I've watched a bunch of nonsense anime lately, but also a few good ones that I didn't immediately forget after the episodes ended.

March Comes In Like a Lion
I hesitate to call it a slice-of-life story since the term is kind of abused nowadays, but that's what it is, a slice-of-life story of a young professional shogi player. Shogi is more of a backdrop for the story rather than the point of it, there are many episodes where there's no shogi at all. That said, there are some where it's mostly about shogi. In any case, it's a good story and the characters are interesting and feel realistic. The art style is kind of unique and might put some people off, but I personally liked it. Netflix has all 44 episodes of it, so that was nice.

Made in Abyss
Really awesome adventure story that starts off like a kid's fantasy novel, but soon turns towards more darker themes and imagery. Imagine you start reading The Hobbit, then halfway through the book you notice you're reading Dark Souls. The story doesn't come to its conclusion in the anime and it really left me wanting more. The manga it's based on is still going as well.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

III I only watched in the shitty US dub. It definitely doesn't have the magik of the first 2, but I'm kind of a completist. Tempted to go through it in Japanese now that the language barrier isn't there.

Other stuff:
Arata na Tabi / New Adventure (TV Movie). Pretty meh, but only 90 minutes.
Eien Ni / Yamato Forever: A bit better but still not the caliber of the originals. Pretty long at well over 2 hours.
Kanketsuhen / Final: Quite redeeming. Clocks in at like 2 hours and 45 minutes. Trailer

I watched the remake (2199 OVA series) and was pretty unimpressed, basically because...

This thread makes me think that manic depressive syndrome attacks (of which bouts of heavy nostalgia are a symptom) must follow precise cycles.

I guess that I could plot how often you lot get to post the "omg anime were bettah in the aightaisss" (sung a la Calvin Harris) rant, find a few references to cite, write up an introduction and voila'! I could have my first paper in general psychology.

I will refrain from making more caustic comments, because I am currently getting nausea, sickness, and so on whenever I see pictures moving on screen (animated or not...). I agree with Miyazaki on anime, at this juncture of my life.

So, instead of spending the next few days ranting about the usual stuff, go and read some books. Manga are OK if by Nobuyuki Fukumoto.

Afterwards, do send me your desired length for the canes. I will collect them over the week-end. Distribution is next monday at the park!

Lol angry! Don't include me in this, I can enjoy stuff of any period as long as it's good, don't care what year it was made.
Although honestly I've had trouble finding much material of interest in recent years, the rare decent stuff is drowned in a massive ocean of cringy cheap otaku shit, and seems it's getting worse every year.
It's like the animu industry is broke both in money and ideas, frantically producing any crap to generate revenue for its survival.

Well, do consider that up to the early 90s there were around 40-50 new series every cours (quarter), and optimistically a good (i.e. properly written, animated, directed, able to treat adult themes, featuring proper characterization and not ready-made personalities, etc.) 4-5 series were produced.

Currently, there can be 2-3 good series out of roughly 350-400 series. The subjective perception of good series being hard to find may probably lie in the fact that the production values lowered, but the amount of stuff produced to just turn in a quick dime has literally decuplicated.

There is then the Otaku factor, of which we have probably discussed a lot.

Rather than discussing that, though, I will mention that Jacques Attali wrote a paper in the '70s explaining why pop was going to become louder and dumber.

Mathematically speaking (well, not in the most precise manner!), pop music production revolves around using a certain set of notes and combinations thereof, avoiding at all costs experiments that might end up in financial losses. The result, of course, is exhausting the possible combinations of notes, and being forced to sell stagnation in one way or another.

I think that we could easily extend this financial model to anime and, duh, to any medium in which the average consumer is driven to abhor innovation (EDIT: by very risk-averse companies controlling consumers' behaviour, of course). I have not seen very recent numbers, but I understand that Manga are actually crossing dire straits, and so do american comics. Innovation forces in these media are emerging to simply invert these tendencies, but in other media stagnation effects are slower to take hold. Anime will probably keep "inbreeding" concepts until stagnation will cause a shrinking market, I conjecture.

Now, the one and true reason for why I do not bitch about old anime is that I have basically seen it all, back in the day. I also have a general understanding of why ultra-capitalistic approaches to entertainmnent are not bound to get...results palatable to those outside the masses. Anyone mentally older than 8 should understand as much, really. Rants offer evidence than being older than 8 is a preciously rare skill, on the intarwebs.

The real question is: will you be the one teaching the basics of petanque, once we will spend our days bitching about the past in the park? We cannot just bitch (ehrm, reminisce) about days past, I would say.

...Still no anime on petanque? I am kinda surprised. Imagine a french-japanese tres joli kiddo showing how awesome petanque is, to a group of "mixed-race" lolis who are already well-endowed BBW's at a very tender age. I can already see a petanque-mania taking the world by storm, with basque hats and Pernod selling like nobody's business!

EDIT #2: Petanque sugoi desu n'est?. We have the title, we just need to pick 20 or so templates for episodes from the usual stuff, the usual catalogue of princes, tsunderes and so on, school setting with a private school in which everybody is filthy rich, but our hero is somehow a working class outlier going against the system. Plus, everybody has gaijin parents so we can have some kind of international dimension to it (!).

The arc with our heroes battling the French petanque underworld will feature Lupin the III, for mad cross-over revenue!

EDIT #3: one more rant I will go to sleep, promised. A while ago I quite literally dreamt that some studio decided to animate Les citees obscures (the Benoit and Peeters series)*, in a Franco-Belgian-Japanese production, and that it was actually successful and widely praised as a masterpiece. The series took 15 years to completion, though. I woke up wondering what exactly my subconscious was trying to tell me (...read the series again?).

*No accents or diacritics, as I cannot be bothered to figure out French letters' positions on a Swedish keyboard, while typing from China while using an OS set-up with a English user interface, duh.

I can enjoy anything as long as it's well done and appeals to my aesthetic. My last stint in playing the shit out of video games was PSO2... and a shitload of it! On that note, most anime these days does not appeal to my aesthetic in the least, and I do find most of the stories a bit pedantic. Even more so, the computer doing all of the work and removing the human element has hampered it for me, just like it has most anything else. DJing was cool when it required skill. Now anyone with a pulse can (and unfortunately does), do it. Same can be said for photography. While ironically having a child is what got me into photography, and the easiest way to do it was with a DSLR, I quickly grew tired of every year a sharper lens and a cleaner image coming out. So being consistent with my complaining, I use film cameras for everything except bullshit phone shots. Some things are worth taking the time for. I like a bit of grit in my art. Polished, modern anime offers zero.

I was almost wondering after that ep if Sunsoft were influenced for their take on Spy Hunter, Battle Formula (Famicom). The car's MAXIMUM TUNED form is a blue armoured killer with a front grill reminiscent of BC's GURIFON, and if the boxart had showed that version of it (rather than its sportier red default), it'd resemble a still from the ep. The manual's back cover illustration of the driver walking away from his machine is quite similar too. Not that "badass supercar that fights helicopters" is the most unique subject matter, haha.

The machine design on this show is so consistently rad.

Yeah, we're a bunch of old men stuck in the past now. As Gigguk once said, when you've seen nothing, everything is good. Entertainment has always been meant for kids first, adults second. (Even holy cows of our generation - like Robocop and Alien, had action figures and such.)

Almost all of this mass market stuff is just different configurations of sex and violence (what one would objectively call "pornography"). Arguing over which configurations are best is puerile and pointless. Comedy, the only mass market distraction product that isn't linked to these two things (though it very often is), is even more fragmented.

The art style homogeneity is very unfortunate though. Absolutely incredible stuff can be done with painted keyframes now and in the future, but it isn't gonna happen in a commercial venture anytime soon.

The trendline is increasingly toward a world where everyone basically has entertainment made just for them. The world where everyone is living in the same bucket watching the same shows are long dead - nothing will be as ubiquitous as The Fresh Prince or Star Wars was.

... but the world of animoo should really allow parents to exist sometimes.

Oh, c'mon, I didn't even give any decent definitions and you want sources for numbers? At 2 am? You surely are kidding!

...But for number of anime produced per cours, I think that they are relatively easy to find out (as in: a google search will give you some references, numbers may not be accurate if you go back to the '70s; I probably posted some books also reporting now old numbers on this topic, some time ago and in a post in this thread; etc.).

Re: old anime...Send me the questionnaire over and I will ace it. Or: sorry, but how can I prove that I watched e.g. The 60's tiger mask series, the first two Gundams and Matsumoto as a kid? My late grandma cannot confirm this, for obvious reasons (but she really loved Candy Candy and Shin Attack!).

All of these are not surprisingly difficult "tasks", as Italian TV stationss would re-run these and tons of other early '70s and '80s show millions of times. I mean, I am pretty sure that Xiga grew up watching "Nicky Larson" and "Albator" and "Kenshiro" on TV (among others), which seem (or seemed?) to be cult series in English-speaking countries.

Distribution of anime & manga across the world seemed very "uneven" up until the 90s or so. Cowboy Bebop is often credited as making anime popular (mainstream) in the US, and if this is actually true, it may be the case that a certain "fetish" for "lost" decades may be caused by lack of access to works from those decades. Nothing personal, but you guys seem to worship the past a lot also because you never watched old shit, and can cherry-pick the good shows at your leisure (eh!).

And then there is the fact that some works from said lost decades were gems (to put it in a simple way) that set up standards, as well as capturing the zeitgeist. This is something that happens when a work of art is created when a medium is still relatively new (anime emerged at the end of the '60s, as an established medium).

To cite GP's favourite example: Maison Ikkoku is generally considered a masterpiece by fans and people from the industry alike (the anime even more than the manga, from what I can recall). However, it also had the advantage of being the adult-themed work of a very skilled but risk-averse author, who decided for once to create one of the earliest "slice of life" works around, but following some of the standard tenets of the gekiga style (i.e. the "epic", "adult" style that aimed to cater to adults).

Any author who would try to create a better work in that mould would face at least three challenges. First, there are now hundreds if not thousands of copies of that model. Second, the zeitgeist has changed: Japanese society up until the '80s appeared ok; as it is now, reflected via manga, it looks like a shithole. This seems to be reflected in how characters are generally portrayed. Third, people who would pay money to watch such a series would probably be few and far in-between (because Otaku).

Or: being old enough and in the right place is sometimes enough to know stuff well. It also helps to grow up and do stuff when it is NEW, rather than old.

But re: numbers. My own (subjective, as I mentioned in the early post) view is that e.g. this cours the only good anime is Vinland Saga, which is an adaptation of a great manga that is now almost 20 years old. A database such as myanimelist reports around 300 series for this cours (including hentai). My next conjecture is that when e.g. Yamato (the original series), there were around 40-50 series that were really not up to scratch.

We can debate if my taste is on the right mark (worst waste of time ever...). However, if 100 people find only one series out of X to be good, even if each of them chooses a different series, the net perception is that the percentage of good works being put out is low (and if X increases over time, the perception is that it gets lower and lower).

...and the most important bit: si, lo so che si chiamano bocce, but I am more or less convinced that it wouold sell more as a french-themed work. That's nevertheless good news that you know, and if GP knows too, pair matches are set! (Xiga-Rando team vs. Drauch-GP team!).

Re: GP and Boss. It's not that I even disagree with you on anime/manga (on photography, it seems that GP would entirely agree with my father), but you guys repeat this grumpy "modern anime sucks" every 47.4 days, for 12.74 years. I cannot avoid lampooning this geriatric, reactionary streak, and nevertheless feeling good with my conscience

BrianM: yes, the customer-tailored entertainment model will soon be upon us, but it will involve endless variations of pointy chins, Gainax-like rotating tits, and tsunderes. A key factor in modern mass-produced entertainment is also controlling consumers' taste and make it converge to a few, well-defined variables. The lack of parents in the animu world is not too surprising, when those buying the Blu-Ray copies are Otaku with negative chances of becoming parents and having proper parents.

...And that's it for ranting, from me. See you on Monday at the park, and please wear your best petanque/bocce shoes.

France was absolutely flooded with jp tv anime, from the final 70's to the mid-90's channels bought them in bulk for kids shows, then some law passed and we've seen less on tv but the manga and dvd market took over (2nd after Japan, which explains all the weeb events here). Although most of this is in the past now, it went way beyond Nicky Larson/City Hunter, Albator/Harlock and Kenshiro (the former and latter remained famous for the hilarious purposedly fucked up dubs)

The picture reminds me...

Some friends of mine told me that the pub on the other side of the street from my home, back in Italy, started an "old skool anime night" on Fridays. Imagine a countryside pub in the middle of the mountains, with a good parking space but so close to the woods that the occasional fox can be found rummaging through the organic waste, at night.

The owners decided to run City Hunter, Cowboy Bebop and some other series from the late '80s/early '90s, to be sure that they would attract some decent crowds. The events were very successful, but one night a guy in his sixties yelled: "enough with this modern crap! Give us Harlock and (Ashita no) Joe, you bunch of youngsters!", while sipping a glass of Caffe' Sport Borghetti (an extremely vintage and yet still popular coffee-flavoured liquor).

The true punchline, however, is that my friends asked me whether it was me, in disguise, who yelled that (lies! Harlock is for the casuals!). Which is not entirely out of character, since I am a great fan of vintage liquors and obscure spirits

Yeah, human beings are mirrors of their environments. Conditioning is a trivial endeavor for one-way media. I'm sure we all know how much 80's kids got messed up by Jessica Rabbit, April O'Neil and the Looney Tunes. Eh, they'd have probably just imprinted on trees or something instead anyway.

It does seem like a lot of this stuff is fetish rotation (that includes violence and environmental themes - there's really nothing in modern history that compares to the absolute hegemony that Westerns in cinema had). The #1 grossing franchise a few years back, Monster Musume, is a great example of that.

I've talked often about the universality of expertise and burnout on markets before. How after you've mastered a genre you want increasingly elaborate and niche products that branch away from the root, basic vanilla version of a product. How Super Mario Brothers 3 isn't good enough for a veteran when it comes to difficulty or variety. Worth the Candle is a masterpiece to grognards, but a miserable depressing mess to some kid just getting into Dungeons and Dragons. It's often been said the 425 episodes of Teletubbies is "quite a bit overkill" for the small age range it services.

Viewing these consumers as though they were drug addicts looking for the next stronger hit isn't inaccurate, I don't think. Web serials are the best our species can do currently, to a genie that can provide these commercially nonviable distractions.

The language models aren't there yet.

Indeed... I've just yet to find something I dig. I do search a bit from time to time. I did watch all of Yamato 2199 which you praise. It just wasn't for me. Maybe something will grab me. However, as I have little time to devote to such things, I am easily kept busy w/ all the old stuff I missed, which is ample.

I usually skip long posts because these geriatric eyes of mine aren't what they used to be, but since you responded to my joke I gave it a read, so props there 8)

I do try, though. I tried Vinland a couple of years ago and couldn't do it. I posted here and I think I got chewed up by a few people, but man, I just can't do the main kid with the knives and the massive mop of hair. The art is appealing, which is usually my main grief, but if character design doesn't meet my grumpy criteria then I throw it to the wind, huzzah!

I'm basically the same way with American and Euro stuff as well; I can't stand the digital gloss of modern comics and I despise the typical superhero, so I usually skip everything. But like GP said, there's too much stuff for me in the backlog to really care, and as my Japanese increases that only fuels more sleazy raw stuff. So I get to sit in perpetual grandpa mode for life, and I think I'm fine with that. Just waiting for the next 47.4 days so I can chime in again!

Oh damn, drauch actually isn't that far from me at all lol. I drove farther than that recently just to pick up a Laserdisc lot.
