DJMAX Portable

Don't know how this one slipped under my radar... The flash video (It has jiggling boobs near the end O___O) on that site says Jan.14th, but I went to play-asia earlier today and ended up placing a pre-order for the Prestige Box Set...

..yes... this will end up again pushing back my pre-orders for Rajirugi, Ibara, and Under Defeat... I haven't even pre-ordered Gradius Portable yet, but I guess I'll be OK as long as I get them in before the respective release dates..

But if this and Gradius Portable require firmware updates on the PSP, then I might really do it since PSP Revolution can now be sacrificed in favour of DJMAX..

Just an update to an old old thread...

I finally got a regular edition today, my special edition is still waiting for delivery.

Anyway, I've played it for an hour and a half or so, and this is the best game for the PSP that you've probably never heard of. Very polished presentation and gameplay that's on par with Bemani. Plus it only requires 2.0 firmware to play.

Check out some gameplay videos (not me) here and here.
This game is a must own for rhythm game fans!!

I think there are 50-some odd songs. A good number of them are in English, some have no vocals, and a few are in Korean.

Welcome back to PSP owners club PPPP, and you've one-upped me with that JP PSP too :p

My box set finally came in today too, so I can sell off the regular one now... that's the price I pay for being impatient.. But I'm going to need a whole lot more patience to unlock the last 3 songs I'm missing. Have you checked out the unlock requirements? Totally whack....

just got my frickin psp, and i thought the thread deserved a bump.

out of the 4 games i have right now, dj max is easily my favorite. i think it is going to be the standard when i don't feel like carrying around extra discs. ^_^

and damn it is hard as well. i figured the adjustment was going to be similar to beatmania, but i was wrong.

Oh yah, once you've played it for 20 or 30 hours and are getting a bit sick of unlocking stuff, go grab the save file from GameFAQs.

But make sure you play it enough first so that you experience the proper satisfaction and frustration of unlocks :)

Reviving an ancient thread, but pre-orders for DJMax Portable 2 are now open at play-asia for $49.90.

Linkie

No word on whether there will be a special edition similar to the Prestige set of the first game, but I'll be damned if I don't get my hands on whatever is released first!

Some more infos:

Limited editions announced at play-asia, but pre-orders not open yet.

Some info with nice pictures can be found here.

Again, like the first Prestige Collector's Edition, it looks like this one will be a very beautiful and high quality Limited Edition (two different LEs, in fact).

I believe this game will also have 2-player battles, but I suspect both parties will need a UMD. I guess I won't be cancelling my regular edition pre-order when the LE pre-orders are open.

You do know that you can get DJMAX PC and go against other players for free, right?

Fucking Hell! Pre-orders for the two Orpheus packages opened at play-asia last Thursday, and completely sold out a few hours later. I had midterms to mark and a midterm of my own for Friday, and then I was out of town for the weekend, so I didn't check at all.

Damn it, I really wanted this LE :( :( :(

Of course, you're only restricted to the "Free" songs, as you need a credit card to play the "Premium" songs.

Old thread resurrection for DJ Max Fever finally hitting the EU PSN.

Downloaded this baby in the middle of this week and I've had an absolute ball with the game so far. Quite shocked at my lack of skills though. I've got it set on Easy as an overall difficulty setting and I'm playing 4 button mode with the easiest charts for each track and I find anything over the rating of about 6 seriously challenging.

Fortunately the songs are infinitely replayable and seriously catchy so I'm enjoying practising songs over and over to improve my pattern recognition.

I also really like the ability to change characters, gears, skins, etc as it keeps everything nice and fresh. Certainly a steal for £16, and it seems to have a lot of bug fixes over the boxed release that never came out here.

Sometimes I think that the PSP is one of my favourite consoles. Disgaea, DJ Max, Rockband, Ridge Racer 2, Star Ocean 2, etc. Time sinks one and all.

Any pros here that can offer some tips?

I'm certainly not a pro, although I've played the four Japanese/Korean PSP release a hell of a lot. The only real tip is to keep playing - there aren't any tricks or strategies that anybody else can recommend, it really is as simple as staying with it. Eventually, you'll find yoruself making small breakthroughs, where previously impossible sections of songs just click together for you, your fingers and eyes bybpass your brain and link to each other directly. Then you can start increasing the difficlty or attempting the trickier tracks.

Actually, that's not true. There is one thing you can do to improve your play, and that's listen to the tracks without playing the game. I'vee not bought Fever yet, but I'm presuming it has a jukebox mode, same as the others? If not, all the tracks are on YouTube. Because of the way the game plays - because the music effectively falls to pieces if you're not playing properly - it can be hellishly difficult to figure out where you're going wrong, what timing is expected of you by each particular track. If you listen to them a few times first, you're better prepared to get yourself back into the swing of things if you miss a couple of beats in a row.

I really hope that 3 gets rid of the awful grind that plagued the challenge modes in Classiquai and Black Square, and returns to the simpler, less repetetive challenge of DJMP 1 and 2.

Followed the advice today and listened to the soundtrack on the way to and from work, helped me pick up on a few of the synth lines that I've been massacring in button mash panic mode.

I've been looking into getting Trilogy and it's starting to seem inevitable. All those songs for so little money...

Cool, I might get back into this.

Any information on whether the game content will be different between regions?

Took delivery of the Hot Tunes limited ed myself today - it's a lovely package again, putting almost every other videogame LE to shame in every single regard (although, awesome box notwithstanding, it's not on quite the same level as the Orpheus package, as far as content is concerned). The game itself, though, is apparently just a slightly rejigged version of Fever - I presumed as much when I noticed that it uses X for confirm and O for cancel, when the Korean releases usually follow the Japanese layout - so I'm pretty glad that I held off on getting the US release or downloading it from PSN.

Has anybody here bought Trilogy? Is it basically just DJMP1 and DJMP2 ported to the PC, and the online game, with no genuinely new content?

Trilogy is fairly different, I think. It also has exclusive songs.

Tempted now.

Annoyingly, Hot Tunes is buggy - I've had it freeze up on me *and* crash my PSP. The freeze came towards the end of a run on Sunny Side - the screen stuck as it was and the music keept running off the UMD. The crash was odd: the track select screen showed Sunny Side (again) as a square icon, rather than the disc shape it was meant to be, and the image inside the frame, well, I don't actually know where it'd come from. A totally different song, though, and not an actual disc image. I selected it, thinking that it might have been some kind of strange unlockable - it didn't look broken, as such, it just looked different - and my PSP switched itself off.

This isn't hugely promising for DJMP3, because Black Square also had problems (albeit significantly more damaging ones). I'm not sure why, but Pentavision's attention to detail on this kind of thing seems to have taken a bit of a dive.
