Shmup Counterstop List

Post by ZPScissors »

So I've decided that I want to make a list of every shmup that's been counterstopped. The original post will most likely be incomplete and have many inaccuracies because I'm not familiar with every shmup ever made, but I'll try. Feel free to correct me when I get something wrong. I'll only be listing games that have been counterstopped by a human. This list will also include specific versions of games (for example, DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu v1.0) when a game has multiple versions, some of which have been counterstopped and some haven't. Also let me know if you have videos of counterstops for games or ships that don't have one on this list.

I define a counterstop as the game no longer counting the score at all. Things such as rollovers, crashes, or integer overflows don't count.

You missed Batsugun Special ver. and Dogyuun (the latter video doesn't actually show the counterstop but shows how to set up the infinite milk).

I have a video for Battle Bakraid's original version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0MW7MRzEI0

There's probably a ton of console games with counterstops, e.g. Gradius III SFC and Recca.

Kiki Kaikai can be counterstopped, and so can Hyper Dyne Side Arms IIRC.

There's probably a huge amount of console games that can be counterstopped. This page has some good info that could be helpful.

Fascinating to learn that Capcom's Hyper Dyne Sidearms jamma pcb setup can be counter-stopped. The first time I came across it was at Marriott's Great America amusement park back in April of 1987 -- it garnered a huge audience around the Dynamo upright cab that hosted the Sidearms jamma pcb conversion kit indeed.

American Romstar arcade distro/licensee was the one whom handled the distribution and sale of the USA region version of Sidearms jamma conversion kits stateside back in 1987-1988 (they even did the distribution & sales of the USA region Twin Cobra jamma pcb kits as well).

The Guardian Legend for NES in both its main mode as well as its TGL Mode (the shmup segment only mode) can be counterstopped easily. Doing so however immediately crashes the game.

Life Force for NES also has a trivial counterstop (the Life Force one is very time-consuming and is done on a miniboss that doesn't time out, every so often a small volcano appears on the bottom of the screen that can be shot from a safespot).

NEW COUNTERSTOP: A DFK v1.51 counterstop has appeared on the Xbox 360 leaderboards. This was probably just us missing one, the run apparently was done by SYU in March 2018.

How do you counterstop TGL mode? My best guess would be the area 17/7 mass-of-eyeballs bosses that summon regular enemies constantly.

+1 for the 1.51 replay vid. Would like to see it.

Note about Exed Exes: the eight digit counterstop is intended, and actually ends the game with a congratulations message. Wish more infinitely looping games did that... This is probably where Gamest got the idea to cap scores at that number for other games.

Jaimers has an unlisted upload of the DFK 1.51 counterstop (I asked him if I could link it here and he said I could)

The PCB of Mushihimesama 1.5 counterstops very early (in stage 3 Maniac iirc), but I forgot most of the details.

Yep, that's exactly how. There's a few bosses you could farm actually since none of them timeout from what I can tell, could probably do it as early as the first boss but it'd take a long time and be pretty boring. The eyeball fortress thing is by far the most convenient spot to do it since your shot will be much wider by then and you've already built up a decent point stock. The GIF in my previous post was me deciding to counterstop the game because a) there is a scoreboard on Restart Syndrome for TGL Mode, and b) I'd never done it before so why not. that's one evening of my life I'll never get back
