Nah, hate's way too strong a word. It's just another crummy 2010s superhero cartoon. I was a bit disappointed though, given its relatively enjoyable first half. Went in expecting crap, thought I'd been pleasantly surprised. Turns out the Crap Sprayer™ just hadn't been switched on yet, and I took a Big Mouthful™. Image

It's laughable if anything. One of DF's innumerable clever callbacks is to this stunt, and dear sweet Jesus - the comparison does it no favours! That's no green screen sonny! He could've seriously busted his jaffers open IRL. A man's broken body cartwheeling down the road in one direction, his jaffers in quite another. Horrific! Don't even get me started on "WOW LMAO THE HELACOPTER ASPLODE," zzzzzz James Cameron was a couple feet away from going Vic Morrow 2: LA Freeway Boogaloo BITD, and unlike that pussy John Landis, it'd have been his ass getting decapitated, not his leading man and a pair of small Asian children!

Fuck. JC used to be pretty punk rock. Piranha 2-ass motherfucker. Image

I'm trying to think of the last entertainment I actually hated, as opposed to wearily shrugging off or, as with DF, self-satisfiedly weeing all over. ... ... ... Aha! I hated Season 8 of Game of Thrones, but not because of the dogshit quality. More because those smarmy, shit-eating hacks Benioff & Weiss crammed twenty episodes' worth of plot into six - and six progressively lazier ones at that. Holy cow, I hope both of them step on Lego and die of Ebola. Dark Fate does its job and delivers its product: BIG SPARKLY PLANE CRASH w/ EPIC ROBO-KARATE SHOWDOWN. It's just a product I've no interest in whatsoever.

"By what right... does the wolf judge the lion?! By what right?!"
"Help! Help the Kingslayer!"
"Jaime... my name is Jaime..."

Oh fuck, what once was and what could have been. I'm really annoyed at those cunts.

EDIT: Oh wait! BWAAAAHAHAHAHA! LMAOOO! GOD'S IN HIS HEAVEN, ALL'S RIGHT WITH THE WORLD Image (idgaf about star wars, just rofl @ these jokers losing their gig after bedshitting GOT season 8 Image)

EDIT 2: Wait what the fuck now I feel kind of bad for them Image I have been played like a chump, xxx1993! All the world's a stage etc etc Image

I was enjoying a rewatch of that one recently myself! Image Incidentally, I wonder how Suge Knight's trial is going! He had MAD BEEF with the guy who plays the local gang chieftain in TD, then he ran over some poor motherfucker's head! He is looking a lot like Uncle Phil these days - not that I would tell him that to his big walrus face!

But I'll tell you what else is black and blue, xxx1993! Benioff & Wise's already shitty-ass reputation! Image

A rewatch reminded me of how consistently well-composed T2's shots are. Nice n' economical and never obfuscates the effects or stunts or props. I could swear I was watching furiously sodomising underwater robo-buggery at one point late in Dark Fate, but that would be creative. If I do say so myself!

Image

Image

Even that lobby scene where some dingus wanders into shot right before the SWAT team opens up on AHNULD looks great! Well, I shouldn't belittle him. He was probably hard-working crew! It's that bitch JC's fault tbh. Just like how he failed to wrangle Linda Hamilton's massive poofy hairdo during T1's hardcore bareback plowing - I mean EMOTIONAL LOVE SCENE, which resulted in it looking as if the saviour of humanity was conceived in a godforsaken three-way with a small furry animal!

T1 is sharp too, needless to say. Glorious metal-shredding automotive firefights shot with icy precision. This is me reading HG101:

Image

Also, remember when crashing headlong into a fucking concrete wall at 150MPH actually had some consequences for our robotic hero?

Image

Haha, yeah, now he's falling out of planes and shit.

There were, surprisingly, some hints of visual artistry in Dark Fate's decent first half. The opening is sharply arranged, as cynically soft-rebooting as its actual content was. Also watch for the slow pan down a dreary Future Puddle, reflecting a pack of winged pursuers whispering past overhead. Don't get your hopes up though, the future is now generic Edge of Tomorrow hentai tentacles. I liked EOT but certainly not for its blah creature designs! Then again, what hope is there for a Stan Winston-worthy future war at this point? I swear I saw the fucking picnic basket robot from Dynamite Headdy in one of these movies.

EDIT: yeah I did! I knew I wasn't imagining it! Holy fuck lmao. And you know what else, that big chap is 1000% more interesting than anything you'll see in DF's tentacle-dominated future.

Saw Zombieland 2, was entertained for about 50% of the time. Which is high praise I guess.

All this talk lately of Hocus Pocus 2 is vaguely intriguing to me (though it's gross they're saying it's direct to streaming). If a gap of 10 years is an eternity, what's a gap of 30 years then?

Mullholland Drive

I was very late to the party on this one, only having seen it for the first time a few years ago. Not sure what held me up... maybe one of those "I'll watch it when I can give it the attention it deserves" and as a busy man, never got the time. Anyway, first time was in a very uncomfortable chair at The Music Box Theater" in Chicago. This time, a slightly more comfortable chair but uncomfortable setting (back row middle seat of a plane). Anywho, while there are a lot of disjointed bits, I find this far more accessible than Twin Peaks and probably Lost Highway (which I've not seen in some 20 years). Of course I may have it all wrong, but even so there's a ton of good shit going on here: Throwbacks to the 50s, Angelo Badalamenti score, Rebekah Del Rio acapella cover of Roy Orbison, and some girl on girl action. A film class could study this alongside Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as how each director sees Hollywood.

What a cool cat! *REMEMBERING THE SCENES* ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Echoing Bryan I think a Movie Entertainments to Inescapable Despair Of Man gauge would be most apt in our time of shitty entertainment! I give The Terminator an 80/20 ratio on the scale = that's pretty good! Points dinged for a fairly overwrought episode of NEANDERTHAL LOVIN' and also that goddamn hairdo! The poor movie, it's branded right across its handsome cyber-noir face with a red-hot curling iron. Also Aquanet spritzed directly into eyeballs. Otherwise though I was divested of the ghost of Dank Balls, which seems to grow more odious in retrospect.

A scurred ipad done an apocalyptic thing. Now it must retroactively PWN its arch-enemy. It's totally not Skynet or Judgement Day or John Connor, though. Just stuff functionally identical to that. Oh, fuck off.

There is this superb dramatic irony throughout. Of course the filth be larfin @ crazy hobo w/shotgun! He's fucking barking, clearly. No he's actually really agitated because you CUNTS have trussed him up for a remorseless balls-deep robo-wronging, and your brains are gonna be the lube! It's a pet curiosity of mine: what would it be like to be killed by a bona-fide monster? Vindicating? Vexing? Who would ever believe this shit, it's not fair and now I'm plinking rounds into Roboman's back and shitting out my liver in a hail of automatic return fire. :[

The tragically repeating non-arrival of a T3 that doesn't choke unfathomable (indeed, seemingly ever-escalating) magnitudes of cock will forever haunt us, and talking does little to help - but after revisiting poor Lt. Traxler's fate, I would be down with a third that completely buggers off the carousel for a downbeat conspiracy flick about some guy trying to figure out WTF is up with super sexy Austrian men showing up and owning cops before fucking off again. No robots or nothing, just the awful realisation that those guys really did get... Owned By Robots.

And then rejoin in a great big fuckoff Future War two-parter to end it all.

Image

See you around AHNULD. ;-;

---

Halloween III gets a 90/10 on the Movie Entertainments to Inescapable Despair Of Man gauge, a reliable seasonal favourite starring the nemesis of poofy 80s hairdo: Porno Moustache Man. He's in more charismatic form here than in the later Prince of Darkness, actually putting on a far more credible Lovecraftian Protagonist gig than in that movie's expressly cosmic pants-shitter format. I don't know if it was the same actor and I'm not going to check, it's more amusing this way.

It's a shame this series didn't have the wherewithal for a dedicated anthology format, this is one helluva first outing. Phantasm with all subtlety stripped out and replaced by baby-eating bionic evil.

I'm still trying to get my siblings together to watch Mulholland Drive. Right now, the movie has taken over a space reserved for "movie I always have to vote on for movie night, but never gets picked."* I've seen it already and loved it, and would love to get the chance to revisit its world: a nightmare nibbling ferociously on the edge of reality at every turn.

*The previous movie that had this spot? Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2! Until I forced people to watch it, that is - to my great delight.

Will similar measures be necessary? Will they ever learn what the cowboy is all about?
And was this for real, or was I just dreaming? No one knows yet.

Jonny2x4 wrote:The Thing (1982) - Got the Steelbook edition from Shout Factory, which comes with an extra disc containing the 4k remaster that Arrow Video put out for the UK in 2017 (which is the version that I saw), in addition to the 2k remaster that Shout Factory themselves released in 2016 and a third disc with a buttload of bonus content, including a TV cut of the movie (not sure how it differs from the theatrical cut). Not a fan of the cover art they used though (I prefer the Paul Shipper art they used for the regular Blu-ray edition, but that didn't come with the 4k remaster). First time I saw this movie in full and I'll have to say it's easily my favorite movie in John Carpenter's filmography. The 4k remaster is pretty well done, with a sharp and clean image, although it's not an actual 4k Blu-ray (for some reason they still haven't put one yet). There's not much I could say about the movie that hasn't been better articulated elsewhere. You can see the influence the creature designs had on many video games, especially the Biohazard series, and the fact that it's all practical effects achieved with handmade sculptures and puppetry is pretty amazing. The ending is open to interpretation and it could be seen as a bit anticlimatic, but it fits with the kind of story they wrote.

It seems that the 2011 version of The Thing is actually a prequel to the '82 version, although it doesn't seem to be all that interesting based on the trailers.
There's the TV cut version that was shown on NBC many moons ago that had voiceover narration for all of the characters including their profession and ages during the scene when the Norge gunman is trying to kill the Huskie dog (or is it something else?) + a different ending that leads the viewer to think otherwise (with the same Huskie dog that was shown at the beginning of the film evading a helicopter). Of course, John Carpenter disregards that "alternative" version and regards the theatrical version as the one to watch.

--------

Terminator: Dark Fate

Director James Cameron was interviewed after the premiere of Alita: Battle Angel and said that "In the science fiction genre, anything can happen". So if you watch T2 with the idea that both John & Sarah Connor are still out there driving into the darkness of a lonely road which leads to an unknown fate/future. Sure, what Sarah Connor did in T2 does affect the storyline that leads to the 2019 sequel of Terminator: Dark Fate. So yes, this is a proper third Terminator sequel that takes place in the year 2020 A.D. timeline. With an estimated $185 million dollar production budget according to imdb.com, it certainly has a more robust budget to work with than with T2's reported $100 million production budget back in 1990 in time for it's initial July 4th 1991 opening weekend debut.

Leviathan (1989)

It's kind of insane how much this movie manages to be a beat-for-beat mashup of Alien/Aliens while still being entertaining and maintaining generally high production value in its own right. The case is generally pretty great—Daniel Stern is annoying as fuck, but is counterbalanced by Ernie Hudson's amazing lines. My main complaints are: 1., the Stan Winston creature FX are awesome but they didn't spend enough money here, you never really get a clear sense of the horror of the creature(s) due to each shot not lasting more than a few seconds and 2., although the ending is pretty awesome I think I would have preferred an evil-corporate-overlords-win version where the heroes think they're going to escape but get gunned down by corp assassins at the end. Ernie H's ignominious fate also kinda sucks. I'm also amazed that I've never heard of this movie before, was a cool surprise to watch.

[3/4] would watch again

Mulholland Drive is one of my favourite movies of all times. I can watch it again and again and never tire of it.
I first saw it at the on-site theater at the 2002 Roskilde Festival, which itself gave it a pretty unique atmosphere, and it's haunted me ever since.

I agree it's more accessible than at least a bunch of other Lynch movies, but I also think it manages to possess every single strength of his typical approach to film making. David Lynch is one of few directors who approaches cinema entirely as its own medium, and knows how to play on its strengths. He doesn't try to translate a written story to the big screen, and never settles for a straight narrative. He consistently plays on the tools available to portray the impressions and feelings that he wants the viewer to experience, without the need to compare it to anything else.

Yet, despite the abstract dream-like production, there is always a ton of thought behind everything going on in his movies, and if you sit down and try to analyze it, you'll easily find that everything happening makes sense, even if it's not in the same straight forward manner it would in most other movies. I don't feel like anything in Mulholland Drive is "weird just for the sake of being weird". Every scene serves a purpose, and it's beautiful.

I'm not good at analyzing movies, and even though "what's actually going on in Mulholland Drive" is actually fairly set in stone, it probably took me three viewings to truly get it.
Yet even watching it just once, though 19 year old Sumez couldn't make any sense of it, my subconsciousness immediately managed to understand that there was a consistent theme here, unlike what you'd find in a lot of other artsy movies.

I hate to be "that guy" in this discussion of Mulholland Drive, but before you go off the deep end trying to analyze it, understand that it started out as a pilot for a new Twin Peaks-style TV show, the network executives didn't bite, so Lynch tacked on an ending and turned it into a movie.

To me, the seams between the TV pilot and the movie ending are blatantly obvious. The beginning half is building up to a slow-burn mystery/drama, the ending is trying to tie up all the show's loose strings in a hurry.

It's a beautiful film but it's not something I'd say has a deep hidden meaning.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

It's not a "deep" hidden meaning. Like I said, it's actually pretty straight forward (I find GP's comparison to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood quite apt). The uniqueness is all in the way that it is told.

I'm kind of surprised about your take on it though.

The Lighthouse:

Speaking of arthouse movies with a confusing deeper meaning that's completely open to interpretation. If you want to see Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson sitting around farting and masturbating (respectively) for 2 hours in 4:3 black & white, this is the movie for you.

Seriously, this was a pretty amazing experience, and if you are lucky enough to live in one of the few countries of the world where this actually gets a theatrical release, I highly recommend going to see it on the big screen while you have the chance. It had one theater showing in my entire country, and it was completely sold out. I feel lucky that I managed to get a ticket.

They're annoyed yes. But I'm the only one in their life exposing them to interesting movies. Otherwise it's comic book movies and rom-coms. Are they going to watch The French Connection or Lifeforce on their own volition? Never!!

Also, it looks like Akira will be playing in a few weeks at a local theater (Logan). I might try to get them to come along. 8)
They promise the Japanese version. I might walk if they do a switcharoo with the dub. I've been wanting to see this on the big screen forever.

I like to go with the CROSSFIRE style - "Shakma... SHAKMA... SHAKMAAA!"

Shakma would own CYBER BIEBER in an AUGMENTED SUPER SOLDIER showdown, too! No comedowns for this bad boon - he should be tired, but all he is is WIRED! Image Speaking of, I thought Mackenzie Davis did ok, but holy fuck that script!

(A drone is spying from high above)

CYBER BIEBER: "There's a drone up there."
Sarah: "I don't hear anything...?"
CYBER BIEBER: "Well you're not an augmented supersoldier from the future, are you now?"

What the fuck? Image Yo, since we're in CLEVER CALLBACK country, how about taking the chance to work in "Trust me" ? Or if you really need our Absolute Defender to also be a snarky schoolkid, how about some bullshit on Sarah being hard of hearing? "TURN UP UR HEARING AID GRANDMA, LMAO"

Good B-films like T1&2 are more than the sum of their parts. Biehn, Cameron and Wisher sell the living fuck out of the hopelessly cornered animal that is Kyle Reese. Roboman is shooting at him. The cops are PWNing him with sick burns. Even when he gets some from Sarah, her 80s hairdo is violently smothering him. The poor bastard never caught a break. And yet he never once roasted anyone, because for all the bullshit in his tormented life, the script recalls that he's a professional soldier. -_- If he has to knee someone in the spine he just does it! Otherwise, he STFU! He doesn't go "wah wah wah i h8 u!" like CYBER BIEBER.

Never mind. We have reached that purely academic locus of incompetence and laziness, where it could be one or the other or both. Image I am sorry xxx1993, looks like it's gonna be a THUMBS DOWN from me! Still, on the Dr. Biruford & xxx1993 At The Movies show, a 50% reviewer approval is still better than 0%! Image

Agreed. T1&2 are cheese. Genisys is trash. Dark Fate is trash that shits all over the audience's cheese.

"Your inferior past will be discarded for a brave new future, in the REAL SEQUEL TO T2 PRODUCED BY JIMMY C" (■`ω´■)
"Oh thank fuck! Jimmy C! He'll save our cheese!" (^ω´ )

"A scurred iPhone does an apocalyptic thing and causes global ROBOWAR. In a grueling fightback, humanity rallies behind a saviour figure, who the desperate iPhone must now retroactively terminate via a time-travelling shapeshifter assassin. Meanwhile, humanity sends its own cyborg champion back in time to protect the young savior-to-be."

"This sounds fami-" (> ω >)
"YOU LITERAL HITLER" (◎ W ◎)

Oh sorry that last bit's not the movie's fault, it's the marketing department's. Just like every modern attempt at revered 80s cheese, the radioactive fallout surrounding its release has proven infinitely more amusing than the movie itself.

I hope it destroys Tim Miller's career, he appears to be about as dumb as Benioff & Wise and Rian Johnson. At least poor old Ridley Scott just wants to take pretty pictures and has other people making his movies shit. These guys and their ilk are brazenly vandalous fart-huffers and utterly cynical exploiters of cultural fixations du jour. They also have no balls.

"LET DE PAST DIE. KILL IT IF U HAVE 2" said Space Adam Lanza.

Some time later

"Sorry but this preteen boy needs to take three slugs to the chest. For brighter future!"

BEND OVER, YAMCHA

GREAT STORY: I'm not senile just yet, you young pricks! Miller admits he recycled shitcanned Deadpool action sequences for this movie. lmao! No wonder it plays out like a capeshit!

Normally I wouldn't care what becomes of them, but when I see Kathleen Kennedy calling D&B "great storytellers" (barf!), the schadenfreude wire is tripped and I want to see fire & blood.

TBH Rambo was the first new release I saw. EDIT: oh yeah, and Joker!

Gaming is my PASSIONE. Movies are just a nice pastime. I still prefer it when they don't suck though. Image The ethos of good B-film cheese is not unlike that of good arcade games, after all. Simple, vivid components arranged to compelling effect.

Also, I am a bit of a schadenfreude junkie, and these jokers' travails have long since entered JUICY DRAMA territory Image

I haven't enjoyed a single movie that came out this year. Haven't seen Rambo though.
