What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

You talking the hologram? If so, looks like there was. Just found a CIB on ebay and you can see the effect.

hahaha. that's one of the few original NES games I bought in the 80's that actual held onto. (even when I sold my NES at a yard sale)

I really do wish they had made a SNES sequel. There are so many great ways they could have deepened it.

Ninja Commando - ADK, 1992

Holy crap, I've been sleeping on this game. I used to play it at the arcades as a kid — they had it on this giant 50" projection screen MVS setup where the stick was separated from the screen, something I've never seen before or since, don't know if they were custom units or what. And yeah, technically it is basically a shmup, but whatever. This game is MAXIMUM ALPHA DENSHI and the entire package is quality, from the music and visuals to the little messages for your character to the bonkers story and cutscenes. An underrated title in the Neo library, for sure. I love the creativity involved with the larger enemies and bosses, like the Egypt boss or the huge caveman who picks up other cavemen and throws them at you! Wish ADK had done more games like this one on the system, although a lot of their later stuff was quality too.

Still, Falcom made a ton of other games like it :)

welllll. maybe i'm wrong, but i don't think falcom made any side-scrolling action rpgs. faxanadu was one off collaboration from hudson soft. i suppose you could say Wonder Boy and the other Hudson Soft action games were sort of close, but none of them really had the light D&D elements like the items and experience points.

Falcom made Ys III, Legacy of the Wizard, and Sorcerian. I think Hudson did the PCE CD port of Ys III.

I'll give you Ys III. But LotW and Sorcerian are kinda different in gameplay, despite being sidecrolling (I know both those games are in the same extended familly as Faxanadu, cousins of sorts, but eh. still pretty different at the end of the day).

They also made a lot of similar games that aren't "sidescrolling". But yeah I agree that aspect adds a cool perspective to the game.

Doh. Ys III PCE-CD port was by Alfa System, not Hudson.

Demon's Tilt! Even with the issues it's still a blast to mess around with, and great OST.

Sometimes you should never go back., as, sadly, Grim Fandango is a pretty horrible game these days. The puzzles verge on the ridiculous at times, and the art style has aged far, far worse than any of the 2D entries. I've got Day of the Tentacle as I never played this back in the day, but wondering if I even want to start it now.

I went to a big amusement park in Denmark back in the the 90's and they also had Ninja Commando in a setup like that. I remember this because it was the first Neogeo game I ever played. It's probably a Sega Megalo : https://hard--candy.com/candy/Megalo_50

Inspired by your post I went to the PSN store on PS4 and looked through the Arcade Archives but sadly I can't find Ninja Commando in my region.

Don't think it's been released stand-alone yet? I've got it as part of the ADK Damashi comp.

When I replayed Grim Fandango around 10 years ago (recent enough that getting it to run on a modern computer was a hassle), I had the exact opposite experience.

The crude 3D really annoyed me when the game came out, but nowadays I find the style quite timeless and endearing. The mood and presentation of the game is really solid.
The puzzles are very simplified compared to classic point n clicks due to the one-button interaction system, which also annoyed me when it came out, but when I replayed it I was greatly surprised how much more creatively thought out they were compared to what I recalled. Pretty much all of them make sense, but require that unique adventure game train of thought that makes it feel more rewarding when you find the solution.

Day of The Tentacle is one of my favourite games in the genre. It will never feel old. But honestly, Grim Fandango is up there, it's a fantastic game, able to maintain the classic Tim Schafer humor while also tucking at the heartstrings with its noir'ish storytelling.

Checking the wikipedia page for Arcade Archives, it shows PS4 ACA Neo Geo Ninja Commando in every region except Europe. wtf that's a very strange choice of games to exclude/delay.

I've looked at Ninja Commando a number of times over the years, and each time been a bit frustrated that I couldn't do the special moves. Is this one worth digging deeper into just using normal attacks? Or should I buckle down and concentrate hard on gettin' gud at the special moves before learning the rest of game?

I agree, Grim Fandango is adorable and, most of the time, engaging and fun. I will say that some of the puzzles are a little obscure, and getting stuck in one place for a long time can have an impact on the flow of the story. I bought it when it was released and had no walkthrough, so I got stuck in places. I have memories of wandering around the damn casino for hours, and the frustration made me forget that a story was even taking place. So, I can see how someone could walk away with a bad taste in their mouth if they got stuck. Then again, try playing Infocom's text based Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy without a walkthrough and see how long you maintain sanity. It will make you long for the frustration of Grim Fandango.

Xenogears had a boss sequence that made me rage until I reassessed my plan of attack on it so it's quickly moving up the list.

I'm about an hour into FF VI Brave New World 2.0. I'm liking it so far but I hope the obvious fan mod joke script changes stop soon.

The standard question whenever anyone is playing Xenogears... How far in the "game" are you? :)

Lol, approaching the visual novel stage pretty fast. 7 chapters before disc 2 I think. But I mean, I've played through Xenosaga how bad can it really be??!

Very similar to that, for sure! I don't recall the ones at my arcade having seats though.

If it was Denmark it could likely have been one of those big italian ones.... I forgot the name, but there have been a few in rotation between local arcade collectors here.

Ahh, I have to try this, that's one game I've never thought about playing on a stick but sounds properly enjoyable for sure.

the cord that i used for my Xbox One pads stopped working on my PCs, so i've actually been playing a lot of games on stick on my PC just because otherwise i'd never be able to play anything (unless i went back to keyboard).

some games are definitely way harder on stick than on pad, but it's impressive how well Alien Soldier actually works on stick! switching firing modes mid-combat feels great, and i feel like i have really precise control over my timing for the melee attack and going from jump > hover > double jump when i actually practice the rhythm. korean lever goes back to neutral on the stick really quickly too so i feel like i have really precise control over Epsilon himself too.

i actually wonder if joysticks were used at any point for testing the game during development... the Mega Drive's joystick peripheral was never really something to write home about, but who knows?

魔法少女vs幻想郷 Magical Battle Arena demo works in Windows 2000. Allows running at 1600x1200 too, without stupid black bars. Figuring out the controls will require some effort.
