Shameful gaming confessions
This is a thread for shameful confessions, especially in a community of hardcore gamerz. Bonus points for details why.
I'll start: I prefer "Sublevel Zero" to "Overload" despite the former being a roguelite and the latter being made by the original "Descent" designers.
I prefer S0's aesthetic, especially the chiptune/synthetic soundtrack, and I always love the mixture of blocky pixels with bloom. I like how S0 feels more like you're flying a spaceship than doomguy in zero gravity. And I love the whole animation when switching weapons. I hate the crafting and unlock cancer in S0, and the ramming mechanic is much better implemented in Overload. But man, one is gloomy 90s "the economy's booming but I'm completely without direction" while the other is cheerful wondrous "it's the 80s before the Challenger explosion and we're all gonna grow up to be astronauts together!"
I look forward to more confessions.

I like shooters and belt scrollers, but don't care for run-and-guns. I think it's the combination of bullet dodging and platforming that does it for me. It's like playing Gradius, but only being able to control your vertical movement half the time.

Re: Shameful gaming confessions
When I was playing Mario Kart on the Snes with my cousins, I was proud that I was the best player. We played it with the cheat (was it a cheat? or just a power up? I can't remember) to make your character small. We wanted to finish the whole thing and see if the character would be small on the podium (I'm sure it was set over a couple of races). I failed a couple of times, but on my cousin's run, he actually did well and finished in the top 3.
I turned off the Snes in saltiness before we could see the podium. I was maybe 10? The shame is still like a stain on my soul decades later.

The Cake vs Pie Dilemma, now that's something nearly everybody relates to and no matter how you side and slide it's deeply shameful how one comes to a conclusion. Ease up, and have a slice of... your preference. Delicious, if shameful.

Re: Shameful gaming confessions
I usually play through new games on Easy difficulty first. I don't like dealing with double challenge of tough/numerous enemies AND figuring out what to do and where to go. The latter is only present on the first time through so it's better to deal with it without any extra hassle. I can't understand people who immediately go for the hardest mode and suffer more than they really should.
Also, in my teen years I used to play FPS classics with god mode only. I did go for stuff like higher difficulties and pistol starts so I fell in love with the resource management aspect of the latter and still keep doing it as a default way of playing where I can.

When I was first time joining this forum I stupidly lists my 1CC games that I never even 1CC them, also post false scores. Now I I fully cleaned up my clear lists and now it's all genuine lists

Re: Shameful gaming confessions
the DmC reboot is actually a pretty decent game! and if you approach it more like something corny and gothy like Supernatural instead of the typical DMC fare, most of the story and acting is actually kind of okay. (the baby sniper part is still one of the dumbest things in all of video games though, and the cringe-worthy and low-key homophobic promotion from Tameem makes me want to give him a wedgie. )
it's definitely nowhere close to the kind of consistent quality and personality that you'd get from a traditional DMC experience, and i still think that nobody should ever play the non-Definitive Edition of DmC (which is frustrating to the point where it becomes near-unplayable), DmC:DE is actually pretty good. i've actually played through it a few times and enjoyed myself, and there's some cool stuff that you can do in the game (especially after all of the quality of life changes and bug fixes).

Re: Shameful gaming confessions
Sublevel Zero's pretty great, nothing to be ashamed of there. I get what it's going for with the slower, more deliberately paced crafting, though it is a pain to be a bit obsessive and juggle a bunch of different weapons as crafting fodder. If I had a couple complaints it'd be that the dynamic music that kicks into high gear in combat only rarely seems to actually stay intense and never long enough. I wanna hear the richness of the music when it really hits its peak whenever you're in combat more and longer, so lately I play with the ingame music off and just load up the soundtrack to play alongside it...Mischief Maker wrote:I prefer S0's aesthetic, especially the chiptune/synthetic soundtrack, and I always love the mixture of blocky pixels with bloom
That and dealing with accuracy variation on weapons sucks. There's too many potentially good weapons ruined by massive variation in accuracy stat, I think either they should have been way less variable on weapon accuracy or done away with it as a stat altogether.

My greatest shame is that I've 1cc'd Giga Wing twice now without using reflect, but I still can't score worth a damn in it.

I've played through a few mainly because they are a time sink that kinda sneaks up on you. Good way to pass time when I'm depressed.

I don't think I'll ever play another standard, turn-based JRPG. Not ashamed! Just too goddamn long and no payoff for this cat.

Monsters that become your buds by encouraging you to wander into and rip them out of their habitat in the wild and force them to spend the rest of their lives encased in small plastic balls as your personal pet collections to be forced to battle for your personal amusement and pumped full of drugs to boost their stats so you can gain the crown of "Best at forcing wild animals to engage in bloodsport for human pleasure".drauch wrote:Man, that's like saying Streets of Rage is encouraging street fighting, lol. Why, yes, that's completely in the same moral vein as a game about beating up a mafia boss and his gang members, how foolish of me not to have realized! :V
Kids who thought Pokémon was the best GB RPG were missing out on the joy of chainsawing a megalomaniacal god to death.

Never liked a Konami game. Can't explain it, just don't get on with any of them.
No shame in that. I get people trying to project shame on me for never having played one, but I was 18 when the first game was released in the UK so I didn't grow up with any of them. It's not really something you discover at that age, unless you were one of the stoners who watched cartoons "ironically". I can't say it holds interest now, the whole thing seems a bit "My First JRPG".PAPER/ARTILLERY wrote:I have never played a single Pokemon game.

Re: Shameful gaming confessions
Pokemon won out over a lot of other GB RPGs because the designs were cool, you had a cast of over a hundred possible party members with a hundreds of abilities, and you could battle your friends.BareKnuckleRoo wrote: Monsters that become your buds by encouraging you to wander into and rip them out of their habitat in the wild and force them to spend the rest of their lives encased in small plastic balls as your personal pet collections to be forced to battle for your personal amusement and pumped full of drugs to boost their stats so you can gain the crown of "Best at forcing wild animals to engage in bloodsport for human pleasure".

Having multiplayer does a lot for the series. Many people mostly play it for the multiplayer at this point... although a lot of people just play Pokemon Showdown or something instead, since playing on cartridge is super slow [building and designing an optimal team takes AGES vs just picking shit from a dropdown box and being ready to go, much faster feedback loop to figure out what's worthwhile or not, much faster feedback loop to responding to new shit, much faster loop to just playing the game at all].
Pokemon streamlines a lot of the RPG experience, too. It's pretty impressive how much less clunky it is than many other GB RPGs, to the point where hilariously little has changed from game to game all the way up to the modern era. It's pick up and play in a way that many other RPGs aren't, where you're trying to remember what to do, where to go, etc.
Of course, the issue with that is that apart from more monsters and moves [a constant upwards trend until extremely recently], minor mechanics changes [abilities, physical/special damage determined per move instead of per move type], and quality of life shit [not needing specific moves on a character to break rocks or cut trees or fast travel], the games are extremely interchangable.
As for the plot... the games largely do cop out on the nitty gritty of what you're doing. The plot of Pokemon Black/White is about a guy who runs an organization that's against humans capturing Pokemon, but you can guess how that turns out.
It's regularly implied that Pokemon willingly join humans so they can get stronger and beat up other Pokemon, but now that sounds like the humans are a society of enablers.
The stories have gotten into pretty standard world shaking RPG fare too -- Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald is about dealing with guys who want to reshape the land/sea ratio of the planet, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum is about stopping a guy who wants to become the god of his own world, X/Y is about stopping a guy who wants to use an ancient superweapon to genocide the "useless" people [which makes more sense in Y version because he uses the bird that represents death instead of deer that represents life like in X]. Yeah, you're still doing the same "get 8 badges, become Champion" thing each time, but it's a framework to tell another story at this point.
tl;dr: the series is mediocre in a bunch of ways and the plot is basic and glosses over a bunch of shit about what you're doing, but it still has a few key things that stand out, namely being very streamlined, having a large cast [there are almost 900 Pokemon to date], and having multiplayer.
