy Ritchie fan. I haven't seen any of his movies so I can't compare (reviews seem to indicate it's a bit of well-trodden territory for him). Funny to see a gangster movie about vicious and ruthless... marijuana dealers. It's like I'm back in the 80s. On its own, it's decent, light entertainment with a fast and loose sense of style and panache. Hugh Grant of all actors steals the show as a slimy reporter narrating the whole movie. Lots of people having fun, with some pretty visceral violence. The only problem is that it comes a little unhinged at the end with too many gotchas, twists, and an out-of-left-field... uh, rape threat (get to the rape-bomb before it goes off! A race against time!). It was out of said antagonists, uh, motivations given the circumstances.

I'll also chock this up to another case of English accents making things more enjoyable.

I've been watching a bunch of stuff recently, but the one that I wanted to talk about here was Jason and the Argonauts (1963). Man, what a great movie. I hadn't seen it for a number of years and this was my first time watching it in HD. Ray Harryhausen was perhaps at his pinnacle here, and the entire movie is filled with great special effects and crazy stopmotion setpieces with an unprecedented level of interaction with the human actors. The legendary skeleton sequence is doubtless the standout, but there are a whole bunch of creative and visually interesting sequences throughout that are a joy to behold.

Aside from the special effects, the movie is just a really great adventure film full stop, with memorable characters, moments of wit and drama, and a surprisingly high production value including great costume design and wonderful location shooting in Italy. The vast majority of current films in this genre today can't stand up to the beautiful natural locations in this film.

I've loved 1981's Clash of the Titans since I was a kid, but watching Jason now it's easy to see how indebted the later film is to the earlier one, and honestly the campy humor and lesser production values don't do Clash many favors in retrospect. It's still a marvelous movie in a lot of ways, but I think Argonauts stands the test of time better as an overall better made, more entertaining movie.

The Color of Money

I never laughed so hard in any Scorsese picture. Does this movie count as a silly 80s flick? Cruise is so goofy that I imagine he did it to make it stick against his awe of Newman. "Waddaya got in there?" Scary-boyish-Tom-smile-MarkI: "Doom!" About half-length it turns to reverse the dynamic and it becomes more centered around Newman's performance. I'm informed the whole thing works as a sequel to The Hustler, and precisely that makes me want to pick that one up. I'm glad they avoided and pointed out how tacky it would be if there were a love triangle in it. Yeah, the babe's got it, but don't gimme that. Stick to sticks and balls, please. Cheers!

Predator

Haven't seen it in years, and I wasn't sure going in how I would perceive it now at 43. I've had mixed results going back. Ghostbusters for instance is still wonderful by all accounts, some others? Not so much.

Happy to say it has aged really really well. Couple of cringe worthy one liners (stick around, you got time to duck), and the fight at the end wasn't exactly choreographed by Hong Kong's finest but in all seriousness these are very minor complaints.

Good cast, fun premise (Alien in the jungle with a little more action), and I liked how they slowly revealed what Predator looked like.

Would watch again without hesitation.

Have you watched the Sinbad films? The 7th Voyage of Sinbad is so good. So many great monsters in the trilogy. Regarding the aforementioned, I'm a bit of the opposite as I like Clash a lot better, as I find Jason a bit too stuck in the 60's with its stiff acting and the absolutely horrible casting for Hercules. Obviously a superb film, and of course the skeleton sequence is to die for, but Clash just gets so many more points for me with how dark some of it is. The Medusa island sequence is one of my favorite things ever.

Actually just watched 7th Voyage tonight. Super good! The dragon vs. Cyclops fight was a highlight for sure, but the whole shrunken princess schtick is great too. I didn't mind the casting of Hercules in Argonauts at all, in fact I thought the interplay between him and the 'smart' character (who proves to be pretty boneheaded) was pretty charming. And don't get me wrong, I still love Clash, but I don't think the script-driven scenes hold up as well as those in Argonauts—the effects scenes largely do, though.

Some short reviews of movies I've watched recently.

Hugo - A kids film from Martin Scorcese of all people. Some nice visual effects, but didn't care much for the story.

Blue Velvet - The first David Lynch movie I've seen in full (not counting Dune). Really want to see more of his filmography now, especially the Twin Peaks franchise.

Parasite (기생중) - Deserving of the hype, but fuck Rotten Tomatoes for ruining Blu-ray covers with their stupid "Certified Fresh" shit and fuck movie studios who think they're relevant in any way.

Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Isle of Dog (犬ヶ島) - Wes Anderson does stop motion.

Oh, you lucky fuck. I think it goes w/o saying that Mulholland Drive is his magnum opus, so maybe save that for last? It is really amazing. However, Twin Peaks the return feels almost like a spiritual sequel to MD. Anywho, Lost Highway is great as well. Inland empire has it's moments but it's way out in left field (even for him) and is also in SD digital so yeah... there's that.

For Twin Peaks, you should understand what you're getting in to. For starters, it's dope as shit. However, note that the original TV series is basically the first iteration of current HBO quality TV. It was also an experiment of sorts which includes a LOT of different genres. Be prepared for some over the top, cheesy soap opera in the mix. Also note that season 2 kind of comes off the rails at a certain point (when Lynch left) and there's 6 (or 8 ) episodes you can skip and miss almost nothing. Despite the wonkiness, the 2 hour finale of season 2 is probably the best thing on broadcast TV ever... definitely for a major network. After that watch Fire Walk With Me which is amazeballs (I was one of the few that loved it when it came out) and definitely sets the tone for The Return which was an absolute power house. When you're done you can go see all of us scratching each other's balls all summer in the Lynch thread. Reddit as well had post after post of people peeling apart clues. My life was better then. Fuck... time to rewatch.

It was amusing marathonning Twin Peaks in release order (all OG tv, Fire Walk With Me, plus The Return) a few years ago. The stuff in TV season 2 really sticks out... but it's such an off-kilter series by nature, it actually didn't bother me much. Was more a "well that was different" when Lynch returned to get shit back in order.

Highly recommended. Can't pretend to be a theorycrafting superfan but I got lots of good feels and countless retroactive hints of my beloved, unashamedly Lynch-blagging KCET Silent Hill quartet.

I watched Parasite (2019) the other night. Great black satire, funny, unnerving and tragic. Beautifully shot throughout in both farcical and sombre modes.

Also, by total coincidence, watched The Wailing (2016), a Korean horror/drama that deliberately invokes classic Western and Eastern concepts, but hangs together so organically that it never feels like anything so tired as a "deconstruction." Rural town is plagued by a rash of inexplicable family murder/suicides, bumpkin cop gets roped in. Evenly unassuming and punishing horror, quite a long film but I recommend if you've a quiet evening to fill out.

I actually really enjoyed the use of digital in Inland Empire (shame about the SD, though). I feel like it was one of the first movies to explore the potential of digital as a medium—there's a shot near the middle where Laura Dern finds herself in a house with sunlight pouring in through white curtains. Lynch exposes the shot in such a way that the blown-out white fills the room in a really atmospheric and otherwordly way. You couldn't do that with film because the crush on the white end of the spectrum doesn't work the same way.

Huh, interesting about Inland Empire digital use, I never knew about the difference in format. I own the DVD extended cut, absolutely love it. I describe it to people as a film not just about people going crazy, but rather a film made with the purpose to make the viewer go crazy.

I feel like I should rewatch Lost Highway sometimes soon.

Some Kind of Wonderful - I know John Hughes isn't for everyone, for me this is one of his best screenplays. It's been several decades since I had last seen it, held up well nostalgia wise and the rocking Charlie Sexton song (Beat's so Lonely - Monster Mix) at the end... fantasic stuff.

I watched this a few months ago. Tried to get the GF on board but she wasn't having it. Watched it alone. It has held up well, although there's a few things maybe that didn't. And yes, as always w/ John Hughes, the soundtrack is fantastic. I wore the VHS tape out in junior high.
