If you grew up in Texas in the 80s, you'd have hated Ross Perot as he was trying to get the school year extended (among other things if memory serves). I think they even made a parody song and ran it on the local radio.Mischief Maker wrote:Ross Perot just died.
He was mocked viciously for this at the time, but damn did his giant sucking sound speech prove to be prescient.

I watched all of The Man Who Fell to Earth twice, and still don't understand a single thing.

Mr. Hauer,
Thank you for Blind Fury and Surviving the Game. Two movies that were watched repeatedly on many sleepovers with friends.
One of which I'm still friends with.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Russi Taylor, the voice of Minnie Mouse (and many other characters) since 1986. She was 75.

I read a couple of obituaries, it seems silly that neither of them mention Hobo With A Shotgun which is a bit of a shame as Rutger played that character to perfection.

Peter Fonda dead at 79. I just watched Easy Rider this week, weird. I downloaded The Hired Hand years ago but never got round to it.

He will be survived by the massive amount of human suffering left in his wake, and still more to come in the form of climate catastrophe that he used his massive inherited fortune to exacerbate.GaijinPunch wrote:David Koch
But you'll see it was all worth it. All those dying refugees, all those extinct species, all that desertified farmland, all to fund the lifestyle of his Randian ubermensch nephew Wyatt.
The Amazon Rainforest burns tonight in his memory.

Oh fuck this thread. Franco Columbu, Ahnuld's good buddy and fellow bodybuilder / bricklayer / strong dude / OG Terminator has died at 78 years of age. Then again 78 may be good, considering the stuff they put in their bodies back then.
Adios either way, thanks for rad T-800 future massacre scene. ;-;7

Robert Frank, photographer most well known for his seminal book The Americans dies at 94.
Even if you're not into photography, I believe everyone needs to at least read about the journey. Spending years on the road and some 700 rolls of 35mm film and an arrest in Arkansas for 'being suspicious', the body of work took years to get him the recognition he deserved. Eventually it would virtually redefine street photography, and snapshots in general.

He popped up in an episode of the Fall Guy the other week. Pretty interesting career, good character actor. Started getting work again after Tarantino put him in Jackie Brown. 80 is an ok age I suppose. Last proper thing I saw him in was Bone Tomahawk.

Jake Burton (inventor of modern snowboards)
I spent many winters in the Alps as a little kid, and I remember seeing the few early adopters bringing boards in the 80's (including those funky rocket fish/swallowtail designs) and some had the BURTON brand on them of course.
Just hit me in the feels for some reason, reminded me of that faraway time, and that like me many people came to experience snowboard because of seeing similar sights as kids and wanting to try, I guess.

Brad McQuaid, 51, cause of death undeclared.
Everquest (and its sequel, World of Warcraft) always was a good example of the commercialization of a public good - it was DIKU with fancy art assets, but with less content and comparatively near-zero player impact on the game or world itself.
Guess I'll read some of his thoughts on design tonight.
