Castlevania : Dracula X. My least favorite 2D entry ever

Post by awbacon »

After playing the rest of the Castlevania games for my Dracula season, this one stuck out as a game I just do not enjoy playing. Give me Rondo of Blood any day Of the week over this one!

Konami somehow managed to blow their Rondo remake and release this? I’m shocked nobody said “let’s just enhance Rondo’s graphics, convert the music to a non-cd format, and ship it”!

Maybe I’m off base but this is my least fav 2D Castlevania game.

I feel like writing a long post about this, but I think I've exhausted my Dracula XX defense quota on this forum by now. Feel free to look up all the previous threads on the subject :D

TLDR:
It's a really good game, and definitely a better choice than the awkward CV4 in my book.
(and also better than Master of Darkness lol)
It's not better than Rondo, but then again, few games are.

Weird choice of order to cover XX before SCV4
XX is on my list to revisit, respect a bit more than last time, and go for the 1cc.

Ah well. where's the rest of the defense force?? Get Obscura in here!

Lol it probably was odd to talk about this before CV4

I just wanted to NOT talk about Rondo of Blood lol

You're on base. I hate Dracula XX too. I'd still probably rank The Adventure and Legends below it, though.

This. It's one of the weaker 'Vanias but still well above the average game.

Dracula XX is alright. You can do some fairly bangin things (look at this beautiful axe murder), and with Rondo's footsie game mostly intact, the no-damage bonus is a consistently engaging goal to shoot for. It is hamstrung by not only boned walk speed, but also a deeply retarded attempt at Rondo's nonlinearity - where that game lets you weave a happy trail through its smorgasbord of stages and bosses, here you are expected to bend over and take a BAD END rogering to enjoy the rather nice st5'! :o

OH WOW THIS IS GR8 ROFL

Fuck off, I will settle for the series-highlight Clock Tower and Death (GOOD END onry).

Overall I am okay with it and will not sell my unfathomably mint SFC copy any time soon! "It is actually THE TRU H@RDCORE PICK" extremists can eat my fucking ass, Rondo more than holds its own in the no-miss stakes. Show me a cunt who claims otherwise and I'll show you a shit-eating scrub.

Not to plant myself in either camp. Image I don't do camps. Get out of my tent you arse burglars! Image

I wonder who started the "trad CV = SLOW WALK SPEED" meme that infects XX and the GB Densetsu duo. I want to smack them! Compare DRACULA 1's scroll speed to Contra's. Argument over. DELIBERATE does not mean SLOW, for fuck's sake. Check it out, that's deliberate as fuck. Feinting, herding, striking - bang! Right in the kisser, SHINIGAMI-SAMA is out! With XX walk speed? No go, you'd be fucked!

This topic has been beaten to death here.

I find it just an average Castlevania, but even an average Castlevania is better than a lot of games out there.

The arcade title is my least favorite by a large margin. It just doesn't "feel" like it belongs in the series to me.

It actually didn't, originally! :o (ta CV wiki). TLDR: Random horror sidescroller, falling behind schedule, hastily rebadged with the newly-minted Dracula IP. Then the devs enlisted to help returned to their own projects, and it was shoved out the door sans playtesting.

MY RIVETING THOUGHTS ON THE MATTER Image TLDR: I don't hate it but god damn it got problems

Like when ROCK GOLEM THROW HE POOP

Haha.. Yeah, some of that wonky hit detection just makes me laugh.

Pretty fun game though when you get into a groove with it.
