I know it's hard to see the numbers in the video, but that first reflect from the upper right corner can get the stage started with 400+. Things to do:LordHypnos wrote:Are there any sort of specific parts of it that are more significant than others, might I ask?
1. not destroy the row of gun pods at the beginning or really anything but the small sniper tank on the right side (this part was cut from the video, but you can see its glowing wreckage).
2. move slowly to and stay safe in the upper right corner while waiting for the upper right spiral firing enemy to appear. Might seem insignificant, but I move slightly toward and then away from that enemy to direct aimed fire and avoid destroying it with the piercing cannon.
A lot of bullets will be concentrated in that direction if you've been in position long enough. Last thing to note is to not use the entire meter because there's another good place to do some bullet collecting soon after and the timing is really tight. It's as difficult as you want to make it after that, but just keeping the chain alive to the bridge is good. There are a lot of ways to play most areas of the game and the battle plan will naturally get more elaborate the more you play.
I want to. I was warming up nicely for a week or two and stopped for no particular reason. And now somehow playing games for the brainless like Planks and Ladders/The Last of Us.And what about that gold panning anyway? Are you ever gonna try to increase that top score of yours?

Re: Mars Matrix (new thread)
Well, I think I've just about bled my current route dry (although I guess that's probably not true considering it's Mars Matrix), although in that run I failed to chain all the way from the rotating turret in stage 2, and I could also learn to milk the stage 2 boss for experience, but I think my best bet for more gains would be learning Rob's stage 3 route and / or learning to chain through the midboss of stage 4. Definitely a goal for the future, but I'm not sure that I want to do it yet.Kollision wrote:That's awesome!LordHypnos wrote:y halo thar Kollision, looks like I've almost caught up with you...

That score looks really impressive, congrats!
Do you use the teapot trick (assuming it's still in the DC ver) I've seen in some arcade replays or is it all just pure chaining? It's pretty amazing that you can take the game this much further than the arcade counterstop.

Re: Mars Matrix (new thread)
So, for one thing scoring ends up being higher in the DC version by a lot (possibly by as much as 2 times the arcade version), my understanding is that this is because the enemies have higher point values. I doubt that this would be quite a counterstop if it were the arcade, but it's hard to tell. it's around the same experience as Moreno's red ship counterstop, but the red ship can take out many more enemies, especially (and critically) in stage 6. Lowest counterstop experience for the blue ship that is on record here is Third Strike (3.5 mill), but there's a big gap between his and the next lowest (CRI w/ 2.3 million).ciox wrote:That score looks really impressive, congrats!

Beyond that though, it's mostly chaining, but something which actually makes a surprising amount of difference (that I didn't used to do) is triggering bonus enemies in stage 4 in what I call the "field of death," which is the bullet hell part before you fight the battleship. There's also a lot of additional potential you can get from triggering bonus enemies in stage 5, but I've barely tapped into that. I generally just focus on chaining there.
I'm not familiar with the teapot trick. Is that the thing where you kill turrets at the beginning of stage 3 in order to get teapots to reflect bullets off of? If so, then I don't do it.
I don't know if you're interested, but in terms of chaining, I think I had around 350-380k by the end of stage 1, 600-630k by the end of stage 2, 1.6-1.8 million by end of stage 3, stage 4: 2.2-2.3 mill, stage 5: 3.2-3.3 mill IIRC.
I think I was at around 550-580 billion points by the end of stage 4, and 800-900 billion points by the start of stage 6, but I tend to watch experience much closer than points.

I'm aware of the scoring differences but I figured since it's so much higher than the counterstop it's still pretty damn good.LordHypnos wrote: So, for one thing scoring ends up being higher in the DC version by a lot (possibly by as much as 2 times the arcade version), my understanding is that this is because the enemies have higher point values. About the teapot trick, I'm talking about this particular way of doing it, the score gain is quite significant and I was pretty curious if it's enough to make a player want to always go for it or if it's better to forego the suicide it requires and just try to keep your chain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=731ZuP8iLnE#t=5m40s
Chain breakdowns sound epic, would love to see a replay sometime, I actually don't think I've seen much MM played on DC, at least not at a high level.

That's interesting. I didn't actually realize that was a scoring trick. I guess it does seem to bump the score up quite a bit. I wonder what's going on there, technically.ciox wrote:

If I had to guess, I'd say that at that point chaining should be prioritized over points, because the more you can get in stage 3, really the more you get total, due to the gold cube waterfall, and it seems to me that the enemies are higher value in stages 4, 5, and 6 (especially 6). That being said, though, my route for stage 3 is a little sub par, and I'm not chaining that section anyway. Actually, I think I might work on rerouting stage 3 next. It's also worth pointing out that in Rob's 3 trillion run, he does not use that strat, I'm pretty sure.
As for replays. It's something I want to do eventually, but I don't really have the tools at this time. I had used my camera for my 2.5 mill replay, but there's sand in the moving parts now, and it's not working I really ought to get a capture card, but there are some other issues that may present themselves there (unless I were to get a VGA capture card, but those are extremely expensive).

After improving my stage 3 route, I ended up with this. I feel like I could still improve it quite a bit. I had a few runs with better stage 3 chains that ended up with higher scores at the start of stage 6 in spite of worse chaining in stages 4 and 5. Really nice survival in this one, though. first death on stage 5 boss last form. At any rate, I'm not done yet.

So, this is not a bad score by any stretch. IIRC I did really well at chaining in stages 1-4 this run, then broke the chain mid 5 which is very frustrating, because I was at like 3.1 mill experience at the start of stage 5, and so that should really end me with around 3.9m at least, if not 4. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly though, because that would mean that I still had 700,000 exp in this stage, which would actually be pretty good for a chain break, but I guess it depends where the break is.
Anyway, I'm thinking that I may need to improve stage 3 or stage 5 in order to actually break 4 million exp. Hoping that that would get me over 2 trillion points, but I might be wrong (this is based on Randorama having gotten 2 trillion with like 3.9m, though he might be doing some other scoring techniques that I'm unaware of).
I think stage 5 would probably be easier to improve on here, as I am still using the same route as I always have for this, and that's likely inefficient. I'm not doing exactly Rob's stage 3 right now, but it looks like his gets way harder where we diverge. Besides, I can already get usually a +1900 to +2020ish chain in stage 3, so that's pretty damn good. The one advantage of improving 3 is that even a few more experience would lead to a lot more multiplier in that chain range, and earlier experience has more enemies to multiply itself by (though the lions share of high value enemies are still in stage 6, so the difference could be minimal).
My score attack experiences right now are:
st1 - 419,127
st2 - 271,483
st3 - 2,025,087
st4 - 527,585
st5 - 1,129,105
st6 (which should just be ignored) - 81,400
total - 4,453,787
Yet, I still can't break 4m

Finally pulled together a reasonable score for MM AC. I've been really pushing myself to focus on scoring over the clear on this one because a little birdy flew by my window one afternoon and cried out "are you gonna play tee-ball, or are you gonna play home run derby?" I've never been one to argue with birds. Despite it being one of the relatively easier portions of the late game (ignoring the final pattern), I seem to keep dying at the train boss and continually being disallowed from entering the sixth stage where all those wonderful untold billions of points like to hang out. Needless to say, i've been really enjoying the scoring in this game, but i'm still not satisfied with 165 billion when in practice I can land 200-300 billion without much more effort. I may or may not take a short break from this game and play something more relaxing like Giga Wing since MM is getting pretty nasty at this point, but I definitely would like 200+ Billion and a clear before the end of the year.

Re: Mars Matrix (new thread)
Another challenger appears!
Hey, if you can make it past the end of stage 4, you're past the biggest hurdle for most people. I will say that, IMO the train boss is actually the hardest single spot in the game, but I think the thing with stage 4 is that it's pretty hard to just brute force you're way through the end of it, and once you're beyond brute force, if you keep going at it you'll eventually get through with enough lives to brute force your way through the train boss
An additional note is that you can improve your score a lot, even without the stage 6 points, by learning to chain through the majority of stage 3. stages 4 and 5 also have a lot of points. However, you're quite right that to be competetive with people who have made it through most of stage 6, you really do need to make it through most of stage 6. On the other hand, I (and probably most other MM players) typically judge people mostly based on experience rather than points, because exp measures how good your chains are, and is also pretty much comparable between the AC and DC versions.
Just some thoughts and, hopefully, encouragement

Re: Mars Matrix (new thread)
Thanks for the encouraging words/advice from both of you!
I recently realized how much more exp gain I could be getting from stage 3 by carrying even a decent chain up to the waterfall, so I guess that's coming up next on the list, even though scoring in stage 3 is really intimidating for me at my level. I can still touch up stage 1, but since i'm already getting 325k-350k on average (and extremely rarely 400+) so I think I should focus my efforts more so on the other stages. Stage 4 and especially stage 2 seem really nasty to improve my routes in since that would require connecting areas to nearly full chain them (stage 2 full chain = ohgodplzno D:), so i'll probably just stick to working on consistency for those. I'm pretty sloppy on stage 4 in particular. So, this leaves stage 3 and 5 to be my main places to improve on exp gain.
And just because i'm curious, Hypnos, what sections of the train do you have the most trouble with besides the obvious last section? I also must add, your appearance on STG weekly is specifically what peaked my interest about the scoring in this game and is just a great resource in general, so kudos!

In response to your question: It's pretty much just the last section. I think there's some RNG, and the bullets are just too fast to react to (I think). I feel like most people find stage 4 boss, and maybe even stage 6 boss harder, but those are 100% static, albeit pretty high execution still.
As for your ideas for improving score, I think you're on the right track. Improving stage 5 and 3 will get you much higher experience than improving any of the other stages, and I'd say they're probably easier to chain than stage 4, and definitely easier to chain than stage 2. Some helpful videos for this endeavor are Rob's more recent chaining videos, though I'd say that the stage 3 route is actually quite a bit harder than my old stage 3 route (which I think you can see on my videos). I'll be back here later today with some links, but I don't have time to search for them now.
Also, it looks like Rob has abandoned this thread, so I'm going to go ahead and call dibs on it.
EDIT: shoot, Rob took the links down I do have the videos downloaded, but I'm not sure how to find them on youtube as they were unlisted. For now you just have all of the other vids. I guess those score attack ones were pretty advanced anyway.
I compiled all of the videos that I know of at one point (before doing the STGWeekly episode), and here they are:

Just soz you know, this thread is no longer actively maintained, you'll need to check out the newer thread. I will definitely add you to the table, there, though
EDIT: I will assume you are the same person as is called "aventus" in the current table (unless stated otherwise), and it looks like you're playing the Dreamcast Arcade version.
EDIT 2: Keep it up, you're almost at the 1cc!
