Thanks. I gues just as with any other Cave shmup, proximity is a factor as well.

Ring's main shot damage is very high at close range (as you might guess, being a wide shot). Bolt's damage potential is slightly lower but it's pretty consistent at all ranges.

And what about full-auto ? (C you activate in dipsw menu)

I've been using it lately and I can't make up my mind about if I like it / if it's useful or not.

Depends on the game, but in some games it's vital. It's a must for me in any game, though, because I despise tapping.

Well I meant specifically in Progear, because that seems to change the gameplay a lot but I'm no expert so maybe it's a false impression.

Oh, sorry for misunderstanding. Yeah, I wouldn't be at all surprised if using the C button makes it slightly faster to activate gunner mode compared to tapping A for shot, since some other Cave games behave like that.

Progear requires a fairly vigorous tapping speed to keep shooting the rapid shot at the max rate, but I don't think it actually gives any specific advantage in terms of more damage vs using C shot autofire or vice versa. Any competent arcade you go to will have the C-button autofire enabled for CAVE games since that's pretty much the case for all of them, and from like Espgaluda onwards having an always enabled rapid button no longer became an option but the normal default expectation. Don't be afraid to use it.

Are there any gameplay differences between Gunlock and RayForce (meaning: the arcade versions)?

Can you only reach the TLB in Danmaku Unlimited 3 on Hard and True difficulties? Not Medium?

do you need to fulfill the same requirements in Ketsuipachi that you do for Dai-Fukkatsu in order to access the TLB?

Yeah. It made me sad too (I suck too much to 1CC hard mode), but you can unlock the TLB fight in practice mode by completing Hard mode I believe (you are allowed to continue.)

Only thing unusual about it compared to other vertical shmups is the lack of autoscrolling, so sure. There's already precedent for similar games with Out Zone and Fixeight.

I'm unsure of exactly when it happened, but Kiki Kaikai and Granada have been kosher for many years now, so I can't imagine Gundhara being an issue any more than the aforementioned Out Zone & FixEight.

Ah. That's the Great Beyond as far as I know, I don't think Slug/Contra etc have ever been okayed here.

I know it's a poor compromise, but if you ever want to start a HS table in the OT scrolling action thread, please feel free. :smile:

Judging of Ghegs/system11's word of god according to rules:
Keep posts to the appropriate topic areas. We will never have a concrete definition of a shmup, so make a sensible judgement.
Hmm idk, rail shooter could count as shmup too :roll:

It's a bit of an arbitrary line, but to me what makes Metal Slug different from shmups is the gravity on the player character. Though even shmups like The Great Ragtime Show have some of that. To be honest I personally wouldn't mind seeing Metal Slug score threads (other than Metal Slug having pretty terrible scoring, but that's beside the point).

What happened to Tecnosoft?

I know Raizing, Compile Heart and Milestone are the successors to Compile.

But which companies succeeded Tecnosoft?

My apologies if this has been asked before.

Not "successors" per se, as TS were still around at the time, and not STGs, but a few ex-members went on to CA Productions, who produced at least two real highlights in Hagane (SFC) and Bulk Slash (Saturn). Excellent ninja sidescroller and arena seek/destroy, respectively. Don't be put off by the latter's dated polys, it's a snap to pick up and play and one of that generation's best arcade-styled originals.

In 2001, Tecnosoft was merged into the R&D division of pachinko maker Twenty-one Company.
In 2016, all Tecnosoft IPs were acquired by Sega (save for the digital soundtrack rights).

Ok I got one. Compile was acquired by Hudson if I'm not mistaken, and then Hudson was acquired by Konami. So, does that mean Konami owns the rights to Zanac, et al?

This recent interview with M2 gets you partway:
But at one point, all the IPs held by Compile went to another company called Aiki. But when Aiki wasn't around anymore, the rights went to a company called D4E. And then we bought the Aleste IP from D4E.
Couldn't say where the other Compile IPs currently are, though.

This is what I could piece together from various online sources [1], [2], [3], [4]:

• After compile went bankrupt and dissolved in 2002/2003, president Masamitsu "Moo" Niitani, coming from parent company Idea Factory (former employees of Data East), formed RPG-focussed successor Compile Heart in 2006 (which still exists);
• Takayuki “Jemini” Hirono joined Kazuyuki Nakashima at Eighting (originally Raizing, which was merged into the former in 2000);
• and other, STG-related staff, formed Milestone (defunct since 2013);
• while the Compile IP went to Aiky.

After Aiky went away, D4 Enterprise held the rights to the IP, (apparently no personnel overlap).

I'm not exactly sure about the connection between D4E and Compile Heart.

segaretro says:
"The rights to Puyo Puyo were acquired by and remain the property of Sega. [...] The rights to all other Compile properties were acquired by online publisher D4 Entertainment [ed: it's really D4 Enterprise], but were sold (back) to Compile Heart in late 2010."

Wikipedia says:
"As of 2010, Compile Heart entered into a licensing deal with D4 Enterprise to create new video games based on franchises from Compile properties."

Horii recently said in the interview that BulletMagnet mentioned:
"[...] the rights went to a company called D4E. And then we bought the Aleste IP from D4E. So now we have this IP."

So maybe, the rights went *again* to D4E sometime after 2010 and were then acquired by M2? Merely speculating due to the lack of consistent information...

In 2016, successor company COMPILE〇 (speak: Compile-maru) was founded by Niitani,
but, taking into account the above, I don't think they have the rights to any of the older Compile IP.

Edit: Niitani explained in this interview that COMPILE〇 was created to maket the puzzle game Nyoki Nyoki.

What a difference to Tecnosoft, hah.
