Gongjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018) - Basically a Korean version of the Blair Witch Project. Once you seen one found footage movie, you've seen them all.
Clockers (1995) - It was a pretty intriguing crime drama, but I was much more interested in the UNRELEASED SEGA VR HEADSET that the kid the movie was playing. Such a random product placement.

Frozen II

Unexpectedly bad, with a remarkably wrong and unsatisfactory plot, a large step back in art compared to Frozen, and mediocre songs. Walt Disney wouldn't have allowed a disappointment of this magnitude to be released.

Lighting and backgrounds are exceptionally bad (at many points I thought I was seeing incomplete provisional shots, edited in by mistake) and there are many badly animated characters, nonsensical designs (e.g. Elsa's outfits, a mixture of body paint, tough sportswear, elegant dresses and ice magic), jarring "special effects"; even relatively good things contribute, being an exception, to a pervasive feeling of inconsistency and low quality.

Regarding plot, it's impressive how all interesting characters are long dead or absent and most of the recurring characters have no useful role; Elsa has an ill-defined and weakly motivated mystical quest (basically, she hears a call), which she approaches in remarkably stupid ways, and Anna's intervention to save her is even more arbitrary. Many scenes have a strange and incoherent tone, from killing off SPOILER as collateral damage (to motivate other characters) to nonsense gags.

This sounds like the Christmas special all over again. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case. :(

Paddleton

Watch this movie!!

Image

I've known about it for a while, but I've been holding out on it, as the inevitability of death is one of the scariest thing in the world to me.
That said, Paddleton isn't too hard on the drama. It's mostly a simple, lighthearted slice-of-life story, and despite a very movie-like framing, it just feels a lot more real than a lot of that kind of movies normally do. Part of which I'd credit to the incredible performance from both Mark Duplass and, surprisingly, Ray Romano - a lot of it supposedly completely improvised.

The comedy aspect of the movie really hits home, usually quite subtle in the form of grown men acting impulsively and emotionally, with at least one of them showing clear signs of something akin to aspergers. Though rather than making fun of the characters, it makes them feel likable and familiar.
At the end of the day though, I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel both sad and uncomfortable getting through the movie. It's just super well executed and I feel like it'll stay with me for a while.

Honestly, if Marriage Story is gonna scrape up all those oscars people claim, Paddleton deserves them doubly so. But it's probably not gonna be noticed at all. Hell, you wouldn't even realise it's on Netflix without searching specifically for its title. For some reason they have done absolutely nothing to push it. I wonder how many other absolute gems they've got buried there.

The Irishman

I only last 30 minutes the first time, went back to it over a couple of nights finishing it last night. I was pretty blown away by it. To me it got way better as soon as Pacino came in. Also, I think the de aging thing becomes less noticeable as the film progresses because the characters are growing older.

This really felt like a proper Scorsese film, I'd rank it higher than Casino. There was a real sense of melancholy in the latter third if the film, which I think is related to aging, not only of the characters but the fact that we probably won't get this cast and director ever again. This is it. It was really well handled, hardly any music as the film slows down. Brilliantly paced, the length worked in its favour.. it got to me dammit.

DeNiro, Pesci and Pacino were all very good. One if them should get an oscar nod. I'd give it to Pesci.
The one bad performance is Stephen Graham. His accent was crap, he just sounded like a scouser, which he is. How the hell can actors get away with shitty accents?

Burlesque: **

Award bait musical with a bit of a reputation as a cinematic Trainwreck. Christina Aguilera leads as an orphan farm girl from Iowa with a dream of performing in skimpy outfits for horny rich guys, and Cher gives a Razzie nominated performance as the co owner (along with her now flamingly gay ex) of a Burlesque club in LA that's about to be turned into a 40 story office building by a cliched evil developer. The result is your standard "save the orphanage" plot, only this time the orphanage is full of vaguely attractive showgirls who act like they're in Junior High, and there's no way they can actually save it without a particularly egregious ex machina. The end result is a jumbled PG-13 mess that's full of women dancing in skimpy outfits which somehow manages to be about as titillating as a gynecological exam.

Finally checked out It - Chapter 2 on Blu-Ray format -- the folks got in a Capcom Street Fighter cab that's period correct for the year 1987 but in the background arcade cab scenery, one can spot a Midway's Mortal Kombat cab (this particular cab hails from the year 1992 -- a mere five years down the road). I'd have to assume that it would've quite hard to scrounge up some 1987 and earlier arcade game cabinets for the movie theater arcade scene considering that the flashback scenes are supposed to be from 1987. Would it have hard to get ahold of a proper Capcom's Hyper Dyne Sidearms cab from 1986 to show in that movie theater scene of It - Chapter 2?

The Irishman (2019) Ancient tale masterfully told. Undeniably a bit Goodfellas x Casino: Hyper Fighting but I ain't complainin'. Runtime will be either endearingly unhurried or irritatingly indulgent. Like an evening with an old talkative pal and his shaweet record collection. Image

I will watch it, since it has scenes filmed in Taranto, Italy where my grandmother lived almost all her life.

Its the scenes with the draw bridge and castle. There are youtubes showing the scenes being filmed.

A friend of mine who's a librarian loves to point out that in Back to the Future, when Marty wakes up in his own bed, the yellow book on his bed's shelf is "Reference Quarterly," a trade journal for librarians that no skateboarding teen with attitude would have on his shelf, not even for a class.

6 underground.

Its a run of the mill action A team movie. Some truly awesome stuntwork in places but marred by a cut throat editing process.
If you like movies like Fast and the Furious, where the good guys destroy everything in site and sip on Martinis at the end this is the movie for you.

For me, no. Its a 6/10.

I only have two problems with 6 Underground. Does it really take place on the Day of the Dead or is that just the codename for the day they take down the villain? Because the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday, and the movie looked like it took place in the Middle East than Mexico. Also, during the final battle at the villain's private yacht, the movie can't decide if it should be daytime or nighttime.

Likewise.

Didn't rate it at all. It just proves that Disney will make movies with little to no plot, no endgame in sight, invent reasons to reincarnate dead people like joining up family trees. The amount of firepower the final order had was so vast that you need to find another universe to be safe in. But alas, just throw a stick at those big planet busters and it will blow up.

Maybe I am out of touch with movie making. My facebook friends are all loving it. The John williams score was great, the special effects and CGI were box office, but just like Game of Thrones that also turned into a turd, it doesn't make up for crap story telling.

Lets assume Snoke didn't die in ep8, would Palpatine even come into the picture? I really am not sure if Disney are making it up as they go along or if they truly had a road map since before TFA ep7.

either way it makes for a disappointing trilogy over all, mostly screwed by crappy characters and weak story telling abilities.

Star Wars Episode IX

More or less, what I expected from J.J. Abrams: an epic quest to bring a trilogy of trilogies to a quasi-conclusion that, more or less, makes sense. Rushed, full of absurd and irritating bullshit, and only decent (not good) because it shows some cold elegance and ingenuity relative to the overwhelming, barely met external constraints:
  • Having to deal with all important loose ends, "character arcs" and unfinished business because there won't be further opportunities (e.g. it isn't a spoiler that a lot of time is spent defeating the First Order and following Rey and Kylo Ren in their Force oscillations between the Light Side, the Dark Side and early retirement until they make up their minds). Wisely, new places and characters are kept to a minimum, but this also means forfeiting world building and sense of wonder.
  • A mandate for nostalgia and fanservice (e.g. vintage lightsabers and spacecraft, Lando Calrissian, references to old dialogues and scenes, ghosts/flashbacks/etc. of dead characters). I've read that a special effort was made to adapt leftover shots of Carrie Fisher from Episodes VII and VIII to keep general Leia as a major character, which is probably one of the main reasons for keeping the rebel fleet on the previously seen jungle planet.
  • Conventional and traditional solutions because the audience is expected to be stupid and insensitive. For example, I hoped for the First Order as an organization to turn good (it would make sense at a certain point of the story and it would allow cool and highly cathartic developments), but villains are only allowed to be ambivalent, not to go out of business.
Listing plot holes and bad scenes would take too long and involve spoilers. The two categories I find most offensive are the major insults to economics and politics undermining the macro-level plot (let's say that if the galaxy contains rational people both sides of the war have highly implausible resources and support that should either not exist or appear much earlier) and the arbitrary brutalization of established facts about the Force and certain characters in order to support particularly bad and particularly novel bullshit, but every SW fan is going to draw a line and be mad for something important.

Saw Knives Out. Writing could have been punchier in spots and I wish they'd given Lakeith Stanfield more to do, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. Definitely a great movie to see with the family over the holidays!

I always found it a little hard to swallow that Randall preferred Jedi. Otherwise, stellar scene. I remember hearing Kevin Smith came up w/ it b/c at some point in the past he and someone were talking about Star Wars rather intently and they had an eavesdropper. Or something to that effect.

Knives Out: ***

Daniel Craig, in an effort to try to distance himself from James Bond whenever he plays a character that isn't James Bond, seems to have a strange tendency to use some really bad accents. We saw this in Logan Lucky where he played a redneck character, and once again in this movie he did a similar southern drawl, so instead of looking like James Bond on his day off, he looked like James Bond on his day off pretending he wasn't James Bond on his day off. That said, the story moved at a decent pace, but never quite felt like it reached its potential, and sort of just ended at some point. The movie makes it clear pretty much from the beginning that the obvious conclusion it was trying to railroad you toward was the wrong one, made most of the characters/suspects one-dimensional enough that it was pretty clear which one was the prime suspect. All in all not bad, but there's much better movies in this genre to watch.

A Muppet Christmas Carol

I'm pretty sure I've posted this one here before, but this is one we have to watch every year. It's ironic that CinemaSins, of all places, was the one that really made the point of why this movie works as well as it does: Michael Caine, in spite of being surrounded by Muppets, is able to play the part of Scrooge completely straight. At the same time, Kermit is able to play the part of Bob Cratchitt completely straight as well (over time you begin to realize that often Kermit is the "straight man" in the middle of all of the Muppet antics going on) with most of the comedy in the film coming from Gonzo and Rizzo.

In much the same way, you also realize that Muppet Treasure Island (another classic from the same era) does exactly the same thing. Aside from some minor fourth wall breaks, Tim Curry (as Long John Silver) and Kermit (as Captain Smollett) play their parts almost completely straight, with the antics coming from the supporting crew. This is probably best illustrated by a scene near the beginning of the film where Sam the Eagle preceeds his arrival to the ship with dire warnings to the crew that he is unstable and PLAGUED by inner demons. Of course, when he actually arrives shortly afterward it's just the usual mild-mannered Kermit we're used to, but shortly after he has an uncharacteristic outburst when he realizes that he's got the "zaniest bunch of scoundrels villans and cutthroats and he's ever seen" for a crew. Even the straight man has his breaking point.

That said, Tim Curry thoroughly chews the scenery with his performance there, but what else would you expect from him?
