Thanks for the tip -- I did quite the peruse and could easily have dropped $100 but will refrain from the moment as I've not been showing restraint where I should.

Indeed! I think the scene where General Katana's hijacks and crashes a train was also supposed to be its homage to the Kurgan joyride scene, but that was at least funny since the passengers in the train die in such an over-the-top way. Now that I think about it, Kane doesn't really kill anyone during the present-day except for one of his henchmen, which is also pretty lame. You would think a bunch of bad guy immortals working together would be on the guard with each other, knowing that they have to fight each other at some point, but he just beheads him out of the blue without putting much of a fight.

Speaking of which, saw Highlander: Endgame just a while ago. I actually saw this one in theaters back in the day and I was surprised that the version that came in the collection was the theatrical cut (or at least, a version close to it), since I was under the impression that it was never released on home media. Apparently there were three different cuts of the movie (the theatrical cut, a producer's cut and a workprint), but none of them has Jacob Kell (the main baddie in this episode) doing all the superpowered shit he does in the trailer. Apparently they filmed those scenes to trick people into believing the movie was more epic than it actually was.

The movie basically exists to kill off Connor so they could have the TV show's Highlander (Duncan) be the protagonist from this point on (in case you didn't know, the show was set in a pseudo-alternate timeline where the events from the first movie still happened, but there were still more immortals left). They turned Connor into a sad sack of man who refuses to fight his enemy (Kell) by hiding in a sanctuary for immortals. Kell has a hateboner for Connor since Connor killed his dad and they paint this as a some sort of unheroic act, even though Kell's dad was responsible for having Connor's mom burned in the stake.

Quicknenings are now like experience points in an RPG and the Watchers (the organization that keeps track of immortals) has a database that tracks every confirmed kill made by each immortal, but they don't clarify whether these kills include accumulative kills made by the defeated or just the kills that the victors had made. Surely, the Kurgan would've been worth at least 600 beheadings.

Kell has like a gang of six quirky henchmen (I think they even had character bios on the official website), including Duncan's one true love in the movie (not to be confused by the one true love he had in the TV series) and another one played by Donnie Yen (who is completely wasted here), so you would think the two Highlanders would spend most of the movies before they eventually face Kell, but nope! They all died anti-climatically just before the final battle. Coincidentally, their deaths add up to 666 confirmed kills for Kell (because he's evil of course).

I would've loved to had seen the alternate cuts with the extra scenes, but I doubt it would've salvaged the story that much (especially if it has a tacky happy ending), so I don't have much desire to track them down. Compared to the other bad Highlander sequels, at least it was mercifully short.

Have you seen Kawajiri's Highlander anime? It sounds like it should be nirvana for diehard Ninja Scroll fans, but I recall being just okay with it. Certainly didn't dislike it, just didn't blow me the fuck away like Ninja Scroll still does on each and every rewatch.

Most fondly-remembered scene was an affecting wordless reminiscence on McLeod's part, ending with him flatly telling his overly talky buddy that he's full of shit.

I've seen the anime once when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, but I actually don't really remember much about it. I think I might had founded it a bit too similar to Ninja Scrolls (which I need to get the Blu-ray one of these days), but it's still probably the best thing to had come out from the whole Highlander franchise since the first movie. Unfortunately it was not part of the 5-movie pack that I bought and I'm not sure if the stand-alone DVD is still in print (might as well just download it). It seems Japan got an exclusive Director's Cut, but I'm not sure how it differs from the international cut other than it adds 10 minutes of new scenes. It's pretty stupid that they even cut the movie for the international market, considering it's not like they had to trim down the running time for theaters (since it was a straight-to-DVD release anyway).

Rewatching it on Youtube (Image) while doing other stuff, via the customarily serviceable Manga UK dub, it's all coming back. MacLeod's tormented flashbacks are bloodening, and it's satisfying to watch his past ordeals flesh out his otherwise flat persona, but they're tethered to a not particularly interesting quasi-Hokuto no Ken APOCALYPTIC NYC, complete with sewer level and giant crocs. Plus annoying kid. The Ninja Scroll resemblances are unmistakable and kinda unflattering, with MacLeod and Old Sensei very by the book compared to easygoing, understated Jubei and that dirty cheating muhfucka Dakuan, and Not HNK opposite Scroll's fusion of rich necro-feudal style and no-nonsense boss rush.

Very acceptable, just kinda stock considering the source material's potential and Kawajiri's prior mastery. The glimpses of various eras are superbly done, as brief as they are, and Marcus is a convincing big bad with a well-judged shade of sympathy. More interesting than Scroll's diabolical Genma, albeit woefully lacking his killer FOXHOUND-calibre backup.

EDIT: tbh I think this would've worked better as a linear, episodic series of snapshots. Some of the historic combat is wild, and the continuity and contrast between MacLeod's unquenchable fury and Marcus's divine aspiration is great. Every time it returns to Not HNK, I go back to my work. Image

Fun Manga UK dub. They seemed to have a knack for Kawajiri's stuff. I'm sub-only when motivated, but they always take the edge off of zero-effort dub lookups. "You were never exactly smart, but at least you weren't an arse-hole" intoned the stately English gent. ImageImage

From the original Highlander, I got the impression that the "holy ground" taboo was just tradition, but when MacLeod tried to break it in Kawajiri's movie some higher power fried his ass with lightning. That was kind of interesting, but little else from the anime stayed with me compared to Ninja Scroll or Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Watched The Big Lebowski. Funny, especially John Goodman's character. The biggest reason I'm glad I saw it, though, is because it introduced me to this song.

Toy Story 4: ****

Easily the best animated movie I've seen this year. As of late Pixar has been rather hit or miss, but this one is just as good as any of the other Toy Story movies, and the animation and design is excellent throughout.

Might look it up later then. Incidentally, they have the whole live-action series on Youtube too (which can access from this playlist, which for some reason doesn't include the pilot episode with Christopher Lambert). I have no intention to binge through the whole thing (since it's mostly just a "bad guy of the week" show without much of an on-going storyline) but it's nice to know it's there whenever I need a fix. Incidentally, the third episode, which has something of a "drugs are bad, mmmkay" theme to it, guest-stars the actor who portrayed the bad guy from Missing in Action II.
Mortificator wrote:From the original Highlander, I got the impression that the "holy ground" taboo was just tradition, but when MacLeod tried to break it in Kawajiri's movie some higher power fried his ass with lightning.
That also happens in the third movie. where Connor's sword is destroyed by lightning when he fights Kane in a church. But then Endgame ignores that and has Kell kill a bunch of immortals on holy ground without any repercussion (which also contradicts the TV show it's supposed to be part of the same continuity). It depends on the convenience of the writer at the moment.

Wasn't in the mood of seeing The Source tonight, but I might watch it tomorrow, since I heard it's a complete trainwreck. I'm surprised it even got made, since Adrian Paul wanted to be done with the franchise after the fourth movie.

Day of the Dead.

First time. Gross sfx, cool score. For a 'Day' very under ground. A lot of a-holing 'round. The eggheads and uniforms are easy to dismiss, with motives and behavior. The two civies don't get a pass from me. Living "The Ritz" by keeping their heads down in conflict. I was sure I wouldn't miss 'em. Stand-out sympathy was obviously Bub, may he roam eternal. I laughed aloud when he was presented with a paperback copy of 'Salem's Lot'. I'd salute you anytime, sir!

I ended up seeing Day of the Dead before Dawn, and although I consider Dawn the cooler movie overall - man, its goofy blue zombies and paint 'n playdoh gore were unexpected. Savini must've studied hard in the intervening years! Maybe it's like AHNULD visibly flinching like a WEENIE when firing his gun in The Terminator, then having TNT explode next to his head for five years and coming back to T2 all HARDCORE. Savini? He was a combat photographer in the Vietnam war. Seen his share. He said that's what he brought to his art. Though fake, it has to have this feel to him. Heard that in the making of the 90 Night, his direction debut.

Oh shit, I knew he was a Vietnam veteran but had no idea of his exact job. :o Explains a lot. As for Dawn vs Dead gore, I wonder if the former's infamously harried production schedule compromised things. Then again, he did a ton of work between the two films. I suppose it's possible he just got better at his craft.

I saw Joker. It was good. All the hand-wringing on how this movie glamorizes mass shooters was pretty stupid. I remember one writer, I think he's with Slate, was saying that if the director didn't stop bitching about PC culture the movie was going to bomb, lol, moron.

This Joker had basically no relationship to the character in the comics or Nolan-verse, which is fine. It was an excellent cinematic experience and the story worked well as a self-contained movie that vaguely alludes to some of the character's history.

This is more just a weird personal preference of mine but I didn't like that Joker was sort of a dumbass. He's self-delusional and reactive - anything but a strategic mastermind. He gets away with most of his crimes by accident and not through planning and intelligence.

Good movie, great homage to Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, with amazing dancing.

Only a casual comics reader, but this niggled me a bit too. Very Travis Bickle (which in-movie basically works for obvious reasons, haha). Invisible Loner receives +1 buff to his "Get Away With Shit" stat. Didn't mind writing it off as origin story flubs ala Batman busting up his ribs escaping Gordon in the first Nolan film.

Not sure whether this should get a sequel/be connected to other Batman movies at all, but the morbid Road Runner kick of the last sequence is kinda tempting. My favourite scene is still
Spoiler
the rioters pulling Arthur/Joker from the guts of the wrecked cop car in a primal rebirth ceremony. Genuinely rad cinema when he revives, takes stock, then busts out his dance for the adoring throng.

Paired with his spontaneous engineering of the train shooting, that's just about good enough a lead-in to "Joker" proper for me.

Haha, glad to hear it's not just me. That favorite scene of yours was also a highlight for me. But again, this birthing ceremony comes about by accident. I guess it's still moving when your kid is born, after knocking up your girl by accident. But perhaps it'd be more idyllic if the birth was planned.

I never saw it as part of Nolan's Batman universe which I assume is fair enough... the last entry was what, 7 years ago? This entry is violent, and aimed for a different demographic. I guess people got irked that this one drew a very clear line between mental illness and violence. I can't argue that the catalyst for the violence was off. Still somewhat disturbing, but very entertaining. Interested to see all the extremes Joaquin Phoenix did for the role which I assume will only come out in the BluRay extras. I'm sure there's more than just the physicality and weird disjointed shots of his shoulders. On that note, I can't say he totally dethrones Keith Ledger's Joker. Apples and oranges? I believe the director's interpretations were totally different.

Me, personally, I don't give two licks about hype, golden statuettes, or if dear old uncle Melvin says "It's th bomb, son!". First, when I heard about the project I felt indifferent. Akin to "That's silly. Whever." And for the longest time that was it. Now it's like the Invasion of the PR People and I'm informed that Bobby de Niro is involved and 'silly' turns to 'suspicious'. And a picture is forming in my mind. Brilliant articulated by this:

No, I haven't seen it. And I don't plan to. It's not enticing at all to me. I go watch Scorcese whenever I feel like it. I don't need a reminder.

You know what I find ha-ha funny? The more these pictures or series' are sprouting, controversial in intention or buffoonish, the more I get away from them and to the source. I mean, seriously. That was the plan, right? To sell the crummy stuff that's been around for ages. And it works, to me it does. I take my pick and it's fun, once you know who or what to avoid. Strange fate, or isn't it?

Highlander: The Source - Supposedly the worst movie in the franchise. In fact, the film's U.S. distributor had so little confidence in it, that they skipped the theatrical release and just dumped it as a SyFy movie of the week. The fact all the Highlander sequels, including The Quickening, had their apologists online, except this one, was pretty telling, with the highest-rated reviews on Letterboxd all giving it just three stars, which is barely adequate. Having finally seen it, I can definitely concur with that sentiment.

I get the feeling that nobody really wanted to make another Highlander movie after the fourth one, but they still made this one out of contractual obligations or because they wanted to get some more mileage out of Adrian Paul and Peter Wingfield before they became too old to be believable as ageless immortals (which was also a problem evident in Endgame with Christopher Lambert, who aged considerably since the first movie).

The plot deals with Duncan joining a group of immortals (including Methos) in their search for the so-called Source, which I think is supposed to be the source of all their immortality or something (I'm not sure and I don't really care). It feels as if the screenwriters were more concerned with throwing a bunch of crap into the wall to see what sticks without bothering to make sure if there was a coherent story behind everything. It's not even worth watching for the swordfights, since they put too many ridiculous fast-forwarding effects and jump cuts that are way distracting. The antagonist (some superpowered immortal named The Guardian) seems to had been deliberately written to take a piss at Highlander fans with metajokes at the expense of the franchise, but even then he feels rather forced and forgettable.

Apparently The Source was intended to be the first in a new trilogy of Highlander movies, but at some point they must've realized that nobody was going to be in a mood for a sequel, which explains the abrupt ending that basically just summarizes the plot of the whole movie.

Peter Wingfield apparently hated The Source so much, that he basically filmed his own epilogue to the TV show with two other recurring actors from the show, Jim Byrnes (who is also in the movie) and Elizabeth Gracen, out of his own apartment that basically invalidates the whole movie. You can view it here.

You're welcomed. It was quite a journey to hell, but it was an amusing one at that. I was reluctant to watch The Source without at least rewatching some key episodes of the TV show first, but my concerns were unfounded, since it barely brings up any relevant plot points from the show aside from the characters. All you need to know is that Duncan MacLeod (not Connor) is the Highlander in this one and that Methos and Joe are his friends from the show (which is pretty much how Endgame treated those characters anyway).

They actually tricked Adrian Paul the same way they tried to trick Clancy Brown into appearing in The Quickening. He was actually reluctant to do the fifth movie without approving the script first (since he was disappointed with how Endgame turned out) and what they did is that sent him a script that was completely different (and apparently much better) than the one they actually filmed before the director (the same guy who directed Lawnmower Man, who never did anything else of note) did a switcharoo once Adrian Paul arrived on the set.

Panzer/Davis were really desperate to turn Highlander into a massive media franchise in the vein of Star Wars or something, but they didn't know what they were doing since the people running the asylum were more businessmen rather than visioneers. Despite that, I'm actually looking forward to how they'll handle the eventual reboot, which is being directed by the John Wick guy. I'm a bit concerned when they talked about recasting Connor and the Kurgan, since it implies that it's just going to be a straight remake of the original when what they really should be doing is just redo the entire premise with a whole new story, but I heard the John Wick movies are pretty good and judging from the interviews he's giving, it seems he actually has a concrete plan for a series, which is what the previous incarnation of the franchise lacked. Who knows? Given the way things are going with Star Wars nowadays (is anyone actually looking forward to Episode IX), maybe we'll actually see the day that Highlander might actually become bigger than Star Wars.
