Ok, found another manga with an old main character and no perverted designs that revolves around martial arts, it's called Peerless Dad and it's pretty fun and good.

As the name implies, it follows a father, though it's quite a way to the past, anyways, he was trained by his really strong father that he never beat until his dad died and thus he became a mercenary thinking he was weak, until he got some wins making him think of becoming a full blown martial artist and entering Murim(basically the life and world of all martial artists) and his first opponent just happened to be the very strongest martial artist in the world, or one of the strongest, who easily beat him without telling him how strong he was.

And thus, the main character quit being a martial artist and became a mercenary...thinking he is incredibly weak or at best average even though he can beat almost everyone, and he finds a woman he falls for, they get married, she dies giving birth to triplets.

And then the actual story starts as one single dad tries to raise three kids while giving them the best education he can, becoming a guard for a master who wants to hide his skills as he finds himself getting further and further involved in life and death battles without realizing how badass he actually is(for a long while, it takes a while to realize he is better than average at least) while trying to be just a great father.

It's basically a family slice-of-life series, only the father is a badass martial artist that sometimes has awesome battles, and no, there is no fanservice of any kind, not even any "moe" designs in case anyone was wondering, just straight up fights and family niceness.

Somebody recommended me Wolf's Rain last month and I've managed to get through the first 12 episodes. Enjoying the heck out of it. Does this one get better or worse as it goes along?

I still can't help but recommend Beastars. It's so good.
The MC is so damn stupid, but you can't help but like him. I've read a few mediocre series lately that I can't be arsed to try and name here, and Beastars reminds me what an actually good manga looks like.

I'm also reading Eden's Zero, which is a fairly mediocre shonen by the guy who did Rave Master and Fairy Tail.
Again, it's mediocre. Still better than Fairy Tail so far.

is the same studio behind this as the studio that did the Junji Ito collection? If so I will have to reserve in my anticipation. The trailer is stylish at least.

See how parents make everything better?

Maybe I'll watch this one, kind of feel like revisiting the spiral insanity. Haven't even caught up with You Will Hear The Voice of the Dead's translations yet..

This is the furry isekai I mentioned earlier. Written by the author of KonoSuba. If you like KonoSuba, you'll probably enjoy this one a little. If you don't, you probably won't.

Of course there's massive fanservice from the titular dad.

I always think this one has surprisingly little sociopathy for a wuxia book, but then I remember it's South Korean and that's why the protagonist isn't going around brutally murdering everybody who gives him the smallest slight.

Chinese novels are really over the top on average - I theorize the one child policy is partly to blame.

I picked up reading Useless Ponko.
A pretty interesting slice-of-life about an old guy who's living with an obsolete maid robot after his wife died.
It's dramatically better than I expected going in. Reasonably funny, but it has a bit of a melancholy tone since both the old man and the old robot are on their last legs at this point.
She's totally useless, but she's great.
I really like this story. Hits on all the right notes for me.

Also, Tokedase! Mizore-chan ("Melt-away Mizore"). Another slice-of-life, this one's about a cute kid who rescues a snowman from melting in the summer heat that turns out to be a yuki-onna. Fun times were had by all, it's largely about a kid's summer life in Japan, but with a character that has to try her hardest to not melt away.
Eventually, other weird characters show up, like a vampire girl and a kappa girl.
It's not absolutely amazing, but it's still pretty fun.

Armitage III (OVA series)

Image

Always remembered this one from the old VHS catalogues BITD, sounded DEEP AF to ten year-old me. Watched the dub on a whim, glad I didn't expend any more effort than a quick YT search, it's daft as a fuckin brush. Image IN A GOOD WAY THOUGH Image The absolute shallowest take on Blade Runner possible via cute fightan sexbot and her amusingly AHNULDesque buddy ROSS SYLLABUS vs Not Roy Batty, a robocunt who just won't die! He comin' back wired up to all kinda machines, and shit! Hotpantsu-chan is a cute mascot, Not Roy has some wild moves (and a genuinely moving little coda to his nutty MO HUMAN THAN HUMAN arc!), but ROSS SYLLABUS is a genuine surprise hit - this motherfucker has no personality AT ALL yet sounds like Homer Simpson, it's great!

BOUT 2 HIT DAT Image

Handles the subject of HOT SEXBOT FUCKIN with great maturity and dignity. Image My sides! Decent background noise.

Armitage III is such a bag full of neat things and missed opportunities.

I like it quite a bit, but I think I like the building blocks of the product more than the actual product? Like, Naomi have a great cyberpunky visual design but her character is flat and at times frustrating. Her story is decent but it could've been so much more. The mars city setting is really interesting and has some dope verticality to it but it's just a backdrop. And so forth.

I once saw a TV airing of Armitage III: Polymatrix (which was the English VO-only movie version that starred Elizabeth Berkeley as Armitage herself and Kiefer Sutherland as her love interest) a long-long time ago and all I remember about it (besides some cool action scenes) was the plot was basically a murder mystery involving death of a pregnant Replicant. It's actually the first thing that came to my mind while watching Blade Runner 2049, since as far as I know the original movie never said anything about Replicants having reproductive ability (can't speak for the novels though). Makes me wonder if the screenwriters were taking notes.

I got a nasty giallo vibe from those drawn-out murder scenes, made me wonder how deliberate it was. Echoing Ji, another from its grab-bag of neat but not especially well-realised genre standards.

Shingeki no Kyojin Chapters 57-121, current (great summary of recent events!)

"OH LAWD ITS GOTTEN RLY STUPID NOW" said Old Pal. "O RLY?" I replied. I had to suspend disbelief with this series from the get-go, simply for the Survey Corps meat-grinder being packed full of young women who proceed to get horribly, predictably butchered. Humanity on the brink of extinction. Clawing at the edge of the pit. Back to the front, ladies! Image What the fuck? Image Who's running this war, that bitch Lucas? :o That said, I liked it, and was curious as to where it'd gone in the past five years that some would burn their Levi dakimakuras. Marathonned it over the last couple weeks.

Image

Enjoying it tbh. Image Same earnestly fiery quasi-shonen with a sharply depicted cast, super-cool technology and a winning primal horror hook. We are going to eat you! Liking what he's done with Reiner and Eren. Ol' Pal was aghast at the brick/windshield-subtlety of Nazi Marley, but tbh it seems par for the course in this sort of mecha-shonen? Sieg Zeon!

Caught up on the relevant anime episodes after, handsome work! Hiroyuki Sawano's OST is bloodening stuff. RIP various cool bros. Image

Looking forward to seeing the current arc animated, particularly the scenes of pummelling conventional war and cozy downtime in Marley.

Speaking of conceptually sound but in the end...unfortunate anime - Macross II: Lovers Again.

I've had this thing lying around on a number harddrives in various digital iterations since basically forever but never got around to sit down with it until a recent episode of the Anime World Order Podcast finally gave me the push I needed.
I've had the soundtrack (parts of it anyway), both in digital and more recently in physical form, for a really long time also. Speaking of which, it's really great. Absolutely deserves a listen. The JVC/US renditions release of the soundtrack is missing the odd track, like the awesomely late 80s song Soko ni Aru no ga Mirai dakara but instead we get another song, Déjà Vu —(please be close to me) as our last track and it's just so mellow, rock-ballad-ish and totally loopable. If you happen to like a sexy saxophone with pleny of reverb then Only Your Friend is your jam.

Character design is solid too, if you're into what Haruhiko Mikimoto is cooking. Mecha design is more of a mixed bag IMO but it works.
So, with all this - it's just so unfortunate that everything else is a bit rubbish. Not like, complete garbage, but there are so many moments where just a different line or action - or framing thereof - could've made a world of difference. The same conclusion reached bythe AWO-crew. And again, it's so unfortunate because a lot of the ideas and concepts presented are genuinely interesting and fun.

Halfway through the first part of the "movie version" (they just removed the OP and ED and stitched the episodes together) there is an advert for a music and flight performance on the moon. I love this advert for some reason, it's energetic, but when we actually reach that point it's underwhelming. In fact, the feeling of being underwhelmed is constant. The animation doesn't really make the designs justice, but it's never atrocious. The screenplay is weirdly jumpy, character actions and motivations sometimes very questionable and the mixing of the soundtrack feels at times unprofessional, with music stopping abruptly or being faded in or out really quickly.

That said though, I intend to sit down and watch the remaining half of the show soon.
If you've watched Megazone part III, or the at the moment topical Armitage III, you know this slightly frustrating feeling.

^ utena gets a bit heavier as it goes on, and what you may be watching the show for now may not be what the show capitalizes on, later. it goes in really hard on themes like consent, incest, abuse, child rape (Spoiler 1), free will & personal agency, and redemption. just about everything determining an adolescent's life that they're only on the cusp of grasping during said adolescence. the metaphors get more heavy-handed and the flagrant depictions get a lot more intense. the show never stops having good fights & good music, but if you're watching for the light drama in a fun school environment, that starts peeling away to heavier material.

the movie is considered a retelling by some and a sequel by others, and i believe ikuhara has commented on it being able to be seen either way. of note is that the anime is a joint between ikuhara (who got tired of having little personal freedom working on sailor moon) and the mangaka (Spoiler 2), and ikuhara is a lot more... avant garde and directly sexual than the mangaka, who largely keeps his reins pulled in on the show. the movie is full ikuhara and, while good, it's a taste of how the show would have been a little too unrestrained and ridiculous without someone tying him down (similarly, the manga is boring because the mangaka doesn't have a real flair - the show is the best of both worlds).

the show is divided into three arcs, and the middle or "black rose" arc is often considered the weakest by fans, while the first and final arcs are kind of divided based on who you talk to and which strengths they think the show was best at. the first arc has a lot of weird abuses that go unchecked by numerous characters, and a lot of that is set-up for analyzing that abuse in the final season. i feel like despite the darkness the show ends up dwelling in, it's ultimately very optimistic and only has one, maybe two actual villains - everyone else is flawed but ultimately shown as very redeemable and learning from their mistakes or learning how to take control of their lives. utena is something that i think very much believes in your problematic friends being worth saving, worth listening to, and worthy of love & forgiveness - which makes it blow my mind that it's very popular with purity culture sjw's, especially considering their extreme sensation of being averse to anything remotely sexualizing youth (which this show constantly does and is one of ikuhara's most signature 'things').

something to keep in mind while watching is that nanami is younger than everyone else (13) and it's part of why why she's so... the way she is. she has some of the most growth of any character. another thing to keep in mind is that while the movie makes it extremely literal, ohtori academy is supposed to be a magical place that can manipulate feelings and memory. this is very important to remember at the end of the second arc and the end of the show as to why some characters act almost as if certain things never happened.

Spoiler 1
Spoiler
touga (did you notice he's voiced by dio?) is raped by his father. this is only implied in the anime but spelled out explicitly in the manga. it's a big part of his character and if you miss this you miss a lot. the show also moves past other things really quickly, like how much saionji is bullied by touga when younger and what this does to him as a person.
Spoiler 2
Spoiler
really interesting thing to note is that for the entire duration of the manga, the mangaka ardently believed that utena and anthy were only friends and not actually in love. she changes her mind when she pens the adaptation to the movie, and finally thinks they're lovers

As someone too daft to spot any level of subtext and meaning weaved into a work, I'm just impressed by your write up. I don't remember much from when I watched Utena and from the movie I just remember being entertained what literary happened on the screen, not what it meant.

I've been reading Akira. The manga is much, much better than the movie.
There was a time, in the era of great chaos, when the Earth and the moon were at war with each other. A daredevil from the moon piloted a bizarre aircraft. It was feared, and because of its shape, called... Einhander.
