Illbleed...am I the only person who doesn’t get this game?

Post by awbacon »

I did a video on Illbleed for my “odd” game season, and even after playing it again in 2019 I still can never decide if it’s a genius game or a total mess of a game.

What’s the consensus on this one? I’d love to hear everyone else’s thoughts

I thought it sucked but this was 10+ years ago at this point.

Played it when it was released, thought it was sloppy.

I agree, but the game seems to be loved by a ton of people. Its got a huge amount of character but little in the way of solid gameplay

It's one of those games you play for the experience. The story/atmosphere/sense of humor is top notch. The combat is pretty bad but there are ways around it... but it is still really bad. The 'I Spy' gameplay is somewhat satisfying though you can be screwed if you don't have power for your horror goggles. It can a slight satisfaction to deduce what is actually a threat based on the contextual knowledge of your 5 senses meter. In a game that is entirely built around cheap, cheesy jump-scares, they in and of themselves can offer a good laugh.

If you haven't, I'd honestly recommend Blue Stinger. Some similar problems (especially since the American release borked the fixed-camera-angle controls with a wonky camera and 3D controls) but the humor, charm, and atmosphere of the game helps you push through it (and learning how effective melee is in the game vs. guns for many normal enemies). Makes me wonder if there is a fan hack that takes the great localization and puts it back into the original control scheme.

I've owned it since it came out and although I love the completely insane nature of the game, it's never something I've really been able to get into—just too much of a hodgepodge of bad ideas thrown together with good ones. I can always appreciate a bad good movie, but a bad good game is something different because I have to actually play it, and actually playing Illbleed generally doesn't generate a reward commensurate to the effort. I also feel the first level is really the strongest bit of the game. Still not a bad thing for what it is though.

It is not a good game, but it is quite unique. Nothing plays quite like it. The first stage is really really hard until you learn to adapt to the game's logic, but once you do, it gets quite easy and fast paced. The combat is awful, but it's still a very easy to win anyway, and I love the gore. Very few horror games try to do something truly different, and for that it will always have it's fans.

I couldn't find any enjoyment in it.
I'd have never purchased, rather it came among a console and broadband adapter lot I purchased.
Gave it a few play attempts, and it just wasn't something that offered me any enjoyment.
Frustratingly after I sold it for like $15 the price shot up from some sudden youtube cult-classic status.

Seems like everyone on here has the same opinion...entertainingly weird but gameplay is meh.

Its so funny the game is as beloved as it is by some Dreamcast fans. It's on so many top ten lists I get confused as to why!

The bad ending sure goes all in, in more ways than one.

You also have to give props to the final chapter, where Illbleed dispenses in any way with 'game' and replaces it with a linear corridor of cutscenes - just to tell you the heartbreaking story of Cork and his love Sexy Doll, and how Cork would do anything (including child murder!) to get sent to hell to find her. It's touching really.

Because internet.

But seriously that's why. It gets in one buzz bs top x Dreamcast games you've never played or similarly neurotic titled article, other articles parrot it and people parrot it without even having played the game.

It's also a very deranged, twisted game, and has a final level in which the protagonist wears next to nothing on the true ending route.

I wouldn't hold your breath for an HD remake, that's for sure.

Sounds about as likely as Rule of Rose. I never did get that far.

Illbleed is actually fun to play. Rule of Rose isn't really controversial at all, it's just the age of the characters and the twisted horror setting.

Illbleed's characters are all adults, but it still realllllly pushes the envelope.

My holy Sega Dreamcast trinity (that doesn't include arcade ports from Naomi etc.)

Maken X, D2, Illbleed

Then again, I was silent hill series fanatic (and proud of it) before I got interested in shmups, so I consider (mindscrew) survival horror fans and arcade players are nearly opposite sides of spectrum. Great to see some people love both, though.

D2 was wild af. I enjoyed it a lot more than Illbleed. Maken X is a big rofl, but I did beat it.

Having not seen any of his more vaunted later works, I will still vouch for his VGM skills - his Famicom rendition of Altered Beast's st2 BGM is some authentically KVLT stuff. Image Image In darkness / Thou art mine / Eternally ♫

That's a shame.. but it's definitely not for everyone.

I played it recently and I loved it so much that I had to go for the true ending after my first playthrough (which I did blind..). I think that it's the real treasure of the Dreamcast. Definitely my favorite one. I love the shmups on the console but Illbleed is so out there.. so yeah, to each their own.

Damn  that's some proper dark, arcane stuff. Very cool. an eerie and evil atmosphere well done. Makes me want to do terrible things to Asmik-kun (poor little guy... he always gets a raw deal)

You're out east right?

Sabres? (what is going on with that team lol)

Devils? (promising future tho. still can't believe the Taylor Hall trade... and now they have Hischier too)

Rags? (they lost quite some feathers in the last 2 years. especially McDonagh)

Flyers? (mix of aging vets with green guys(including Nolan Patrick) and seemingly no one in-between. Great upcoming goalie(finally...))

Don't tell me it's Ottawa...

I'm in Kansas bro Baton, BUT my family is all up in Michigan and I visit regularly. I'm a die hard Red Wings fan. I even have old Steve Y and Nick Lidstrom posters.

That is pretty sick. 2 great players, especially Lidstrom, that guy was a damn beast. Stevie Y great leader too. clutch and with a determination of steel

Bro you can't complain, you had a 25-year-run or so of your team making the playoffs  including a dynasty in the late '90s - early 2000s. (dat Wings-Avalanche rivalry tho...)

I saw a Wings game at Jos Louis arena actually, my brother lives in Windsor so it's a real easy trek

It seems they haven't replaced Zetterberg and Datsyuk...

Thanks! And yeah well I see you're from Québec.. french canadian stg fan is a rare breed hah. I used to be an avid hockey fan.. you see, I was a Nordiques fan (yup) and losing them cut me deep my friend. So deep, I just couldn't care about the sport after that. But I still carry the memories of "the good old days".
